OBJECTIVE: This comparative cohort study evaluates the clinical efficacy of 3D-printed patient-specific cutting guides (PSCGs) versus conventional manual techniques in correcting rigid midfoot pes cavus deformities.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 40 patients (80 feet) undergoing Cole osteotomy between 2021 and 2023 was conducted. Patients were stratified into two matched cohorts: Group A (manual osteotomy, n = 20) and Group B (PSCG-assisted, n = 20). Radiographic parameters (Meary's angle, TMI, TCA, Djian-Annonier angle, Pitch angle) and functional outcomes (VAS, AOFAS, SF-36) were anal

OBJECTIVE: Midfoot osteotomy combined with Ilizarov methods of correction is a rarely reported treatment that is particularly well-suited for severe rigid pes cavus. The study aimed to assess the radiological and clinical results of patients who had been treated for rigid pes cavus using this method.
METHODS: The study retrospectively analyzed the clinical and radiological data of 15 pes cavus in 12 patients who were corrected by midfoot osteotomy with Ilizarov external frame in our department from March 2020 to September 2022. Radiologic outcomes were measured using the Meary angle (MA), tal

Peroneal tendon pathology is often an overlooked and underdiagnosed condition. It is often confused with chronic ankle instability. It is important when surgically managed to assess the condition of the tendons, muscle viability and strength, and associated cavovarus deformity. Complex reconstruction may be needed, including 2-stage procedures with a silicone rod and tendon transfer.

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a genetic lower motor neuron disease. It usually involves all of the skeletal muscles innervated by the anterior horn cells of the spinal cord. In rare cases, there is also localised involvement of the spinal cord. We report a 10-year-old boy who presented to the Sultan Qaboos University Hospital, Muscat, Oman, in 2015 with muscle weakness restricted to the lower limbs. The presence of a homozygous deletion within the survival of motor neuron 1 gene confirmed the diagnosis of SMA. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first report of an Omani patie

A review of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) performed to exclude the presence of spinal dysraphism in children presenting with lower limb pathology is unrewarding in the absence of abnormal neurology. Over a 5-year period, 29 children ages 2 weeks to 15 years with a mean age of 6 years presenting with lower limb abnormalities were referred for MRI of the spine to exclude an occult neurologic cause for the deformities. More than one limb abnormality, for example pes cavus and limb length discrepancy, was present in 93% of the children, and 11 children had severe or recurrent talipes equinovaru

Clubfoot, known as congenital talipes equinovarus, is one of the complex paediatric foot deformity with the incidence of 1 in every 1000 live births. It consists of four complex foot abnormalities such as forefoot adductus, midfoot cavus, and hindfoot varus and ankle equinus. There are a number of surgical techniques (soft tissue releases, arthrodesis) used to correct clubfoot. However currently the conservative management (manipulation, serial casting, and braces) of clubfoot is considered as the best choice and it is widely accepted among orthopaedists. Clubfoot treated with surgical techniq

BACKGROUND: Foot type, especially cavus foot, is associated with foot and ankle soccer injuries, such as ankle sprains, ankle instability, and foot and ankle lateral injuries. The aim of this study was to identify risk factors for foot and ankle injuries among soccer players.
METHODS: Male and female soccer players, from beginners to semiprofessionals, aged between 10 and 40 years were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. Players filled in questionnaires about their training and injury history. Clinical measurements included foot length, Foot Posture Index-6, and arch height flexibility. E

The presence of multiple foot types has been used to explain the variability of foot structure observed among healthy adults. These foot types were determined by specific static morphologic features and included rectus (well aligned hindfoot/forefoot), planus (low arched), and cavus (high arched) foot types. Unique biomechanical characteristics of these foot types have been identified but reported differences in segmental foot kinematics among them has been inconsistent due to differences in neutral referencing and evaluation of only select discrete variables. This study used the radiographica

The origin of fractures of the fifth metatarsus and Jones fracture is not clear. The goal of this study was to investigate the evidence of anatomical deformities such as metatarsus adductus, hindfoot varus, or pes cavus as risk factors for this pathology. A literature search of records related to the review question was performed screening PubMed/Medline, Embase and Cochrane library databases (last update: May 2020) according to PRISMA guidelines. A meta-analysis was performed using the mean difference of the assessed angles (in patients with the fractures vs controls) as outcome measure to su

Congenital talipes equinovarus (CTEV), or clubfoot, is the the most common encountered musculoskeletal defect encountered at birth. Most cases present as an isolated deformity, with up to half of them presenting with bilateral deformity. CTEV have also been reported to present as part of syndromic phenomena. Dr Igancio Ponseti proposed a serial casting programme to correct the foot's cavus, forefoot adduction, varus and equinus. Up to 90% of infants will require a tendo-achilles (TA) tenotomy for the persisting equinus deformity. TA tenotomy is deemed a relatively safe procedure, with the most

