The preoperative use of antithyroid drugs is mandatory if surgical treatment of complicated hyperthyroidism is contemplated. Six months to a year may be required for suitable preparation. Three experiments were conducted to evaluate the thyroid and adrenal response in groups of birds with altered heat tolerance. Groups of chickens that had been handled on each of 4 days and a nonhandled control group were bled on the 5th day with or without heating for 1 hr at 50 C. The nitration of tyrosine residues in bovine serum albumin (BSA) and cytochrome c was studied by Western blot analysis. The present study was undertaken to examine the response rate of thyrotoxicosis in patients with diffuse toxic goitre to thiouracil drug treatment for 1 year in an Irish population, reported to have a low iodine intake. Evidence exists that a low iodine intake is associated with a high long-term remission rate for drug treatment of diffuse toxic goitre.
