Generalized oscillator strengths of carbon disulfide calculated by multireference configuration interaction.

Transition energies and generalized oscillator strengths (GOSs) for transitions up to 6.3 eV of carbon disulfide were calculated at the multireference configuration interaction level. It is shown that the consideration of the vibronic coupling mechanism is essential to establish not only a quantitative but also a qualitative profile of the GOS, as a function of the momentum transferred, for the dipole forbidden transitions (Σg+1→1Σu - and Σg+1→1Δu). For the dipole allowed Σg +→Σu + transition, the calculated GOS is in good agreement with the available experimental data.

Regeneration of β-Carotene from the Radical Cation by Tyrosine and Tryptophan.

The phenolic amino acid tyrosine (Tyr) was found more efficient in regenerating β-carotene (β-Car) from the radical cation (β-Car(•+)) than tryptophan (Trp) in the presence of base for conditions where the reduction potentials for Trp and Tyr are comparable. Electron transfer from Tyr in 4:1 chloroform/methanol to β-Car(•+) in the presence of excess base, (CH3)4N(+)OH(-), had a rate close to diffusion control and a second-order rate constant in agreement with the Marcus theory for electron transfer when compared to plant phenols. A maximum of 40% β-Car was regenerated for ten times excess of T

Ab initio molecular dynamics of excited-state intramolecular proton transfer using multireference perturbation theory.

We present the first calculations of excited-state dynamics using ab initio molecular dynamics with a multireference perturbation theory description of the electronic structure. The new AIMS-CASPT2 method is applied to a paradigmatic excited-state intramolecular proton-transfer reaction in methyl salicylate, and the results are compared with previous ultrafast spectroscopic experiments. Agreement of AIMS-CASPT2 and experimental results is quantitative. The results demonstrate that the lack of an observed isotope effect in the reaction is due to multidimensionality of the reaction coordinate, w

Momentum-resolved non-resonant inelastic x-ray scattering study of C60.

For large molecular systems such as C60, accurate ab initio calculations remain challenging, making experimental methods a more reliable alternative. In this work, we employed the non-resonant inelastic x-ray scattering technique to study the electronic excitation dynamics of C60. The measurements spanned a momentum transfer range of 0.63-5.10 a.u. at a photon energy of ∼10 keV with an energy resolution around 1.0 eV. The dynamic structure factors in the excitation energy range of 5-500 eV and the generalized oscillator strengths for the core excitations of π*←1s were determined on absolute sc

Development and comparison of electrochemical peptide biosensor based on AuNPs@f-CNFs or AuNPs/rGO-COOH-Atp for detection of zearalenone in cereals.

Two simple and sensitive electrochemical biosensors have been developed and compared based on a specific peptide for detection of zearalenone (ZEN) in cereals. The two nanomaterials AuNPs@f-CNFs and AuNPs/rGO-COOH-Atp were introduced to enhance electron transfer and mass transfer, thereby improving the electrochemical signal. Compared with the two developed methods, the peptide biosensor with AuNPs@f-CNFs had higher sensitivity, better accuracy and excellent stability. Under the optimal conditions, the limit of detection (S/N = 3) was 0.79 pg/mL and the linear range was 0.02-12 ng/mL. It showe

Frequency-Dependent Premature Differentiation of Pheochromocytoma Cells Exhibits Band-Pass Filter Behavior Correlation with Intracellular Enzyme Activation Kinetics.

Advances in microfluidics, optogenetics and electronics have enabled the study of dynamically controlled inputs on cellular fate. Here, we applied a microfluidic system to deliver periodic inputs of growth factors to pheochromocytoma cells and measured the extent of premature differentiation as a function of input frequency. Epidermal growth factor-triggered differentiation peaked at two cycles/hour, while nerve growth factor-triggered differentiation peaked at one cycle/hour. To interpret the results, we analyzed a published model that attributed pheochromocytoma cell differentiation to the l

Monte carlo simulation study on the dose and dose-averaged linear energy transfer distributions in carbon ion radiotherapy.

