Sonographic presentation in autoimmune thyroiditis.

We used real-time ultrasonography to examine 60 patients with autoimmune thyroiditis, then correlated the ultrasonic pictures with thyroid function, thyroid autoantibodies and fine needle aspiration cytology. In these 60 patients, 45 (75%) showed diffuse goiter, 6 (10%) showed multinodular goiter, and 9 (15%) had a solitary thyroid nodule sonographically. One of the 9 patients with a solitary nodule was a case of autoimmune thyroiditis combined with papillary carcinoma. The echogenicity of the thyroid was more than, the same as, or less than that of the adjacent muscles in 17, 22, and 21 patie

Autoimmune thyroiditis and panic disorder.

Contrary to reports on depression, the prevalence of antithyroid antibodies was not significantly higher in 38 patients with panic disorder than in 38 matched control subjects. Autoimmune thyroiditis is not commonly associated with panic disorder but may play a role in some specific clinical circumstances.

[Diagnostic problems of autoimmune thyroiditis].

The most informative diagnostic criteria of autoimmune thyroiditis were revealed. A kit of diagnostic tests were offered for each version of autoimmune thyroiditis. The lowest percentage of antibodies against thyroglobulin was demonstrated for the hyperthyroid hypertrophic version of autoimmune thyroiditis, while the highest for its atrophic pattern. Biopsy of the thyroid was found to be the most informative test for autoimmune thyroiditis, provided the result was positive. If the result of puncture biopsy is negative, it is desirable to apply a complex of tests depending on thyroid function a

Autoimmune lymphocytic thyroiditis in dogs.

Primary diseases of the thyroid gland, especially lymphocytic thyroiditis and idiopathic follicular atrophy, were the most common lesions associated with clinical hypothyroidism in pet dogs. Lymphocytic thyroiditis resembled naturally occurring lymphocytic thyroiditis in the Obese-strain of White Leghorn chickens and Hashimoto's thyroiditis in man. The morphology of the thyroid lesion and frequent occurrence of circulating thyroglobulin autoantibodies suggested that lymphocytic thyroiditis was immune-mediated in pet dogs. Thyroid lesions similar to naturally occurring autoimmune thyroiditis in

Natural history of autoimmune thyroiditis.

One hundred and sixty-three asymptomatic people with thyroid antibodies or raised serum thyrotrophin (TSH) concentrations, or both, and 209 age-matched and sex-matched controls without either marker of thyroid disorder were followed up for four years to determine the natural history of autoimmune thyroiditis. Mildly raised TSH concentrations alone and the presence of thyroid antibodies alone did not significantly increase the risk of developing overt hypothyroidism during the four years compared with the controls. Overt hypothyroidism developed at the rate of 5% a year in women who initially h

Chronic autoimmune thyroiditis (Hashimoto's thyroiditis) in patients with MALT lymphoma.

BACKGROUND: Autoimmune diseases have been implicated in the genesis of MALT lymphoma of various localizations. The development of thyroidal MALT lymphoma has been described as an adverse event in patients suffering from long-standing chronic autoimmune thyroiditis (CAT, Hashimoto's thyroiditis). The percentage and possible association between CAT and extrathyroidal MALT lymphoma, however, have not been assessed so far. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 80 patients with MALT lymphoma diagnosed and treated at our institution identified a total of 13 patients (16%) with MALT lymp

HTLV-I infection in patients with autoimmune thyroiditis (Hashimoto's thyroiditis).

To investigate the possible relationship of HTLV-I virus infection to autoimmune thyroid disease, we examined, firstly, the frequency of HTLV-I seropositivity among patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis and, secondly, the frequency of Hashimoto's thyroiditis in patients with HTLV-I associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP). Of 144 patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis in the Tokushima and Kochi Prefectures, Japan, 9 (6.3%) were positive for serum HTLV-I virus antibody 2 of whom were confirmed histologically to have Hashimoto's thyroiditis. This percentage is significantly hi

Prevalence of autoimmune thyroiditis among children with autoimmune hepatitis.

BACKGROUND: Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) is an organ specific autoimmune disease, which can manifest at any age of life. there is a high prevalence of extrahepatic autoimmune diseases in patients with AIH. Autoimmune thyroid diseases (ATDs) are the most frequent extrahepatic autoimmune disorders among patients with AIH. Aim of work is to detect the frequency of ATDs among Egyptian children with AIH. METHODS: This research is a cross-sectional study conducted on 58 children with AIH aged ≤ 18 years. All patients were tested for free triiodothyronine (FT3), free tetraiodothyronine (FT4), thyroid
