Multiple dural arteriovenous malformations. Report of two cases.

Two cases of multiple dural arteriovenous malformations (AVM's) in different locations are reported. One patient was diagnosed as having a dural AVM involving the right cavernous sinus that disappeared spontaneously 4 months after onset of symptoms. After an interval of 4 months, another dural AVM appeared involving the right lateral sinuses (transverse and sigmoid sinuses) with occlusion of the right sigmoid sinus. In the other patient, multiple dural AVM's were demonstrated on angiography, one involving the cavernous sinus and the other the left lateral sinus. The frequency of multiple occur

Gross Anatomical Description and CT Scan of the Dromedary Paranasal Sinuses.

Ten dromedary heads, aged between 12 and 18 months, were used to study the anatomy of the paranasal sinuses. The main aim of this work is to provide a detailed and comprehensive description of the anatomy of the dromedary paranasal sinuses and associated structures. By combining Computed Tomography (CT) scans and macroscopic anatomical sections, our study aimed to develop a CT atlas, accompanied by a 3D reconstruction of the healthy sinuses. The anatomical study of the dromedary paranasal sinuses was carried out using fenestrations and transverse anatomical sections and allowed us to study the

Dural sinus thrombosis and pseudotumor cerebri: unexpected complications of suboccipital craniotomy and translabyrinthine craniectomy.

OBJECT: The goal of this study was to document the hazards associated with pseudotumor cerebri resulting from transverse sinus thrombosis after tumor resection. Dural sinus thrombosis is a rare and potentially serious complication of suboccipital craniotomy and translabyrinthine craniectomy. Pseudotumor cerebri may occur when venous hypertension develops secondary to outflow obstruction. Previous research indicates that occlusion of a single transverse sinus is well tolerated when the contralateral sinus remains patent. METHODS: The authors report the results in five of a total of 107 patient

Dural arteriovenous malformations and papilledema.

We examined and managed two patients with posterior fossa dural arteriovenous malformations (DAVMs) and papilledema. Both DAVMs had venous drainage into the transverse, straight, and sigmoid dural venous sinuses. The mechanism of papilledema in the first case was presumed venous hypertension resulting in impaired cerebrospinal fluid absorption, as the malformation drained into the single transverse sinus. This was cured by selective arterial embolization of the causative DAVM. The second patient had venous sinus thrombosis that impaired venous drainage despite embolization. A lumboperitoneal s

Can we safely monitor posterior fossa intracranial pressure? A cadaveric study.

BACKGROUND: measuring intracranial pressure (ICP) is considered the gold standard of care for brain injury. While supratentorial ICP monitoring has been adopted everywhere, posterior fossa ICP monitoring is rarely performed. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the feasibility of inserting ICP sensors into the posterior fossa of cadavers, to measure ICP in the posterior fossa. METHODS: An ICP sensor was transcranially implanted into the posterior fossa of fifteen fresh adult cadavers. An extracranial point was defined in the retroauricular area 2 cm behind the tip of the mastoid process and 2

Treatment of dural arteriovenous fistula presenting as typical symptoms of hydrocephalus caused by venous congestion: case report.

A 76-year-old woman presented with a dural arteriovenous fistula (DAVF) manifesting as typical symptoms of normal pressure hydrocephalus such as progressive dementia, gait disturbances, and urinary incontinence. The cerebrospinal fluid pressure during lumbar puncture was 120 mmH(2)O. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging showed ventricular dilation and diffuse white matter changes, which were consistent with the symptoms of hydrocephalus. Cerebral angiography revealed a DAVF in the transverse-sigmoid sinuses with severe cortical venous reflux into the superior sagittal sinus. Tran

[Reconstruction of the venous outflow using a vein graft in dural arteriovenous malformation associated with sinus occlusion].

