Feline megaesophagus is a rare disorder characterized by esophageal hypomotility and dilation, resulting in regurgitation, weight loss, and occasionally death. This report describes the clinical and paraclinical findings of generalized megaesophagus with a possible contribution of toxocariasis in a kitten. A 2-month-old female cat was referred with chief complaints of lethargy, hyporexia, dyspnea, and vomiting/regurgitation. Physical examination of the kitten revealed bradycardia, bradypnea, hypothermia, dehydration, and lung crackles. The most notable laboratory results were leukopenia with s…

BACKGROUND: Eosinophilia is common in immigrants and travelers and is often linked to parasitic infections. While well-known helminths are routinely considered, Toxocara spp. remains underrecognized despite its global prevalence. This study aimed to identify undiagnosed T. canis infections in migrant and traveler patients from tropical and subtropical regions with eosinophilia of unknown etiology.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed patients evaluated at the Tropical Medicine Unit of the Complejo Asistencial Universitario de Salamanca between 2008 and 2023. Eligible participants were immigra

While ascariasis, trichuriasis, and hookworm infection dominate global efforts to control human soil-transmitted helminth infections, a picture is unfolding to suggest that toxocariasis is now a fourth and perhaps equally important parasitic disease. Toxocara eggs are widespread in the environment and practically ubiquitous in the soils of many subtropical and tropical regions of Asia, Africa, and the Americas. Human zoonotic infection is also highly prevalent in these areas, based on serologic studies to detect anti-Toxocara antibodies. The relevance of these findings to human and animal dise…

Seroprevalence studies on human toxocariasis help to assess the burden and the morbidity associated with this zoonosis. This review searched the seroprevalence studies and case reports in six North African countries: Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Sudan and Tunisia, since 1990. The search also included studies on the environmental factors related to the risk of transmission. Most of the published epidemiological studies were done in Egypt. Cross-sectional and case-control studies in Egypt demonstrated that toxocariasis is a significant zoonosis that could be associated with conditions like br…

AIM: To determine the main clinical signs and symptoms of adult toxocariasis and the relationship between anti-Toxocara canis antibody levels, symptoms, and the other biological parameters.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Prospective study conducted in the interval 2008 - 2011 in a series of 457 adult patients from Moldova, Romania. The ELISA method was used to detect the presence of IgG antibodies against T. canis. Fasting blood samples were collected from all patients who then underwent the following tests by standard methods: hemoglobin, hematocrit, eosinophils, lymphocytes, white blood cell count, …

Toxocariasis is caused by dog ascarid, Toxocara canis, forming eosinophilic inflammation such as eosinophilic abscess or granuloma in the liver and lungs. The lesions move slowly and thus the disease is called as visceral larva migrans. On CT or MR imaging, hepatic lesions are seen as multiple, ill-defined, oval lesions that measure 1.0-1.5 cm in diameter. Sometimes, the lesion may be angular or trapezoid. The lesions are usually best seen on the portal venous phase in dynamic contrast-enhanced CT and MR imaging; the lesions are either not seen or only faintly seen on arterial and equilibrium …

Toxocariasis is present worldwide but people living in areas with sanitary deficiencies are considered at the highest risk of infection, particularly children. The aim of this work was to know clinical and immunological aspects of infantile toxocariasis in a subtropical region in Argentina. For this purpose, 182 children of both sexes, 0-16 years old and with eosinophilia higher than 10%, living in Resistencia City (Northeast Argentina) were studied. Clinical examination, personal and epidemiological data recording, parasitological fecal examination and dosage of Toxocara canis IgG and IgM lev…

Toxocariasis is zoonotic disease caused by worms Toxocara canis and Toxocara cati. Human is its paratenic host. There are some clinical forms: Visceral larva migrans, cerebral larva migrans, ocular larva migrans and covert toxocariasis. At the present time diagnostics of toxocariasis is very difficult due to polymorphism of clinical symptoms and low specificity of laboratory tests.

To study the prevalence of toxocariasis and its impact on the reproductive health of inhabitants in the Saratov Region, enzyme immunoassay was used to examine 1404 patients, including 210 children, 912 females, and 282 males. Toxocariasis was shown to be a risk factor of male (oligoasthenozoospermia) and female (tuboperitoneal) infertility. The high incidence of toxocariasis in females with reproductive dysfunction (recurrent abortion) and an aggravated obstetric history complicated by chronic renal diseases is indicative of the existence of the urogenital form of toxocariasis. Toxocariasis gr…

Two cases of presumed ocular toxocariasis are reported in 19-year-old college students. One presented with an acute exudative intraocular inflammation, with marked peripheral eosinophilia, while the other had only minimal inflammatory changes of the disc and vitreous. Both had elevated Toxocara antibody titers by the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method. The simultaneous occurrence of ocular toxocariasis in friends and the early presentation and detection of their ocular lesions make these 2 cases interesting. The presence of positive laboratory data with only minimal clinical dise…

Toxocariasis is a cosmopolitan helminthiasis linked to contamination with Toxocara cati or Toxocara canis. Only six isolated cases of pleural toxocariasis have been reported in the literature. We describe a case of pleurisy with isolated eosinophilia varying between 600 and 1500/mm3 likely linked o presumptive toxocariasis in a 72-year-old patient. Our patient was admitted to hospital with severe dyspnoea, asthenia and diarrhoea. Imaging studies confirmed right unilateral pleurisy without any parenchymal involvement. Serology of serum and pleural fluid was positive for anti-Toxocara antibodies…

Toxocariasis, one of a group of parasitic diseases known as neglected parasitic infections, is a disease caused by the larvae of two species of Toxocara roundworms, Toxocara canis, from dogs, and less commonly Toxocara cati, from cats. Although most infected individuals are asymptomatic, clinical manifestations may include fever, fatigue, coughing, wheezing, or abdominal pain (visceral toxocariasis) or vision loss, retina damage, or eye inflammation (ocular toxocariasis). To assess U.S. pediatrician knowledge of toxocariasis, we conducted an electronic survey of American Academy of Pediatrics …

BACKGROUND: Toxocariasis is a globally distributed zoonosis. The most important definitive hosts are dogs, whereas humans serve as paratenic hosts. Transmission to humans occurs by accidental ingestion of eggs, e.g. by consumption of contaminated fruits or vegetables. Although exposure to Toxocara is usually considered as relatively benign, it is implicated in a range of neurological, ophthalmologic and other organ-specific conditions, some of them with grave consequences. This review provides an overview on the epidemiology, presentation and risk factors of exposure to Toxocara in Africa.
