Clinical characteristics, treatment patterns, and costs among hospitalised patients with cardiomyopathy: a multicentre retrospective tertiary-hospital study across China.

BACKGROUND: Characterising treatment patterns and costs is essential for understanding healthcare utilisation and informing cost management. We aimed to assess these aspects among hospitalised patients with cardiomyopathy. METHODS: We conducted a multicentre study at 11 tertiary hospitals across China, systematically extracting electronic medical records from 2017 to 2022. Factors associated with medical costs were analysed using generalised linear regression with cluster-robust standard errors. FINDINGS: Among 15,764 medical records of adult inpatients with cardiomyopathy, medical therapy a

Development of a Low-Cost Mechanical Hand Prosthesis with Varied Grasp Positions.

PURPOSE: The pricing of high-performance hand prostheses and grasp limitations of low-cost hand prostheses indicate a need for the creation of a cost-effective upper limb prosthesis with high-performance capabilities. The need is particularly relevant for pediatric recreational applications, as it is difficult to finance multiple high-performance devices to match the growth of a child. METHODS: We propose a low-cost upper limb prosthesis, the HelpingHand, to address these concerns through modification of the publicly available e-NABLE Phoenix Hand v2. Custom flexible finger modules and a user

Analysis of scientific and technological trends in the incorporation of activated carbon in advanced oxidation processes-a bibliometric study.

There is high interest in the development of water pollution remediation technologies. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are a promising alternative for the degradation of organic compounds; however, these technologies have been limited mainly by high operating costs and, in some cases, by forming byproducts, which can be more hazardous than the original pollutants. Activated carbon (AC) is a porous material that can be combined with AOP systems in various ways, given its adsorbent and catalytic characteristics. In addition, AC is a flexible, adaptable, and low-cost material. This article pr

Enhancing tuberculosis care in lower and middle-income countries through digital adherence technologies.

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major public health challenge, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), with treatment adherence being a critical issue. In recent years, digital adherence technologies (DATs) have emerged as a promising approach to enhance TB care and treatment adherence in these settings. Despite their potential to enhance treatment outcomes, their implementation faces challenges, including infrastructure demands, costs, and variability in effectiveness depending on the context. A critical aspect of DATs is their cost-effectiveness, which has shown mixed results a

Facial analysis technology for the detection of Down syndrome in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Down syndrome is one of the most common chromosomal anomalies affecting the world's population, with an estimated frequency of 1 in 700 live births. Despite its relatively high prevalence, diagnostic rates based on clinical features have remained under 70% for most of the developed world and even lower in countries with limited resources. While genetic and cytogenetic confirmation greatly increases the diagnostic rate, such resources are often non-existent in many low- and middle-income countries, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa. To address the needs of countries with limited resources, the

Cost-effectiveness considerations in transcatheter management of valvular heart disease.

In 2011, health care spending in Canada accounted for 11.2% of gross domestic product. Increased life expectancy, combined with the fact that new medical technologies generally tend to improve clinical results at an increased cost, are leading developed nations to devote rising amounts of financial resources to health care. Valvular heart disease is an example of an age-related health problem with rising prevalence that has recently seen an emergence of new catheter-based technologies, which are rapidly changing the treatment landscape. This article reviews the current literature on the health

Technology transfer of brain-computer interfaces as assistive technology: barriers and opportunities.

This paper provides an analysis of perspectives from different stakeholders on the state-of-the-art of BCI. Three barriers for technology transfer of BCIs as access technologies are identified. First, BCIs are developed with a narrow focus on creating a reliable technology, while a broader focus on creating a usable technology is needed. Second, the potential target group, which could benefit from BCIs as access technologies is expected to be very small. Development costs are therefore high, while reimbursements are expected to be low, which challenges the commercial viability. Third, potentia
