Endocrine neoplasms of the thymus and mediastinum are uncommon. This report describes such a carcinoma and the difficulty in determining its true nature. A simple modification of the technique for formaldehyde-fume-induced fluorescence (FIF) demonstrated biogenic amines in the cells. Electron microscopy and histochemical findings confirmed the close relationship of these neoplasms with neural-crest cells capable of amine precursor uptake and decarboxylation (APUD). The FIF technique is also a more sensitive method of detecting these tumors, since it has less of the sampling problems of electro

Tumours of non-endocrine origin may exert deleterious effects by elaborating active principles which disturb body regulation. Systemic manifestations are fairly common with neoplasms of the lung, kidney, gastro-intestinal tract and thymus. The secretion of these tumours may have a known chemical structure (serotonin), may present hormone-like action (parathormone, antidiuretic hormone, insulinoid), or have well-defined biological properties (erythropoietin, gastrin-like principle). Tumours may stimulate endocrine glands by an unknown mechanism, producing disorders such as Cushing's syndrome, h

Fifty-seven thymomas, defined as neoplasms of the epithelial-reticular framework cells of the thymus, were assessed in respect to histologic type, inclusive of there ultrastructural aspects. The median age of the 57 patients was 40.4 years, with a range of 2 1/2--72 years. All neoplasms were located in the anterior mediastinum. The tumours in 40 cases were encapsulated and without invasion of adjacent tissue or implants (equal to non-invasive thymomas). The tumors in 17 cases were invasive of adjacent tissue, particularly mediastinal pleura, pericard and trachea. Six of 57 patients (equal to 1

INTRODUCTION: Neuroendocrine neoplasms represent a rare and poorly understood collection of malignancies. A better understanding of their biology is needed to improve treatment options. Male predominance to the incidence of neuroendocrine neoplasms of the thymus suggests a biological basis for this observation.
METHODS: This single-institution, retrospective cohort study evaluated androgen receptor (AR) expression and other clinicopathologic features in thymic neuroendocrine neoplasms compared with thymic epithelial tumors and neuroendocrine neoplasms of other sites. Expression of neuroendocr

We studied 28 cases of anterior mediastinal liposarcoma occurring in 16 males and 12 females with a mean age of 43 years (range, 14-72). Presenting symptoms included dyspnea (four cases) and chest pain (four cases), although 11 tumors were detected incidentally by routine chest radiography. Seven cases were believed to be located within the thymus. Most (i.e., 25) of the cases were of low grade, with the well-differentiated lipoma-like or sclerosing subtypes constituting 60% and the myxoid subtype constituting 28%; the remaining 12% exhibited mixed features. Three cases were pleomorphic type.

Extraskeletal osteosarcoma (ESOS) is a malignant soft tissue neoplasm producing osteoid, without any continuity with the bone or periosteum. Primary ESOS presenting in the mediastinum is an extremely rare, yet aggressive malignant tumor associated with a poor prognosis. We report a case of primary ESOS arising from the thymus in a 63-year-old male patient.

Thymomas are epithelial neoplasm of thymus and most common primary neoplasm of anterior and superior mediastinum affecting males and females equally. It occurs usually in the fifth to seventh decade. Approximately one-third of thymomas are invasive. Metastases to distant extrathoracic sites such as the liver, lung, lymph node, kidneys, ovary and brain occur infrequently. This is more common with invasive thymomas. Although brain has been shown to be a site of infrequent metastases, intraorbital metastases has not yet been reported. Here we report one such case of invasive thymoma of anterior s

Thymomas constitute majority of the thymic neoplasms. In contrast, neuroendocrine tumors (carcinoid and neuroendocrine carcinoma) of thymus are extremely rare. Thymic carcinoids may present rarely with Cushing's syndrome due to the ectopic production of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH). Recognition of this association is imperative for appropriate management of patients. We describe three cases of rare atypical carcinoid tumor (neuroendocrine carcinoma) of the thymus. Case 1, of a 26-year-old man presenting with Cushing's syndrome, case 2--a 23-year-old female with Cushingoid features, and C

BACKGROUND: Neuroendocrine tumors of the thymus are rare, histologically diverse neoplasms with an unpredictable clinical behavior. This study provides a useful clinicopathological classification and determines the relevance of specific prognostic factors.
METHODS: Ten neuroendocrine tumors of the thymus were analyzed for specific clinical and pathological features. Prognostic factors of these cases and 71 previously published cases were evaluated by Kaplan-Meier survival curves and Cox multivariate hazard model.
RESULTS: There were 7 males and 3 females, with ages ranging from 26 to 77 year

