Chewing sticks: timeless natural toothbrushes for oral cleansing.

It is generally accepted that oral hygiene maintenance through regular removal of dental plaque and food deposits is an essential factor in the prevention of dental caries and periodontal disease. Methods for oral hygiene vary from country to country and from culture to culture. Despite the widespread use of toothbrushes and toothpastes, natural methods of tooth cleaning using chewing sticks selected and prepared from the twigs, stems or roots from a variety of plant species have been practised for thousands of years in Asia, Africa, the Middle East and the Americas. Selected clinical studies

Gingival recession in relation to history of hard toothbrush use.

Gingival recession studies in the U.S. have related primarily to sex and age with little consideration of toothbrush hardness. This preliminary study examined the relation between a history of hard toothbrush use and gingival recession. A total of 182 subjects, male and female, between 18 and 65 years of age, with a minimum of 18 natural teeth, no advanced periodontitis or history of periodontal surgery were examined. Gingival recession was scored as present whenever the free gingival margin was apical to the cemento-enamel junction and root surface was exposed. History of hard toothbrush use

Supervised toothbrushing programmes and at home brushing behaviour: a rapid review of evidence.

UNLABELLED: Supervised toothbrushing programmes (STPs) are widely implemented to improve children's oral health, yet it remains unclear which behaviour change techniques (BCTs) they use and whether these support children's toothbrushing at home. This rapid review addresses this evidence gap to inform programme design and evaluation. AIM(S): To conduct a rapid review of behaviour change techniques (BCTs) used in supervised toothbrushing programmes (STP1qs) and assess whether they support children's at-home toothbrushing. METHODS: A rapid review (Feb-Mar, updated Jul 2025) across PubMed, MEDLI…

Impact of Common Fruit Juices and Toothbrushing on the Discoloration of Primary Teeth.

Tooth discoloration is a common esthetic concern that may influence psychosocial development and peer interactions during childhood. This in vitro study aimed to compare the discoloration potential of fruit juices frequently consumed by children-black mulberry, organic pomegranate, and organic orange-and to evaluate whether brushing with fluoridated or non-fluoridated toothpastes reduces these changes in primary teeth. Eighty sound primary teeth extracted due to trauma, orthodontic indications, or natural exfoliation and free of caries, restorations, enamel defects, or pre-existing discolorati

Enamel Remineralisation with a Novel Sodium Fluoride-Infused Bristle Toothbrush.

This study aims to investigate whether toothbrushes with fluoride-infused bristles have any (re)mineralisation effects on bovine enamel. Bov … f the F atomic%, TF increased significantly. SEM revealed mineral deposition in the DM groups after toothbrushing. To conclude, toothbrushing effectively induces the microhardness of sound and demineralised enamel, while fluoride-infused bristles might be able to retain fluoride on the enamel surface.

[Gingival response by the effect of brushing method and hardness of the toothbrush bristle].

The effect of toothbrushing is plaque removal and gingival massage. However, intensive oral hygiene frequently results in gingival damage. The object of this study was to determine the damage to oral soft tissues resulting from three methods of brushing (roll, scrub, and bass method) and the use of toothbrushing with two different hardness (Hard: 10.2 kg/head, Soft: 3.2 kg/head). Six monkeys were used for this study. The mouth of each was divided into four sections: upper right for a control, upper left for the scrub method, lower right for the roll method, and lower left for the bass method. …
