Pressure therapy in the treatment of post-burn hypertrophic scar--a critical look into its usefulness and fallacies by pressure monitoring.

Pressure therapy is generally accepted as the best noninvasive means of preventing and controlling hypertrophic scarring after burn injury. Most studies in the past have failed to correlate clinical response with magnitude of the garment-scar interface pressure. This study looked critically at our usual techniques of pressure therapy using pressure 'sensors' manufactured locally and based on electro-pneumatic principles. Many pitfalls, such as large variations of pressure at different geometric sites on the body, elastic deterioration in garments, problems of garment manufacture, and the unfav

[Biomechanical study on contact pressure in the femoro-tibial joint].

To clarify the function of the menisci, dynamic contact pressure in femoro-tibial joints obtained from postmortem or surgical specimens with intact menisci, following partial and total meniscectomy was measured using transistor pressure transducers and Buldon tube pressure gauges. After meniscectomy, the peak contact pressure increased strikingly and contact area decreased markedly. The lower contact pressure after partial meniscectomy than after total meniscectomy is probably one reason why the results of partial meniscectomy are clinically much better than those of total meniscectomy. 4D Flow MRI hemodynamic benchmarking of surgical bioprosthetic valves.

PURPOSE: We exploited 4-dimensional flow magnetic resonance imaging (4D Flow), combined with a standardized in vitro setting, to establish a comprehensive benchmark for the systematic hemodynamic comparison of surgical aortic bioprosthetic valves (BPVs). MATERIALS AND METHODS: 4D Flow analysis was performed on two small sizes of three commercialized pericardial BPVs (Trifecta™ GT, Carpentier-Edwards PERIMOUNT Magna and Crown PRT®). Each BPV was tested over a clinically pertinent range of continuous flow rates within an in vitro MRI-compatible system, equipped with pressure transducers. In-hou

Pyloric motility. Sleeve sensor versus strain gauge transducer.

Intraduodenal infusion of nutrients has been shown by intraluminal sleeve-sidehole manometry to suppress antral contractions and stimulate isolated pyloric pressure waves (IPPWs) in humans. It is still unresolved, whether these pyloric contractions occur within an otherwise quiescent zone of motor and electrical activity and whether the presence of the sleeve sensor itself affects this nutrient-associated response. In four conscious dogs, comparisons were made between paired recordings of myoelectrical and motor activities of the antropyloroduodenal region with serosal strain gauge transducers

Temperature-Dependent Electromechanical and Acoustic Responses of a Tubular PZT-5A Transducer: Finite-Element Modeling and Experimental Investigation.

Temperature-induced variations in piezoelectric material properties can detune acoustic-logging transducers and alter their electrical, mechanical, and acoustic responses. This study establishes a temperature-dependent finite-element model of a tubular lead zirconate titanate (PZT-5A) transducer over 0-200 °C. Temperature-dependent dielectric, piezoelectric, and elastic parameters were implemented as constitutive functions. Frequency-domain impedance simulations were compared with impedance measurements over 20-200 °C, while transient fluid-loaded simulations and laser-vibrometry measurements

Detection of arterial pressure waveform error using machine learning trained algorithms.

In critically ill and high-risk surgical room patients, an invasive arterial catheter is often inserted to continuously measure arterial pressure (AP). The arterial waveform pressure measurement, however, may be compromised by damping or inappropriate reference placement of the pressure transducer. Clinicians, decision support systems, or closed-loop applications that rely on such information would benefit from the ability to detect error from the waveform alone. In the present study we hypothesized that machine-learning trained algorithms could discriminate three types of transducer error fro

Correlation of simultaneously monitored intrarenal and irrigation pressures during ureteroscopy: an in vivo pilot study.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between irrigation pressure and intrarenal pressure during ureteroscopy and to assess whether intrarenal pressure trends could be inferred via the flexible ureteroscope working channel using the pump release technique, with antegrade percutaneous measurement as the reference. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Pressures were recorded during ureteroscopic lithotripsy in nineteen patients undergoing endoscopic combined intrarenal surgery. Intrarenal pressure was continuously measured via an antegrade Chiba needle placed, whenever feasible, into the lower

Flexible Eyelid Pressure and Motion Dual-Mode Sensor Using Electric Breakdown-Induced Piezoresistivity and Electrical Potential Sensing.

Multiple ocular surface disorders are associated with the mechanical properties of the interface between the eyelid and cornea. Determining eyelid pressure is vital for diagnosing and preventing these disorders. However, current measurements rely on flat piezoresistive pressure sensor arrays that lack eye-motion sensing capabilities, resulting in discomfort and measurement inaccuracies. This study develops and evaluates an integrated, curved, flexible, dual-mode sensor array for simultaneous eyelid pressure and motion detection, using soft thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) films as transducers

An avoidable methodological failure in intracranial pressure monitoring using fiberoptic or solid state devices.

