Increased Patient Safety-Related Incidents Following the Transition into Daylight Savings Time.

BACKGROUND: "Spring forward," the start of daylight savings time (DST), reduces sleep opportunity by an hour. Insufficient sleep in healthcare workers resulting from the spring forward time change could potentially result in an increase in medical errors. OBJECTIVE: We examined the change in reported patient safety-related incidents (SRIs), in the week following the transition into and out of DST over a period of 8 years. DESIGN: Observational study SETTING: A US-based large healthcare organization with sites across multiple states MEASUREMENTS: Voluntarily reported SRIs that occurred 7 days

Insights Into the Assessment of WHO-Recommended Practices Based on Surgical Operations in Tertiary Healthcare Settings.

BACKGROUND: The protection of surgical safety comprises two major elements that produce the best outcomes for patients. The World Health Organization (WHO) created a surgical practice-based assessment for operative procedure-related risks. Medical professionals have proven the effectiveness of this checklist to eliminate both adverse outcomes and medical complications caused by surgical negligence. METHODOLOGY: A study was conducted on 250 surgeries (major and minor) in a tertiary healthcare setting based on a qualitative questionnaire, adapted from the WHO checklist, operated through Google

Evaluation of 15-second alcohol-based hand rub efficacy: a multi-laboratory study using a modified EN 1500 protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Hands are a key vector for pathogen transmission in healthcare, making effective hand antisepsis crucial for infection prevention. According to the European standard EN 1500, the reference method for evaluating hand antiseptics, a minimum rub-in time of 30 s is required. However, observations show healthcare workers typically spend less time on hand antisepsis. METHOD: To assess the feasibility of a reduced rub-in time under standardized conditions, the German Association for Applied Hygiene conducted a multi-centre ring trial in 14 laboratories using a modified EN 1500 protocol

Mapping patient pathways and estimating resource use for point of care versus standard testing and treatment of chlamydia and gonorrhoea in genitourinary medicine clinics in the UK.

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to explore patient pathways using a chlamydia/gonorrhoea point-of-care (POC) nucleic acid amplification test (NAAT), and estimate and compare the costs of the proposed POC pathways with the current pathways using standard laboratory-based NAAT testing. DESIGN/PARTICIPANTS: Workshops were conducted with healthcare professionals at four sexual health clinics representing diverse models of care in the UK. They mapped out current pathways that used chlamydia/gonorrhoea tests, and constructed new pathways using a POC NAAT. Healthcare professionals' time was assessed in each pa

Assessment of stored red blood cells through lab-on-a-chip technologies for precision transfusion medicine.

Transfusion of red blood cells (RBCs) is one of the most valuable and widespread treatments in modern medicine. Lifesaving RBC transfusions are facilitated by the cold storage of RBC units in blood banks worldwide. Currently, RBC storage and subsequent transfusion practices are performed using simplistic workflows. More specifically, most blood banks follow the "first-in-first-out" principle to avoid wastage, whereas most healthcare providers prefer the "last-in-first-out" approach simply favoring chronologically younger RBCs. Neither approach addresses recent advances through -omics showing t

Structural Issues Associated with Pre-exposure Prophylaxis Use in Men Who Have Sex with Men.

BACKGROUND: Limited access to healthcare has been associated with limited uptake of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for HIV among men who have sex with men (MSM). This descriptive analysis examined, in a near universal healthcare setting, differences between MSM reporting using versus not using PrEP in the past 12 months. METHOD: Data come from the 2017 Boston sample of the National HIV Behavioral Surveillance (NHBS) system, containing a venue-based and time-spaced sample of 530 MSM. The analysis used descriptive frequencies and tests of bivariate associations by PrEP use using Fisher's exact

An Experimental Protocol for Explainable AI-Driven Secure Cloud Data Migration Using Synthetic Healthcare Data.

In healthcare systems, more and more cloud data migration is being done, but this also changes the times when data transfer is probably the biggest risk in terms of security. This paper describes a reproducible protocol for explainable artificial intelligence (XAI)-based secure cloud data migration using a synthetic healthcare dataset and a controlled cloud environment. The developed framework merges zero-trust architecture, temporal least privilege, encrypted communication, centralized monitoring, and explainable anomaly detection to have a more secure, transparent, and auditable migration. Access to healthcare for children with CHDs in middle and low-income countries: a systematic literature review.

CHD includes a wide range of cardiac disorders present at birth. If appropriate care is delivered in time, the prognosis is relatively good. However, in many parts of the world, access to healthcare continues to be a problem for these patients, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. The aim of this study was to synthesise and analyse the available evidence to provide a deeper understanding of this problem. The literature search identified 1578 articles, and the final selection included 57 articles. Using the patient-centred healthcare access framework for identifying facilitators an
