Potential of different fluoride gels to prevent erosive tooth wear caused by gastroesophageal reflux.

BACKGROUND: This in-vitro-study aimed to evaluate the potential of different fluoride gels to prevent gastroesophageal reflux induced erosive tooth wear. METHODS: Surface baseline profiles of a total of 50 bovine enamel specimens [randomly assigned to five groups (G1-5)] were recorded. All specimens were positioned in a custom made artificial oral cavity and perfused with artificial saliva (0.5 ml/min). Reflux was simulated 11 times a day during 12 h by adding HCl (pH 3.0) for 30 s (flow rate 2 ml/min). During the remaining 12 h (overnight), specimens were stored in artificial saliva and brus…

Obesity and tooth wear among American adults: the role of sugar-sweetened acidic drinks.

BACKGROUND: To explore the association between obesity and tooth wear among American adults and the role of sugar-sweetened acidic drinks consumption in explaining that association. METHODS: We analyzed data from 3541 adult participants in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Obesity was determined using the body mass index and tooth wear was assessed using the modified tooth wear index. Daily intake of four categories of drinks was estimated as the average (drinks/day) of two consecutive 24-h dietary recalls. The association between obesity and number of surfaces with modera…

Periodontal Disease and Tooth Wear in a Sample of German Soldiers with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder.

PURPOSE: Dental symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) patients include a majority of painful temporomandibular joint and masticatory muscle findings, restricted mouth opening, and pronounced attritions. Traumatic occlusal force resulting in injury of the teeth and/or the periodontal attachment apparatus may exceed the adaptive capacity of the individual person or site. This observational cross-sectional study in soldiers with PTSD and a non-PTSD control group after military deployments aimed to evaluate a possible relationship between bruxism and periodontal diagnosis. The use of fluoride for the prevention of dental erosion and erosive tooth wear in children and adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Erosive tooth wear (ETW) has gained increasing clinical relevance. It is estimated that worldwide 30-50% of deciduous and 20-45% of permanent teeth are affected. One of the most important nutritional factors causing ETW is the overconsumption of soft drinks, but also patient-related factors like reflux or eating disorders can lead to erosive lesions. Whether acids lead to erosive demineralisation depends on their degree of saturation with respect to tooth mineral at their actual pH. REVIEW: Fluoride compounds like sodium or amine fluoride seem to be of limited efficacy against ero…

Erosive tooth wear - a review on global prevalence and on its prevalence in risk groups.

Erosion is a common phenomenon in the general population of developed countries. However, due to variations in indices, sample sizes and general study designs, it is difficult to compare the various studies and to estimate actual global prevalence. Therefore, the aim of this present paper is to give a narrative overview on the data available on the global prevalence of erosion. Information on prevalence is not available from each country; in particular, data from Asia, Africa, South America, North America and large parts of South-Eastern Europe are unavailable. There is a large variation in gl

Assessing tooth wear progression in non-human primates: a longitudinal study using intraoral scanning technology.

Intraoral scanners are widely used in a clinical setting for orthodontic treatments and tooth restorations, and are also useful for assessing dental wear and pathology progression. In this study, we assess the utility of using an intraoral scanner and associated software for quantifying dental tissue loss in non-human primates. An upper and lower second molar for 31 captive hamadryas baboons (Papio hamadryas) were assessed for dental tissue loss progression, giving a total sample of 62 teeth. The animals are part of the Southwest National Primate Research Center and were all fed the same monke