Dose-averaged linear energy transfer (LETd) is conventionally evaluated from the relative biological effectiveness (RBE)-LETd fitted function used in the treatment planning system. In this study, we calculated the physical doses and their linear energy transfer (LET) distributions for patterns of typical CIRT beams using Monte Carlo (MC) simulation. The LETd was then deduced from the MC simulation and compared with that obtained from the conventional method. The two types of LETd agreed well with each other, except around the distal end of the spread-out Bragg peak. Furthermore, an MC simulati

Review and Theoretical Analysis of Fluorinated Radicals in Direct CAr-H Functionalization of (Hetero)arenes.

We highlight key contributions in the field of direct radical CAr- H (hetero)aromatic functionalization involving fluorinated radicals. A compilation of Functional Group Transfer Reagents and their diverse activation mechanisms leading to the release of radicals are discussed. The substrate scope for each radical is analyzed and classified into three categories according to the electronic properties of the substrates. Density functional theory computational analysis provides insights into the chemical reactivity of several fluorinated radicals through their electrophilicity and nucleophilicity

Dissolution of a well-defined trichloroethylene pool in saturated porous media: experimental results and model simulations.

An experimental mass transfer correlation was developed for trichloroethylene (TCE) pools dissolving in water-saturated porous media. A three-dimensional, bench-scale model aquifer previously designed by Chrysikopoulos et al. (Water Resour. Res. 36(7) (2000) 1687) was employed for collection of the experimental dissolution data. The unique aspect of the model aquifer design is the formation of a well-defined, circular TCE pool at the bottom of the model aquifer. Steady-state dissolved TCE concentrations at specific downstream locations within the aquifer were collected for each of the seven in

A dynamic system model of an off-road cyclist.

To optimize the performance of off-road bicycle suspension systems, a dynamic model of the bicycle/rider system would be useful. This paper takes a major step toward this goal by developing a dynamic system model of the cyclist. To develop the cyclist model, a series of four vibrational tests utilizing random inputs was conducted on seven experienced off-road cyclists. This allowed the transfer functions for the arms and legs to be determined. To reproduce the essential features (i.e., resonance peaks) of the experimental transfer functions, the system model included elements representing the

Dermoscopic CIELab Colorimetry for Longitudinal Monitoring of Fixed Target Lesions in Psoriasis: Objective Quantification of Background Color and Vascular Density.

PURPOSE: Objective longitudinal monitoring of a single psoriasis lesion remains underdeveloped. We evaluated the methodological feasibility of a quantitative fixed-target-lesion framework that derives continuous surface-color and vascular signals from dermoscopy, using CIELab as the measurement space rather than the clinical endpoint. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This single-center retrospective longitudinal study included 28 patients with moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis receiving biologic therapy (176 dermoscopic observations). Linear mixed-effects models (LMM) tested the longitudinal associati

Characterization and validation of electronic medical record data for pharmacoepidemiologic research.

PURPOSE: Electronic medical records (EMRs) are essential for pharmacoepidemiologic research; however, information on the quality of Canadian hospital EMR data is scarce. We aimed to test data validity in the Epic EMR for key pharmacoepidemiologic themes using QT-prolonging medications and major adverse cardiac events (MACEs) as the research question. METHODS: An entity relationship diagram (ERD) was developed to navigate >20,000 tables. Computational data validation (comparison with Epic SlicerDicer and Canadian Institute for Health Information Discharge Abstract Database (CIHI-DAD) data) and

Artificial intelligence-powered assisted ranking of sibling embryos to increase first cycle pregnancy rate.

RESEARCH QUESTION: Could EMBRYOLY, an artificial intelligence embryo evaluation tool, assist embryologists to increase first cycle pregnancy rate and reduce cycles to pregnancy for patients? DESIGN: Data from 11,988 embryos were collected via EMBRYOLY from 2666 egg retrievals (2019-2022) across 11 centres in France, Spain and Morocco using three time-lapse systems (TLS). Data from two independent clinics were also examined. EMBRYOLY's transformer-based model was applied to transferred embryos to evaluate ranking performances against pregnancy and birth outcomes. It was applied to cohorts to r

AltitudeOmics: Spontaneous Baroreflex Sensitivity During Acclimatization to 5,260 m: A Comparison of Methods.

