Dental Pathology of the Iberian Lynx ( Lynx pardinus), Part I: Congenital, Developmental, and Traumatic Abnormalities.

The Iberian lynx is an endangered felid that has been subject to an intensive ongoing conservation program in an attempt to save it from extinction. Identification of dental pathologies could play an important role in the survival of this endangered species. The objective of this study is to evaluate the dental pathologies (congenital, developmental, and traumatic abnormalities) of this species of felid. Skulls of 88 adult specimens of the Iberian lynx ( Lynx pardinus) from the Doñana Biological Station [Estación Biológica de Doñana-Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas] (EBD-CSIC),

Tooth dislocation: the relationship with tooth wear and dental abscesses.

Tooth dislocation (tilting) was recorded in 1,200 skulls from 34 museum collections. The findings of dislocation by tooth type, tooth wear, and abscess location are presented. A model for dislocation based upon the progressive loss of tooth support provides a rational explanation for the phenomenon. Physiological continuous tooth eruption was considered to account for a component of the progressive loss of tooth attachment. The process of attrition, pulp perforation, and dental abscess cavity formation resulted in further, more severe loss of tooth support. Heavy functional forces, in associat

Overdentures for acquired and congenital anomalies: 1. Complete dentures.

Overdenture principles can be applied to dentitions that are relatively complete without preparation or alteration of the existing teeth. Such overdentures may cover the traditional denture-bearing tissues as well as the unaltered remaining teeth. The primary advantages derived are reversibility, simplicity, and cost effectiveness. The primary indications are restoration of congenital and acquired anomalies. A detailed clinical and laboratory technique for fabricating these overdentures is presented. Effective restorations require care and attention to detail using the principles of convention

Descriptions of incisors of known-age Cape mountain zebras, Equus zebra zebra, from the Mountain Zebra National Park.

Twelve sets of incisors of Cape mountain zebras, 9 of which were from known-age individuals ranging in age from 11 months to 19 years, from the Mountain Zebra National Park, are described and depicted to illustrate not only the eruption and replacement sequence, but also the changes with increasing age in the configuration of the occlusal surfaces and of the infudibulum. Infundibula persist in maxillary incisors longer than in mandibular incisors. Shallow infundibula were still present in the maxillary incisors of a 19-year-old mare at least 4 years later than in plains zebras, E. burchelli, f

Age estimation in baboons (Papio cynocephalus) using dental characteristics.

Criteria for estimating the age of baboons using dental characteristics have been developed and tested. These criteria used eruption, wear, and color of the premolars and molars to characterize the ages of baboons in the range of 4--11 years of age. Ages greater than 11 were grouped into a single category. Using the criteria, three judges estimated independently the ages of 49 baboons, of known and unknown ages and of both sexes, with good agreement and precision. The rank order of the estimated ages was similar to the rank order of true ages for colony born animals.

Helicoidal plane of dental occlusion.

A helicoidal plane of postcanine occlusion has been patchily reported in many recent and fossil dentitions of man, and has been suggested as a taxonomic marker distinguishing between the dentitions of Homo and Australopithecines. The present paper describes the helicoidal plane in 19 out of 23 modern human (probably Indian) worn dentitions, in both gracile and robust Australopithecines and in extant anthropoids. It is suggested that tooth wear converts the plane of occlusion present in little-worn teeth, the Monson curve, into a helicoidal plane when 1) the diet is more abrasive, 2) the enamel

A silica toothpaste containing blue covarine: a new technological breakthrough in whitening.

There continues to be a demand from consumers and patients for products that whiten teeth. These products are generally either peroxide-based bleaching formats to improve intrinsic tooth colour or whitening toothpastes with enhanced physical and chemical cleaning properties to remove and prevent extrinsic tooth stain. Through the understanding of colour science and its application to tooth colour a new approach to tooth whitening is now possible from toothpaste. This is achieved by the deposition of blue covarine onto the tooth surface where it changes the optical properties of the teeth such

[Three dimensional finite element analysis of the influence of stress on occlusal surface of the mandibular first molar].

