BACKGROUND: A number of studies have been conducted evaluating the risk of cutaneous malignant melanoma after exposure to sunlamps and/or sunbeds. The proportion of subjects in the individual studies who have reported exposure has, in general, been modest, and the resulting risk estimates for melanoma have been unstable with wide 95% confidence intervals (95% CI). The inconclusive results seen in individual studies have resulted in confusion as to the carcinogenicity of these devices.

In this study, the chromium recovery conditions in the form of soluble chromate from chrome shaving (chromium-containing solid waste) by oxidation with air, oxygen and Na2O2 were investigated and basic Cr(III) sulphate solution using in the tanning was prepared from the chromate obtained. It has been determined that the oxidation agent is the most effective parameter affecting the chromate formation. Melanocortin analogues, such as melanotan, are illegally used for artificial tanning. They have also been suggested as possible therapeutic agents in the treatment of erectile dysfunction. This case study presents a patient attending the accident and emergency department, in a tertiary urology centre, with acute priapism after abdominal subcutaneous injection of melanotan. Changing UV exposure in adolescents and young adults has the potential to prevent years of excess exposure and subsequent skin cancer. Initial expectations were that an individual or media campaign informational approach would change this behavior. It is being recognized that current efforts have failed. INTRODUCTION: In-office phototherapy is an effective treatment for many dermatologic conditions, however, many patients are unable to adhere to the rigorous travel and time commitments sometimes needed. INTRODUCTION: Adolescents increase their skin cancer risk through exposure to ultraviolet radiation, tanning, and poor use of sun-safety practices. Past studies documented that adolescent indoor tanning is associated with substance use. However, these did not examine e-cigarette use as many were conducted prior to their widespread popularity nor were most studies focused on areas with high environmental risk for skin cancer. BACKGROUND: Socially valorized, excessive indoor tanning can lead to dependence. This finding is based on the observations of many dermatologists, who report repeated failures in preventing their patients from visiting tanning cabins, despite the announcement of a diagnosis of malignant melanoma.

We report herein the case of a 42-year-old woman who presented to the Burns Unit with 81% of her body surface severely burned following sun bathing, after applying fig leaf tea as a tanning agent. The patient was hospitalized for 13 days in a Burns Intensive Care Unit, and was discharged for an ambulatory follow-up. The treatment of such burns does not differ from any conventional treatment for heat- induced second-degree burns. The physiopathology of the phytophotodermatitis induced by such homemade tanning solutions rich in psoralen is discussed in detail.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Skin cancer incidence is higher than that of any other human malignancy, and yet one of its root causes [ultraviolet (UV) radiation] is perhaps better understood than any other human carcinogen. PURPOSE: To report the case of a patient with keratoconus who developed a corneal perforation secondary to UV radiation from a tanning lamp. We believe this to be the first case of a corneal perforation secondary to UV radiation.
METHODS: The presentation and management of the patient and the pathophysiology of UV keratitis are discussed.
RESULTS: Our patient developed a full-thickness corneal perforation after 30 minutes of tanning lamp exposure without eye protection. The cornea was temporized with cyanoacrylate tissue adhesive until penetrating keratoplasty could be performed.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the relationship between the use of fake tanning lotions and repeated sunburn among South Australian adults, with a view to informing the Anti-Cancer Foundation of South Australia's (ACFSA) policy on fake tanning products.