Congenital talipes equinovarus (CTEV) is a congenital disability characterized by leg deformities in the cavus, adducts, varus, and equinus. The etiology of CTEV is poorly understood, despite its incidence ranging from 0.76 to 3.49 cases per 1000 live births in Indonesia. CTEV involves the fixation of the foot in the adducts, varus, and equinus with concurrent soft tissue anomalies. Despite advances in treatment, disability often persists. Theoretical models have been proposed for neurological, vascular, connective tissue, bone, and muscular causes; however, the currently available data sugges

INTRODUCTION: The progression of neurologic cavovarus (NCV) and equinocavovarus (NECV) foot deformities during growth can eventually lead to non-reducible severe talonavicular (TN) and subtalar (ST) joint rotational malalignments. This study aimed to describe a technique to correct severe, resistant inversion deformity of the ST joint complex as the foundational procedure in comprehensive reconstruction of multi-segmental NCV and NECV deformities in pediatric patients and to analyze mid-term radiologic, functional, and satisfaction outcomes.
METHODS: This prospective study included children w

ObjectiveWe sought to assess whether the presence of an os peroneum is correlated with cavovarus foot alignment in patients without a neurologic explanation for their foot shape. We hypothesized that a large os peroneum would increase the power of the peroneus longus and lead to a forefoot-driven, hindfoot varus deformity.Materials and MethodsThis was a retrospective cohort study conducted at a single institution and reviewed patients with 3 weightbearing views of the foot on plain radiography. Patients were characterized into having either no os peroneum (235), a small os peroneum (18), or a

Chronic ankle instability (CAI) can develop in up to 40% of patients after a first-time ankle sprain. Advanced imaging and statistical shape modeling (SSM) provide the opportunity to evaluate if subtle differences in foot and ankle morphology, such as hindfoot alignment or cavus features, may contribute to structural predispositions for recurrent instability. In this study, a 14-bone SSM was created from weight-bearing CT data (n = 80) from patients with CAI (n = 23), cavus foot type (n = 29), and rectus (n = 28) foot type. Scans for the CAI group were from pre-operative imaging of patients un

BACKGROUND: Fixed cavovarus foot deformity is characterised by a plantar-flexed first ray, hindfoot varus, and abnormal plantar loading, often resulting in pain, instability, and gait dysfunction. The surgical correction we performed involved a deformity-driven approach to address the structural apex and associated components. Evidence linking this multilevel correction strategy to objective biomechanical improvement remains limited.
METHODS: This prospective case series evaluated outcomes following a uniform deformity-driven multilevel surgical correction protocol for fixed cavovarus deformi

Congenital talipes equinovarus (CTEV) is a condition of the lower limb in which there is fixed structural cavus, forefoot adductus, hindfoot varus and ankle equinus. In Caucasian populations the incidence is around 1.2 per 1,000 live births, with a male to female ratio of 2.25:1. The left and right feet are equally commonly affected, and 50% of cases are bilateral. It is important to differentiate CTEV from a non-structural or positional talipes which is fully correctable. This positional variant occurs about five times as commonly as CTEV. The latter condition does not require casting or surg

The stiff human foot enables an efficient push-off when walking or running, and was critical for the evolution of bipedalism1-6. The uniquely arched morphology of the human midfoot is thought to stiffen it5-9, whereas other primates have flat feet that bend severely in the midfoot7,10,11. However, the relationship between midfoot geometry and stiffness remains debated in foot biomechanics12,13, podiatry14,15 and palaeontology4-6. These debates centre on the medial longitudinal arch5,6 and have not considered whether stiffness is affected by the second, transverse tarsal arch of the human foot1

INTRODUCTION: Pes cavus often signals the presence of Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) in adult patients, although its prevalence in the general population makes it a finding of unclear significance.
METHODS: We undertook a pilot double cohort study to investigate the feasibility of comparing preselected bedside and radiographic foot measures in pes cavus patients with and without CMT.
RESULTS: A total of 16 CMT and 11 non-CMT patients were recruited. Although no findings consistently met statistical significance, recruitment was highly limiting.
CONCLUSIONS: Formalized foot measurement comparison

In the study of biomechanics of different foot types, temporal or spatial parameters derived from plantar pressure are often used. However, there is no comparative study of complexity and regularity of the center of pressure (CoP) during the stance phase among pes valgus, pes cavus, hallux valgus and normal foot. We aim to analyze whether CoP sample entropy characteristics differ among these four foot types. In our experiment participated 40 subjects with normal feet, 40 with pes cavus, 19 with pes valgus and 36 with hallux valgus. A Footscan® system was used to collect CoP data. We used sampl
