Odonto-hypophosphatasia with Tooth Agenesis: a Case Report.

Odonto-hypophosphatasia (odonto-HPP) is a mild form of hypophosphatasia (HPP) characterised by premature exfoliation of primary and/or permanent teeth accompanied by low serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity levels, without abnormalities of the skeletal system. Tooth agenesis (TA) is a common developmental anomaly characterised by the absence of one or more teeth due to the failure of tooth formation. In this study, the present authors report on a family simultaneously affected by odonto-HPP and TA for the first time. Comprehensive genetic analysis identified two novel missense variants (c

Erupted compound odontome.

Odontomas are considered to be hamartomas rather than a true neoplasm. They consist chiefly of enamel and dentin, with variable amount of pulp and cementum when fully developed. They are generally asymptomatic and are included under the benign calcified odontogenic tumors. They are usually discovered on routine radiographic examination. Eruption of an odontoma in the oral cavity is rare. Peripheral compound odontomas arise extraosseously and have a tendency to exfoliate. In this article we are reporting a case of a 15-year-old girl with peripheral compound odontoma, with a single rudimentary t

Current concepts in vital pulpotomies in primary teeth.

Vital pulpotomies in primary teeth are performed to maintain the vitality of the pulp and to hold the tooth until it can be normally exfoliated. There exists much controversy surrounding the issue of pulpotomy agents, and the ideal pulp dressing material has not yet been identified. Therefore, it seems that formocresol will still be the first choice for pulpotomies in primary teeth until such agent is identified.

Marginal bone level in the normal primary dentition.

The aim of the present study was to establish the normal range for the radiographic distance between the cemento-enamel junction (CEJ) and the marginal bone level (MBL) in the primary dentition, and to relate this distance to various physiological and pathological factors. 128 children at the ages 7, 8 and 9 years took part in the study. Clinical and radiographic examinations of the mesial and distal surfaces of all primary molars and the distal surface of the primary canines were performed. The clinical examination included measurements of the amounts of plaque, bleeding on probing, probing d

Current concepts in hypophosphatasia: case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND.  Hypophosphatasia (HP) is characterized by defective mineralization of bone and teeth because of deficient alkaline phosphatase activity. There are generally six recognized clinical forms, of which the most severe is often lethal prenatally or early in life. In milder forms, such as odontohypophosphatasia (OHP), premature exfoliation of primary teeth may be the only clinical manifestation. CASE REPORT.  A 20-month-old girl was referred to the Specialist Paediatric Salaried Dental Service within the Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust with mobility of tooth numbers 71 and 81

Direct access to equivocal approximal carious lesions.

Approximal carious lesions provide unique diagnostic and restorative challenges for clinicians interested in conserving tooth structure. Direct access reduces diagnostic doubt and facilitates optimal restorative management. The direct access afforded to newly erupted posterior teeth provides an incomparable window of opportunity to the proximal surfaces. Optimal management is limited to the interval between exfoliation and eruption, because access is lost once the erupting adjacent permanent teeth come into contact. Diagnostic and restorative strategies accomplished after creation of direct ac

A long-term followup on the retention rate of zinc oxide eugenol filler after primary tooth pulpectomy.

A retrospective study of all the patients' records (> 6000) in a pediatric dental practice was done to assess ZOE retention after a pulpectomized primary tooth was lost and the succedaneous tooth erupted. There were 65 children with 81 ZOE pulpectomies done in 30 incisors and 51 molars. Pulpectomies were done at a mean chronologic age of 52.2 months and followed for a mean time of 90.8 months from time of placement. The initial radiograph after the pulpectomized tooth was lost, showed retained ZOE filler particles in 49.4% of the cases while 27.3% had retained ZOE a mean time of 40.2 months af

Dental complications of herpes zoster: Two case reports and review of literature.

Herpes zoster (HZ) (shingles) results due to reactivation of varicella-zoster virus. Unusual dental complications like osteonecrosis, exfoliation of teeth, periodontitis, and calcified and devitalized pulps, periapical lesions, and resorption of roots as well as developmental anomalies such as irregular short roots and missing teeth may arise secondary to involvement of 2nd or 3rd division of trigeminal nerve by HZ. Such cases pose both a diagnostic as well as a therapeutic challenge. We report two such rare dental complications of HZ-spontaneous tooth exfoliation and osteonecrosis of the maxi

Epidemiology and aetiology of malocclusion among Syrian paediatric patients.

AIM: The knowledge of the distribution and causes of malocclusion in early childhood can prevent such malocclusions and their consequences and possibly to reduce complex orthodontic treatment. METHODS: All children (n = 234; 116 male, 118 female, age 2-16) who presented with occlusal or functional problems at the Department of Paediatric Dentistry at Damascus University (1995-1999) were classified according to the type and causes of malocclusion and the subsequent orthodontic treatment. RESULTS: 57.3% of the malocclusions affected the anterior-posterior plane, 12.4% the vertical, and 35.9% t

[Exchange of dentition and its control. Overview of current knowledge and personal experience].

Physiological dentition exchange is often interfered with exogenous and endogenous factors. For this reason it must be steadily regulated. The authors present complex view on this topic based on literature studies and own experiences. The authors define fundamental principles "guided exchange", "tooth eruption" and "eruption path". Correct explication of these ideas is necessary for text understanding. Dentition exchange is considered as complex of eruption interactions of individual permanent teeth including molars. The project is based on idea that dentition exchange time is optimal for prev

Physiological root resorption of primary molars.

Physiological root resorption of primary molars was assessed using bitewings and orthopantomograms. Thirty-six per cent of teeth examined demonstrated reduced root resorption of one or more roots. Excepting the lower first primary molar, the present study recorded a relatively high incidence of uneven root resorption during the exfoliative process, particularly evident for the upper second primary molar. Discrepancy in size between the premolar and its predecessor, as well as the position of the developing permanent tooth in relation to primary root structure influences the pattern of root res

Chronology and histology of exfoliation and eruption of mandibular premolars in dogs.

Exfoliation of third deciduous mandibular premolars and their replacement by the third permanent premolars were compared in young dogs of purebred beagle and mongrel stock. Radiographic and histologic studies showed that eruption of the permanent premolar begins during the 16th postnatal week and is completed in 7 weeks. Root elongation proceeds with eruption, but fibers of the periodontal ligaments are not anchored in alveolar bone and do not attain their final orientation with respect to the long axis of the tooth until final phase of the eruptive period. These data define a predictable syst