PURPOSE: Use of three-dimensional finite element to analyze stress distribution and transient displacement of mandibular first molar both at the occlusal surface level, to investigate the biomechanical basis of vertical root fracture occurring in the mesial root. METHODS: Mimics finite element software was used to build the horizontal and tilt abrasion of the mandibular first permanent molar. Each status was then divided into 4 kinds of wearing degree and 8 models were then established including sliced 1, sliced 2, sliced 3, sliced 4 and miter 5°,miter10°,miter15°,miter20° respectively. 200 N

Characteristics of tin-containing fluoride toothpastes related to erosive tooth wear protection.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the effect of different tin-containing toothpastes on the control of erosive tooth wear in enamel and dentin. METHODS: Enamel and dentin slabs were randomly distributed into 7 experimental groups (n = 10/substrate): C-: negative control (Artificial saliva); AmF (regular fluoridated toothpaste without tin); Sn-1 (SnF2/NaF); Sn-2 (SnF2/NaF/SnCl2); Sn-3 (SnCl2/NaF); Sn-4 (SnF2/SnCl2); Sn-5 (SnCl2/AmF/NaF/chitosan). Specimens were submitted to 5-day erosion-abrasion cycling. Surface loss (SL) was determined with an optical profilometer. Tin deposition on the tooth surfaces a

Quantitative assessment of tooth wear, alveolar-crest height and continuing eruption in a Romano-British population.

Although measurements from cement-enamel junction (CEJ) to alveolar crest (AC) have been used in assessing changes in alveolar-crest height as age or chronic inflammatory periodontal disease (CIPD) progresses, there is evidence from ancient populations that the position of AC remains almost constant throughout life and continuing eruption to compensate for attrition may explain why CEJ-AC measurements increase with age. Measurements of occlusal attrition and relationship of CEJ to AC were made on the cheek teeth of 500 Romano-British skulls by direct measurement or by reference to the fixed li

Measurements of tooth wear among Australian aborigines: II. Intrapopulational variation in patterns of dental attrition.

The possible implications of variations in dental attrition patterns have necessitated a detailed assessment of the types, ranges, and causes of tooth wear. Hear we employ measurements of postcanine occlusal wear facets from a sample population of extant Australian aborigines. A principal components analysis was applied as a tool in determining common types of attritional patterns. It was concluded that the range of intrapopulational variation in dental wear patterns must be attributed to a multiplicity of sources in addition to such commonly cited causes as dietary variations, gender, age, an

Tooth-Related Disease Detection System Based on Panoramic Images and Optimization Through Automation: Development Study.

BACKGROUND: Early detection of tooth-related diseases in patients plays a key role in maintaining their dental health and preventing future complications. Since dentists are not overly attentive to tooth-related diseases that may be difficult to judge visually, many patients miss timely treatment. The 5 representative tooth-related diseases, that is, coronal caries or defect, proximal caries, cervical caries or abrasion, periapical radiolucency, and residual root can be detected on panoramic images. In this study, a web service was constructed for the detection of these diseases on panoramic i

Root exposure in the primary dentition studied in human skulls.

The aims of the present study were to examine, on the primary dentition of 75 human dried skulls, the distance from the cemento-enamel junction (CEJ) to the alveolar bone crest, and to evaluate its relation to developmental age, bone morphology and attrition. The measurements from the CEJ to the alveolar crest were longer for the maxillary teeth, the second molars showed the shortest measurements, while the cuspids showed the longest. Significant positive partial correlations were found between age and the distance from the CEJ to the alveolar crest when controlling for attrition (r = 0.64), a

[Tooth pathology analysis of osteological material from the Medieval locality of Saint Pantelejmon church in Nis].

INTRODUCTION: Medieval necropolis at the porch of St. Panteleimon church in Nis, from 12th century represents a typical Serbian necropolis, which has its analogies in several areas in Serbia. Preservation of the skeletal remains belongs to category of good and medium preservation. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the work was to study the skeletal remains for the prevalence of tooth caries, localization of caries lesions, presence of abrasion, supragingival tartar and resorption of alveolar bone as the indicator of periodontal disease. METHOD: The analyses included 42 skeletal remains. The anthropologi

Perioesthetic approach to the diagnosis and treatment of carious and noncarious cervical lesions: Part I.

Several factors can contribute to the development of noncarious cervical lesions. Therefore, these lesions can be described and classified according to their primary etiology. Traditionally, most dentists have treated noncarious cervical lesions only with restorative methods, for example, composite resin restorations. However, in many cases, a periodontal or a combined restorative/periodontal approach provides a better esthetic and functional result. In part I of this two-part report, we provide a review of noncarious cervical lesions and a series of clinical case reports showing surgical tech
