Trichuris trichiura is a soil-transmitted helminth which is prevalent in warm, moist, tropical and subtropical regions of the world with poor sanitation. Heavy whipworm can result either in Trichuris dysenteric syndrome - especially in children - or in a chronic colitis. In heavy infections, worms can spread proximally and may cause ileitis. Here we provide first microscopic evidence for a T. trichiura adult worm embedded in the rectum of a post-Colonial Brazilian adult mummy. During Colonial and post-Colonial times, many European chroniclers described a parasitic disease named Maculo whose sy…

Strong resistance to reinfection developed in pigs as a result of trickle inoculations with Trichuris suis (250 infective eggs twice weekly for 4 weeks). At challenge (4000 eggs) 8 weeks after the last trickle inoculation, we observed a 96% reduction in the mean number of established challenge worms in immunized (TRI/CHA) compared with non-immunized controls (CON/CHA) (74 v. 1753; P = 0.004). Moreover, the total faecal egg excretion was significantly lower in immunized pigs compared with controls (P = 0.0003). The trickle inoculations depressed pig weight gains over the 8-week course of immuni…

A 65-year-old Japanese female was admitted to our hospital because of right lower abdominal pain. Laboratory and roentgenological tests revealed no abnormalities. Repeated stool examinations revealed no ovum or parasite. However, colonoscopic examination demonstrated the presence of a parasite on the edematous mucosa of cecum. The adult male whipworm (Trichuris trichiura) was then removed endoscopically. Her symptoms disappeared quickly, and no additional parasite was found in the feces during or after the mebendazole treatment. Repeated stool examinations failed to show any ova, because this …

An outbreak of Trichuris trichiura in a ward for the severely mentally handicapped affected 22 of 29 patients. There was concurrent carriage of non-pathogenic Entamoeba histolytica in 59% of these patients. Heavy contamination of soil was found in the patients' recreation area. The management of the outbreak is discussed.

The review argues for a reappraisal of the health significance of the human whipworm, Trichuris trichiura. Infections with this geohelminth are at least as prevalent as Ascaris lumbricoides in many localities, and are associated with significant morbidity. Infection may result in severe trichuriasis syndrome or, more frequently, in a chronic colitis associated with growth stunting. Under-reporting of the chronic manifestations of disease has resulted in a gross under-estimation of the health impact of trichuriasis. Furthermore, estimation of the population dynamical parameters of T. trichiura …

Acute obstruction of the cecum due to Trichuris trichiura developed in a 25-year-old Puerto Rican man who had emigrated to the northeastern United States five years previously. Obstruction was caused by a large tangled mass of whipworms . Perforation of the ascending colon also occurred and resulted in pericolic abscess. This case is the first report of intestinal obstruction by Trichuris. Because infection with Trichuris is endemic to Puerto Rico but not to the northeastern United States, it appears that the patient had harbored latent parasitic infection for the prolonged period of time sinc…
