Estimated Mask Use and Temporal Relationship to COVID-19 Epidemiology of Black Lives Matter Protests in 12 Cities.

There is an increased risk of SARS-CoV-2 transmission during mass gatherings and a risk of asymptomatic infection. We aimed to estimate the use of masks during Black Lives Matter (BLM) protests and whether these protests increased the risk of COVID-19. Two reviewers screened 496 protest images for mask use, with high inter-rater reliability. Protest intensity, use of tear gas, government control measures, and testing rates were estimated in 12 cities. A correlation analysis was conducted to assess the potential effect of mask use and other measures, adjusting for testing rates, on COVID-19 epi

[The group intoxication by tear-gas].

The case of group intoxication of 52 pupils by tear CS gas (2-chlorobenzelidenemaloninitrile) at school is presented. The most often clinical signs observed at hospital admitted children, at 13-16 year old were detail described. The special attend was given for 4 cases, heavy clinical intoxication observed for young girls. The clinical symptoms, action of xenobiotics and clinical treatment compare with literature data, were discussed.

Medical problems and criteria regarding the use of tear gas by police.

Litigation against police agencies for the use and misuse of control agents and procedures has become an important issue for the forensic medical specialist and expert witness. As police technology improves, it becomes apparent that more information for forensic experts will be required in this area. One such area of concern is the use of tear gas by police. This paper addresses the basic types of gas in terms of their chemistry, uses, and medical side effects and complications. Two types of gases--namely, chloroacetophenone (CN) and orthochlorobenzylidenemalontrile (CS)--are discussed in term

Fatal Penetrating Head Injuries Caused by Projectile Tear Gas Canisters.

BACKGROUND: Since their advent in the 1920s, tear gas canisters (TGCs) have been frequently used in crowd control. Few reports have documented nonpenetrating injuries attributed directly to TGCs. In this study, we report a case series of fatal penetrating head injuries caused by TGCs. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective chart review of all the patients who were admitted to the Neurosurgery Teaching Hospital in Baghdad, Iraq, since the start of the antigovernment protests (October 2019). All patients who suffered penetrating head trauma caused by TGCs were included in our study. We collected

Ocular tear film bubble formation after breath-hold diving.

Bubbles in the ocular tear film have been observed following both dry-chamber, simulated compressed air dives and in-water, recreational compressed air dives. The current paper reports on the formation of tear film bubbles in a breath-hold diver following repeated, extended breath-hold excursions to a maximum depth of -28.5 m. It is believed that this is the first time that ocular tear film bubbles have been reported in breath-hold divers.

CS exposure--clinical effects and management.

The number of people exposed to CS spray presenting to accident and emergency departments is on the increase. Its effects, though usually minor and short lived, involve several systems and can occasionally be life threatening. It is therefore important that staff are able to manage these patients and know when and how to protect themselves and others from further contamination.

[Minimalizing surgery of retinal detachment].

The prerequisites for minimizing detachment surgery are (1) dispensing with drainage by using elastic plug materials limited to the area of the tear and (2) improved diagnostic methods for detecting retinal tears. Various procedures are being developed on this basis in which the extent of surgery is dictated by the size of the tear alone, and no longer by the extent of the detachment. These procedures include (1) the cryosurgical detachment operation for treating several tears with individual, permanent plugs and (2) the balloon operation for single-tear detachments, with a temporary plug; bot

Brief report: exposure to tear gas from a theft-deterrent device on a safe--Wisconsin, December 2003.

On December 4, 2003, a hazardous materials (HazMat) release occurred at a jewelry store in Beloit, Wisconsin, when the store owner tightened a screw on the door of an old safe outfitted with a chemical theft-deterrent device. The device included a metal housing containing a glass vial of liquid, which cracked as the screw tightened, releasing approximately 4 ounces of tear gas. The store owner sustained eye and skin irritation and was treated at a hospital and released. Twelve persons in the building and persons in adjacent businesses were evacuated for 3 hours while a certified Level A HazMat

Lethal head injury due to tear-gas cartridge gunshots.

We report a fatal head injury caused by a tear-gas cartridge and point out the underestimated potential injury of this type of weapon. Gas pressure wounds and the death mechanisms are also described. A review of the literature and forensic considerations of head injury without projectile are presented.
