OBJECTIVES: Motorcycle helmet laws vary by state, with Kentucky requiring helmets only for younger riders. We hypothesized that motorcyclists injured in Kentucky and seen at a Tennessee trauma center would be more likely to be unhelmeted, have more severe head injuries, and sustain more fatal injuries than those injured in Tennessee or Virginia.

RATIONALE: From 1993 to 2010, annual U.S. tuberculosis (TB) rates declined by 58%. However, this decline has slowed and disproportionately occurred among U.S.-born (78%) versus foreign-born persons (47%). Addressing the high burden of latent TB infection (LTBI) must be prioritized.

Coyotes are exposed to many parasites and pathogens of veterinary and zoonotic concern. To assess the prevalence of the diseases caused by these microbes, we opportunistically obtained coyote samples from a variety of sources including a GPS collaring study, rabies testing facilities, wildlife resources agents, and road-side mortalities. All physicians evaluating a painful red eye in a contact lens wearer should consider the diagnosis of Acanthamoeba keratitis. Although it remains relatively rare, the incidence of this infection is on the rise. Clues to the correct diagnosis include a corneal abrasion that fails to heal appropriately, pain out of proportion to the clinical findings, and a history of poor contact lens hygiene. Prompt recognition and appropriate ophthalmologic intervention can improve the visual outcome for patients with this devastating corneal infection.
