Predisposition to trichuriasis in mice is reflected in the inability of certain strains, or certain individuals within strains, to express protective immunity. Twenty patients with massive trichuriasis were studied with double contrast barium enema. The following changes were observed: 1) Impregnation defects of the colonic wall probably due to abundant mucous secretions. 2) Granular features. 3) Pear-shaped caecum. 4) Radiolucid ringlike images with some contrast material in its center, similar to those seen in lymphoid hyperplasia. On closer observation it was seen that the radiolucid ring was not complete and was continued by a prolongation which corresponds to the whipworm. This feature is central to the differential diagnosis.

Albendazole, a broad spectrum anthelmintic, was administered as a 400 mg single dose to 20 patients harbouring Ascaris (ten cases), hookworms (four cases each of Ancylostoma duodenale and Necator americanus) and trichuriasis (ten cases). Faeces were obtained before treatment and during the following five days. Coprocultures were made for 90 days for Ascaris and Trichuris eggs, hookworm eggs were cultured by the Harada-Mori technique for at least eight days. Albendazole was ovicidal against all four genera of nematodes.

Mebendazole (methyl-5-benzoylbenzimidazole-2-carbamate: Vermox), a broad spectrum anthelmintic, cured 22 (88%) children with symptomatic trichuriasis when given as a single 6-day course in a dosage of 100 mg twice daily. A further 3 (12%) were cured after a repeat 6-day course of therapy. Thus complete parasite eradication was achieved in all. The administration of an antidiarrheal agent, loperamide hydrochloride (Imodium), appeared to enhance the efficacy of mebendazole. Both drugs were well tolerated and completely free of any toxic effects.

Trichuriasis is a serious threat to the economic development of animal husbandry. This research aimed to establish a droplet digital PCR (ddPCR) method to detect Trichuris spp. for the early diagnosis and prevention of trichuriasis in sheep. The real-time quantitative PCR (qPCR) and ddPCR methods were used for the detection of nematodes by targeted amplification of the ITS gene. The anthelmintic drugs mebendazole (Vermox) and levamisole were tested in patients for their possible ovicidal effects on the eggs of Trichuris trichiura and Ascaris lumbricoides. The patients studied were 20 Africans of Sierra Leone, and 11 children of Nassau, Bahamas. Egg counts were made before treatment, and for 5 consecutive days following treatment.