INTRODUCTION: Baroreflex sensitivity (BRS) is essential to ensure rapid adjustment to variations in blood pressure (BP). Spontaneous baroreflex function can be assessed using continuous recordings of blood pressure. The goal of this study was to compare four methods for BRS quantification [the sequence, Bernardi's (BER), frequency and transfer function methods] to identify the most consistent method across an extreme range of conditions: rest and exercise, in normoxia, hypoxia, hypocapnia, and hypercapnia. METHODS: Using intra-radial artery BP in young healthy participants, BRS was calculated

A retrospective validation of ROTEM algorithms for detecting hyperfibrinolysis demonstrates poor agreement for prediction of in-hospital mortality and transfusion requirement in a general, non-cardiac, surgical population.

INTRODUCTION: Hyperfibrinolysis diagnosed on Rotational Thromboelastography (ROTEM) is associated with increased transfusion requirements and mortality in trauma. The diagnosis and significance of hyperfibrinolysis in a mixed, non-cardiac, general surgical population has not been investigated. We aimed to measure agreement between four ROTEM algorithms for diagnosing hyperfibrinolysis and transfusion requirements and mortality in general surgical patients. These algorithms mostly incorporate measures of early or late clot amplitude reduction on the Extrinsic Clotting Pathway Test with Tissue F

Permeability Imaging as a Biomarker of Leptomeningeal Collateral Flow in Patients with Intracranial Arterial Stenosis.

Different methods of angiography are of great clinical utility; however, it still remains unstandardized as which method would be suitable to determine cerebral collateral circulation. Here we compared digital subtraction angiography (DSA), computer tomography angiography (CTA) and dynamic contrast-enhanced T1-weighted imaging magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings in seven patients with severe intracranial arterial stenosis, and determine whether volume transfer constant (K(trans)) maps of permeability imaging could be used as the biomarkers of cerebral collateral circulation. We retrospec

A sheep in wolf's clothing: Listeria innocua strains with teichoic acid-associated surface antigens and genes characteristic of Listeria monocytogenes serogroup 4.

Listeria monocytogenes serotype 4b has been implicated in numerous food-borne epidemics and in a substantial fraction of sporadic listeriosis. A unique lineage of the nonpathogenic species Listeria innocua was found to express teichoic acid-associated surface antigens that were otherwise expressed only by L. monocytogenes of serotype 4b and the rare serotypes 4d and 4e. These L. innocua strains were also found to harbor sequences homologous to the gene gtcA, which has been shown to be essential for teichoic acid glycosylation in L. monocytogenes serotype 4b. Transposon mutagenesis and genetic

Customized Frozen Embryo Transfer after Identification of the Receptivity Window with a Transcriptomic Approach Improves the Implantation and Live Birth Rates in Patients with Repeated Implantation Failure.

The aim of this prospective study was to evaluate outcome benefits expected in repeated implantation failure (RIF) patients (n = 217) after customized embryo transfer based upon identification of the receptivity window by transcriptomic approach using the Win-Test. In this test, the expression of 11 endometrial genes known to be predictive of endometrial receptivity is assessed by RT-PCR in biopsies collected during the implantation window (6-9 days after the spontaneous luteinizing hormone surge during natural cycles, 5-9 days after progesterone administration during hormone replacement thera

U.S.-Canada cooperation: the U.S.-Canada air quality agreement.

The impetus for the Canada-U.S. Air Quality Agreement was transboundary acid rain in eastern North America. This problem drove the parties to develop a bilateral agreement that not only addressed this issue, but also set up a broad and flexible framework to address other air quality problems. In 2000, the Ozone Annex to reduce smog and its precursor pollutants was negotiated. A transboundary particulate matter (PM) science assessment in 2004 led to the commencement of negotiation of a PM annex in late 2007. Over the course of 15 yr, Canada and the United States also developed innovative cooper
