First Report of Trichophyton indotineae Infection in Hungary.

Trichophyton indotineae is associated with difficult-to-treat, often extensive dermatophytosis and resistance to the commonly used antifungal agents. Successful therapy often necessitates higher than usual doses of systemic therapy for prolonged periods. The spread of this species has gained much attention lately, as several European and other Western hemisphere countries have recently reported their first respective cases or increasing numbers of them. Until recently, this species was not described in Hungary. Here, we report a case caused by this species in a patient with a travel history to…

Molecular identification of isolates of the Trichophyton mentagrophytes complex.

Background: The Trichophyton mentagrophytes complex is the second most common causal agent of dermatophytosis. It comprises five species-T. mentagrophytes, T. interdigitale, T. erinacei, T quinckeanum, and T. benhamie, as well as nine different genotypes of T. mentagrophytes / T. interdigitale-which are morphologically similar; however, their susceptibility to antifungal agents may differ. For targeted therapy and better prognosis, it is important to identify these species at a molecular level. However, since many hospitals lack molecular methods, the actual aetiology of dermatophytosis caused…

An ultrastructural study of Trichophyton rubrum induced onychomycosis.

BACKGROUND: Trichophyton rubrum (T.rubrum) caused onychomycosis is the most common nail fungal disease. The common diagnostic methods are direct microscopic examination and fungal culture. In this study we used scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to study the subungual ultrastructural changes in T. rubrum induced onychomycosis. METHODS: Six outpatients with onychomycosis were recruited and T.rubrum infection was confirmed by fungal culture. Six toenail samples were collected and prepared for SEM characterization. The cultured fugal colonies were prepa…

Anti-trichophyton activity of protocatechuates and their synergism with fluconazole.

Dermatophytosis and superficial mycosis are a major global public health problem that affects 20-25% of the world's population. The increase … ic acid, 3,4-diacetoxybenzoic, and fourteen alkyl protocatechuates (3,4-dihydroxybenzoates) against Trichophyton rubrum and Trichophyton mentagrophytes and to further assess their activities when combined with fluconazole. Susceptibility and synergism assays were conducted as described in M38-A2 (CLSI), with modifications. Three strains of Trichophyton rubrum …

First case of Trichophyton soudanense isolated in Tunisia.

This is a first case of Trichophyton soudanense isolated from Ivoiran student in Tunisia. A 24-year-old man was addressed for extensive erythematous, scaling lesions. Examination disclosed tinea capitis, tinea corporis, tinea pedis, and onychomycosis of toenails and fingernails. Isolates were identified as Trichophyton soudanense on the basis of macroscopy and microscopy colony characteristics. The patient was treated with fluconazole, topical econazole, and ciclopiroxolamine varnish. Although T. soudanense was identified since the late 1950s outside the African continent especially in the Nor…

Photodynamic therapy of onychomycosis caused by Trichophyton rubrum.

A combination of topical and oral antifungals is widely used to treat onychomycosis, but treatment failure is common and oral drugs may cause toxicity and potential drug interactions. For this reason, new approaches and strategies should be considered. The following case shows that photodynamic therapy (PDT) may represent an alternative noninvasive approach to treatment of onychomycosis.

Tinea due to Trichophyton violaceum in Victoria, Australia.

From 1963 to 1995, twenty isolates of Trichophyton violaceum from cases of tinea capitis and tinea corporis were referred to the Mycology Reference Laboratory of the Microbiological Diagnostic Unit at the University of Melbourne (Parkville, Victoria, Australia). The patients had presented at clinics in metropolitan Melbourne and country towns in the state of Victoria, Australia. Most patients were immigrants from the Mediterranean region or were Australian Aborigines. The most recent isolates of T. violaceum came from Ethiopian immigrants. Details of these twenty case histories are presented. …

Global translational reprogramming in Trichophyton mentagrophytes-infected keratinocytes.

Dermatophytosis afflicts approximately 25% of the global population, representing a critical public health burden. Trichophyton mentagrophytes (T. mentagrophytes), a predominant zoonotic dermatophyte, is a significant contributor to disease morbidity. While the transcriptomic response of keratinocytes-the primary barrier of the skin-to T. mentagrophytes infection is well characterized, the genome-wide translational regulatory mechanisms remain unknown. Here, we employed parallel ribosome profiling (Ribo-seq) and RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) to dissect the genome-wide transcriptional and translatio…

Trichophyton rubrum Phenotypic Virulence Factors in Mexican Strains.

(1) Background: T. rubrum is the most important agent in tinea pedis, tinea manuum, tinea cruris, tinea corporis, and even in subcutaneous dermatophytosis. T. rubrum must overcome several obstacles to adhere, grow, and invade the host, for which their virulence factors are important. Previous studies have demonstrated the capability of T. rubrum strains to produce proteases, phospholipases, hemolysins, and elastases. The aim of this work was the genotypic identification of clinical isolates of T. rubrum to subsequently determine production of the main phenotypic virulence factors associated wi

Tinea incognito due to Trichophyton mentagrophytes: case report.

Tineas are frequent infections caused by dermatophytes that are able to invade keratinized tissue, causing rounded, erythematous, scaly lesions. Nonetheless, in tinea incognito the lesions are modified because of inappropriate use of topical corticosteroids or calcineurin inhibitors, making it difficult to diagnose. We present a case of a 12-year-old male child that presents with erythematous lesions on the right eyebrow, which at first was diagnosed as a contact dermatitis, so corticosteroids were indicated. The lesions became more inflammatory and a fungus culture was requested, which was po

Trichophyton onychocola sp. nov. isolated from human nail.

A previously undescribed Trichophyton species was isolated from the nail of a 33-year-old man with a history of probable distal lateral subungual onychomycosis (without confirmation by mycological examination). The infection occurred for the first time five years earlier (in 2006) and affected the right great toenail, with complete clinical remission after treatment with ciclopirox olamine. This undescribed species was isolated during probable relapse in 2011, but its etiological significance was not confirmed, that is, direct microscopy was negative and additional clinical samples were not co…

Trichophyton mentagrophytes cause underestimated contagious zoophilic fungal infection.

Trichophytia infection, paraphrased cuddly toy mycosis, occurs primarily in prepubertal children, occasionally in infants and adults. The presented case shows the highly contagious infection of four family members with Trichophyton mentagrophytes. Effective treatment requires detailed diagnostic: identifying the dermatophyte, finding the infection source, treating the infection carriers. Tinea must be treated systemically and topically because of infectivity and ignitability. Systemic terbinafine or fluconazole treatment and topical fixed combination isoconazole nitrate/diflucortolone valerate…

Trichophyton mentagrophytes-associated Majocchi's granuloma treated with cryotherapy.

We here report the case of a woman with dermatophytosis of the thighs due to Trichophyton mentagrophytes where an unusual clinical picture posed considerable diagnostic and therapeutic problems. She presented numerous skin lesions located on the dorsolateral face of the left thigh and the medial surface of the right calf. The initial lesions consisted of small itchy pustules that evolved to exfoliation after scratching. Results of histopathologic examination ofa skin biopsy were consistent with dermatophytosis, although the negativity of PAS staining did not allow confirmation of this diagnosi…
