A 3-month randomized trial evaluating the effects of stannous fluoride bioavailability on gingivitis.

PURPOSE: To assess the impact of formulation chemistry on gingivitis effects of two experimental 0.454% stannous fluoride (SnF2) dentifrices with low tin bioavailability versus positive and negative controls. METHODS: Adults with gingivitis were enrolled in this double-blind, parallel group, randomized clinical trial. Gingivitis was assessed with the Löe-Silness Gingivitis Index (LSGI) at baseline, 1 month, and 3 months. The four treatments were: experimental dentifrice A (0.454% SnF2, pH 4.7, soluble tin = 592 ppm), experimental dentifrice B (0.454% SnF2, pH 5.8, soluble tin = 102 ppm), posi

Influence of pure fluorides and stannous ions on the initial bacterial colonization in situ.

The present clinical-experimental study aims to examine the effect of pure experimental fluoride solutions and stannous chloride on the initial oral bioadhesion under in situ conditions. After 1 min of pellicle formation on bovine enamel slabs, 12 subjects rinsed with 8 ml of the fluoride test solutions (NaF, Na2PO3F, AmF, SnF2,) with 500 ppm fluoride concentration each for 1 min. Additionally, rinsing without a solution (control) and rinsing with 1563 ppm SnCl2 solution took place for 1 min. Afterwards, fluorescence microscopy took place to visualize bacterial adhesion and glucan formation (8

Hypervalent neutral O-donor ligand complexes of silicon tetrafluoride, comparisons with other group 14 tetrafluorides and a search for soft donor ligand complexes.

The hypervalent adducts of SiF(4), trans-[SiF(4)(R(3)PO)(2)] (R = Me, Et or Ph), cis-[SiF(4){R(2)P(O)CH(2)P(O)R(2)}] (R = Me or Ph), cis-[SiF(4)(pyNO)(2)] and trans-[SiF(4)(DMSO)(2)] have been prepared from SiF(4) and the ligands in anhydrous CH(2)Cl(2), and characterised by microanalysis, IR and VT multinuclear ((1)H, (19)F, (31)P) NMR spectroscopy. The NMR studies show extensive dissociation at ambient temperatures in non-coordinating solvents, but mixtures of cis and trans isomers of the monodentate ligand complexes were identified at low temperatures. Crystal structures are reported for tr

Alternatives to fluoride in the prevention and treatment of dental erosion.

In recent years, different agents have been discussed as potential alternatives to fluoride in the prevention of dental erosion. These agents are intended to form acid-resistant layers on the surface, to induce repair of eroded lesions by mineral precipitation or to prevent the enzymatic degradation of demineralised collagen. The application of adhesives and/or fissure sealants is considered to be an effective alternative to fluoride, but requires professional application and, depending on the product used, a re-sealing of the surface every several months. Studies testing film-forming products

In-vitro evaluation of the anti-cariogenic effect of a hybrid coating associated with encapsulated sodium fluoride and stannous chloride in nanoclays on enamel.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to test, in vitro, the anti-cariogenic effect of experimental hybrid coatings, with nano clays of halloysite or bentonite, loaded with sodium fluoride or with a combination of sodium fluoride and stannous chloride, respectively. METHODOLOGY: The varnish Fluor Protector (1,000 ppm of F-) was used as positive control and no treatment was the negative control. Enamel specimens (5 mm × 5 mm) were obtained from bovine teeth. The specimens (n=10) had their surfaces divided into two halves (5 mm × 2.5 mm each), in which one half received one of the treatments (Hyb

Room-temperature Stille cross-couplings of alkenyltin reagents and functionalized alkyl bromides that possess beta hydrogens.

This communication describes a significant expansion in the scope of Stille reactions of Csp3-X electrophiles, specifically, that Pd/P(t-Bu)2Me catalyzes the room-temperature cross-coupling of a variety of functionalized, beta-hydrogen-containing alkyl bromides with an array of alkenyltin reagents. The structure of the phosphine (P(t-Bu)2Me) is well suited for facilitating oxidative addition and avoiding beta-hydride elimination, while the fluoride serves to activate the tin reagent for efficient transmetalation.

Retention of KOH-soluble fluoride formed after application of a SnCl(2)/AmF/NaF containing mouth rinse under erosive conditions.

OBJECTIVE: Application of SnCl(2)/AmF/NaF containing mouth rinse showed good protection against erosion. The aim of the study was to evaluate if this is due to the amount of KOH-soluble fluoride (KOHsF) formed or its resistance under erosive conditions. METHODS: One hundred and fifty bovine enamel samples were allocated to five groups (n = 30) and were once eroded in 0.05 mol/l citric acid (5 min). Samples were stored in artificial saliva for 4 days. Samples of two groups (erosive-SnCl(2) + erosive-NaF) were eroded 6 × for 5 min. The remaining samples were stored in aqua dest deionised water.

Antibacterial effects of charcoal and fluoride dentifrices in oral biofilms.

OBJECTIVES: Charcoal-containing dentifrices are increasingly popular for their whitening claims, but data on antimicrobial effects are limited. This study compared the antibacterial efficacy of charcoal dentifrices versus non-charcoal dentifrices containing sodium fluoride (NaF), stannous fluoride (SnF₂), or sodium monofluorophosphate (NaMFP) against multi-species oral biofilms. METHODS: Biofilms of Streptococcus mutans, S. gordonii, and S. sanguinis were grown on hydroxyapatite discs and treated for 60 s with 6 dentifrice slurries (3 charcoal, 3 non-charcoal dentifrices) or controls (saline

Facile fabrication of hierarchical SnO(2) microspheres film on transparent FTO glass.

Hierarchical SnO(2) microspheres consisting of nanosheets on the fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) glass substrates are successfully prepared via a facile hydrothermal synthesis process. The as-prepared novel microsphere films were characterized in detail by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. Moreover, SnO(2) nanoparticles with 30-80 nm in size covered on the surface of nanosheets/microspheres were also obtained by optimizing the hydrothermal reaction temperature, time, or

Prevention and Treatment of Dental Erosion: Beyond Fluorides.

Different agents have been discussed as potential alternatives to fluoride in the prevention and treatment of erosive tooth wear (ETW). These agents may act by (1) forming an acid-protective layer on the tooth surface, such as through the use of sealants, polymers or the modification of the acquired pellicle; (2) enhancing mechanisms of (mineral) precipitation; and/or (3) preserving the organic matrix of dentine. The application of adhesives, sealants or flowables is considered to be an effective alternative to fluoride, but requires a re-sealing of the surface every several months depending o