Failure of intraventricular pressure (IVP) measurement in case of catheter blockage is believed to be eliminated by using intraventricular microtransducers. We report about an avoidable methodological error, which may affect the reliability of IVP measurement with these devices. Intraventricular fiberoptic or solid state devices were implanted in 43 patients considered to be at risk for catheter occlusion. Two different types were used: devices where the transducer is placed inside the ventriculostomy catheter (Type A), and devices where the transducer is integrated in the external surface of

Acoustic stimulation on the round window for active middle ear implants.

Many clinical reports have discussed the effectiveness of stimulating the ear's round window (RW) with a tool to mitigate conductive and mixed hearing loss. The RW is one of the two openings from the middle ear into the inner ear. Various methods have been proposed to construct a highly efficient, easily implanted, and reliable RW transducer. Devices, however, such as floating mass transducers, have difficulty establishing proper contact without some degree of bone incision around the RW. Additionally, vibration energy may not be fully transmitted to the cochlea, but instead will be spread thr

Safe transthoracic left ventricular puncture performed with echocardiographic guidance.

Retrograde aortic left ventricular pressure recording is difficult to obtain and often unreliable in the presence of a mechanical aortic valve prosthesis. Under echocardiographic guidance, we have safely performed transthoracic left ventricular puncture for pressure recording in seven patients with an aortic valve prosthesis. The transducer is placed at the left sternal border and then slid laterally until the right ventricular cavity and interventricular septal echoes disappear, but before the echoes from the left lung are recorded. The chest wall is marked and the transducer is angled until

Carbon nanotube-cellulose ink for rapid solvent identification.

In this work, a conductive ink based on microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) was used to produce transducers for rapid liquid identification. The transducers are simple resistive devices that can be easily fabricated by scalable printing techniques. We monitored the electrical response due to the interaction between a given liquid with the carbon nanotube-cellulose film over time. Using principal component analysis of the electrical response, we were able to extract robust data to differentiate between the liquids. We show that the proposed liquid sensor c

Spatial resolution in plantar pressure measurement.

Peaks of pressure under the foot are of significance to the understanding and limitation of damage to plantar tissues. At present, many of the pressure measuring systems use a matrix of discrete transducer cells which each register the average pressure over their surface, and whose dimensions are such that they limit the accurate representation of the true peak pressure. The spatial filtering effect is investigated in this paper by analytical deduction from a pedobarographic record of high spatial resolution. For a barefoot diabetic patient who presents sharp peaks of pressure in the metatarsa

A model investigation of the velocity and pressure spectra in vascular murmurs.

A physical model consisting of an axisymmetrical jet in a rigid plexiglass pipe was used to study the flow and pressure fluctuations downstream from an aortic stenosis. The fluctuating velocity components, u and v, at several locations in the steady liquid jet were measured using a laser Doppler anemometer system. Simultaneous wall pressure fluctuations were monitored by an array of nine miniature pressure transducers wall mounted in the axial direction. This paper presents the detailed measurements of mean velocity profiles, turbulent intensity distributions and RMS pressure fluctuations. The

Air-coupled MUMPs capacitive micromachined ultrasonic transducers with resonant cavities.

This work reports performance improvements of air-coupled capacitive micromachined ultrasonic transducers (CMUTs) using resonant cavities. In order to perform this work, we have designed and manufactured a CMUT employing multi-user microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) processes (MUMPs). The transducer was designed using Helmholtz resonator principles. This was characterised by the dimensions of the cavity and several acoustic ports, which had the form of holes in the CMUT plate. The MUMPs process has the advantage of being low cost which allows the manufacture of economic prototypes. In this

A proposal method for the assessment of cerebrospinal fluid pressure in the cerebral ventricles.

This work presents a possible method of overcoming difficulties arising during the recording of intracranial pressure (ICP) from the cerebral ventricles of patients suffering from head injuries or intracranial space occupying lesions. The main difficulties in obtaining these measurements are the risk of infection and measurement errors caused by artefacts from head movements. These two problems arise when a cannula inserted into the cerebral ventricle is connected outside the skull to an external transducer measuring pressure. We propose a method utilizing a modified flushing shunt connected t

Inducing cavitation within hollow cylindrical radially polarized transducers for intravascular applications.

Thrombotic occlusions of large blood vessels are increasingly treated with catheter based mechanical approaches, one of the most prominent being to employ aspiration to extract clots through a hollow catheter lumen. A central technical challenge for aspiration catheters is to achieve sufficient suction force to overcome the resistance of clot material entering into the distal tip. In this study, we examine the feasibility of inducing cavitation within hollow cylindrical transducers with a view to ultimately using them to degrade the mechanical integrity of thrombus within the tip of an aspirat