Myasthenia gravis (MG) is an autoimmune neuromuscular junction disease. An association between thymic epithelial neoplasms and MG is well known. However, it is rarely associated with hematologic malignancies. In particular, very few cases of lymphoblastic lymphoma involving the thymus and MG have been reported. Here we report a case T-cell lymphoblastic lymphoma involving the thymus who developed MG after the initial diagnosis. The patient initially presented with a mediastinal mass which was diagnosed as lymphoblastic lymphoma. MG was diagnosed during leukemic relapse in this patient and was

Spindle epithelial tumor with thymus-like elements (SETTLE) presents as a neck swelling in children and adolescents. It is a rare malignant neoplasm derived from ectopic thymus or branchial pouch derivatives. It has a propensity for late hematogenous metastasis. Morphologically, it is a biphasic tumor composed of fascicles of spindle cells and epithelial components in the tubulo-papillary pattern. Due to its rarity, pathologists often misdiagnose it. Synovial sarcoma is its main morphologic mimic, but SETTLE lacks t(X;18) translocation. Surgery is the mainstay of treatment. Radiotherapy can be

Hematopoiesis is an enormous and complex process. When the primary site of hematopoiesis fails to meet the requirements of the body in conditions like hemoglobinopathies or myelofibrosis, various extramedullary sites take on the role of blood formation. Extramedullary hematopoiesis most commonly occurs in the liver, spleen, and lymph nodes and is rarely found in the thymus, heart, breast, adrenal glands, paravertebral regions, intraspinal tissue, and brain. Extramedullary hematopoiesis can mimic neoplasms in which symptoms are caused by the mass effect of the lesion. We report a rare case of a

The aim of the work was a comparative analysis of scientific sources, covering current surgical approaches in the treatment of thymus tumors, as well as the analysis of the results of own experience in minimally invasive surgery for thymus neoplasm. Thymic hyperplasia include tumor-like disorders, cysts and thymic tumors, the latter compose for 60-90% of all thymic lesions. Over the past ten years, due to the development of technologies, a new trends of surgical treatment of thymic tumors has been proposed - minimally invasive techniques, which all over the world changes the historical dogmas

Mesenchymal neoplasms of the thymus and mediastinum account for only 2 % of neoplasms of the mediastinum and are therefore very rare. With very few exceptions the histology, immunohistochemistry and (based on current knowledge) molecular biology of mediastinal soft tissue tumors are not different from their counterparts in other organs. Characteristic features are more concerned with clinical epidemiological and therapeutic aspects as well as the multitude of possible differential diagnoses. With the exception of organ-specific tumors, such as gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST), virtually

The authors report a case of a 6-year-old boy in whom aberrant thymic tissue was misdiagnosed as an intrathyroidal solid lesion. The patient underwent hemithyroidectomy and did well. Because cervical ectopic thymus rarely produces symptoms, the true incidence in children is unclear. Surgeons need to consider this rare entity, not to mistake it as a thyroid neoplasm, and not to perform extensive thyroid resection.

We point out the issue of differential diagnosis regarding the finding of ectopically localised thymic tissue (a thymic cyst) in the neck. Thymic tissue can be found anywhere along its developmental tract of descent, from the angle of the mandible to the upper mediastinum. Disruption of the thymic descent can result in ectopically/abnormally localised islets of accessory thymic tissue, which may undergo cystic changes, as described in a case report by Sun et al. This anatomical variation of the thymus may be clinically misinterpreted as a neoplasm or other congenital anomalies as a branchial c

Lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma (LELC) is an uncommon variant of squamous cell carcinoma, which is histologically identical to lymphoepithelial carcinoma of the nasopharynx. LELCs have been reported at a variety of sites, including the stomach, salivary gland, thymus, cervix, endometrium, breast, skin, bladder, and lung. We report 2 LELCs of the vagina and 1 of the anal canal, the first report of LELC at the latter site. All 3 neoplasms were diffusely positive with p16 (block-type immunoreactivity) and the anal canal lesion contained high-risk human papillomavirus type 16; the 2 vaginal neopl

Spindle cell lesions of the thyroid gland (T-SCL) are not encountered routinely in clinical practice or in the context of thyroid pathology. They commonly are classified as primary or secondary to metastatic disease. Primary T-SCL can be derivedfromfollicular, C-cell (parafollicular), or mesenchymal components and may be the result of reactive or neoplastic processes, including post-fine-needle aspiration spindle cell nodules, Riedel thyroiditis, solitary fibrous tumor, leiomyoma, peripheral nerve sheath tumor, hyalinizing trabecular tumor, spindle epithelial tumor with thymus-like differentia