In some cases of dural arteriovenous malformations (dural AVMs) of the transverse-sigmoid sinuses, the presence of an occlusion or hypoplasia on the sinus contralateral to the affected side may significantly contribute to the development of intracranial hypertension. For these cases, closure of AV shunts or removal of the affected sinus may not be sufficient to improve intracranial hypertension. We encountered 2 cases of intracranial hypertension caused by dural AVMs at the transverse-sigmoid sinuses associated with disturbance of venous outflow contralateral to the lesion. Reconstruction of v

Delayed Dural Arteriovenous Fistula at the Transverse-Sigmoid Sinus Secondary to Petroclival Meningioma Surgery Via Far Lateral Approach.

Intracranial dural arteriovenous fistulas (DAVFs) are typified by pathological anastomoses between meningeal arteries and dural venous sinuses or cortical veins. There are many causes contributing to the etiology of DAVFs. Among the variable causes, acquired DAVFs secondary to craniotomy had rarely been reported, especially for delayed DAVFs at the transverse-sigmoid sinus. Till now, there are only 12 published cases of delayed DAVFs at the transverse-sigmoid sinus secondary to craniotomy. Herein, the authors describe such an extraordinary rare case secondary to petroclival meningioma resectio

Clinical presentation and patient outcomes following endovascular intervention for venous sinus diverticula: A single center experience.

INTRODUCTION: Venous diverticula are rare neurovascular anomalies consisting of outpouchings in venous sinus walls, occurring with a prevale … ikelihood 60.9 % (14/23) of complete symptom resolution with diverticula located in the sigmoid and transverse sinuses compared to 52.2 % (12/23) in the jugular bulb. Additionally, dominance of venous system was associated with a higher likelihood (p = 0.0528) of symptomatic diverticula occurring in the dominant venous sinus. Treatment for all diverticula patients i …

Infantile dural sinus malformation: curative embolization in two stages with the Scepter mini balloon microcatheter.

Endovascular embolization is the mainstay for treatment of infantile dural sinus malformations.1 2 Distal access and flow control are limiting factors in controlled embolization.3-6 The Scepter mini catheter (Microvention, Aliso Viejo, California, USA) is a low-profile, dual-lumen balloon microcatheter designed to provide navigability in small-caliber, tortuous intracranial vessels. In this technical video, we demonstrate the staged embolization of a dural sinus malformation with multiple arteriovenous fistulae using the Scepter mini catheter (video 1). In the newborn patient, embolizations we

An unusual presentation of cystic hydatid disease: Left temporal bone involvement with transverse sinus obliteration.

Cystic hydatid disease (CHD), caused by Echinococcus granulosus, remains a significant global health concern. While commonly affecting the liver and lungs, rare localizations can pose diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. This report presents a case of CHD affecting the left temporal bone, originating from the mastoid cells, resulting in left transverse sinus obliteration and cerebellar hemisphere compression. This unusual presentation highlights the importance of considering CHD in the differential diagnosis of neurological symptoms, including vertigo, even in the absence of more typical cli

Outflow Patency Correlates with Radiosurgical Outcomes of Lateral Sinus Dural Arteriovenous Fistula.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the impact of outflow patency on radiosurgical outcomes of lateral sinus dural arteriovenous fistulas (DAVFs). METHODS: We retrospectively examined 83 lateral sinus DAVFs treated with Gamma Knife radiosurgery (GKRS) between 1995 and 2020. Two neuroradiologists blinded to the therapeutic outcomes served as imaging evaluators on pre-GKRS digital subtraction angiography and magnetic resonance images. The sinovenous outflow of lateral sinus DAVF was scored using combined conduit score (CCS), ranging from 0 (total occlusion) to 8 (full patency). The patients' follow-up magnet

How I do it: Management of venous bleeding from the superior petrosal vein during endoscopic microvascular decompression.

BACKGROUND: A repair strategy for venous bleeding from the superior petrosal vein (SPV) is essential during endoscopic microvascular decompression. METHOD: Sliced oxycellulose seats are rounded off, making balls around 10 mm in diameter. When venous bleeding arises from the SPV, the first oxycellulose ball is placed just behind the SPV in the surgical view. A second ball is then applied in front of the SPV. The SPV is thus immediately and entirely covered by oxycellulose, and hemostasis is safely achieved with the preservation of the SPV. CONCLUSION: This oxycellulose ball technique offers s
