BACKGROUND: Historically, 10 TU has been employed in Australia and the United Kingdom to perform the tuberculin skin test (TST). However, this makes it difficult to compare the rates of TST positivity with other countries such as the USA who use 5 TU. In a patient with active Behçet's syndrome, every needle puncture produces a pustule. We report herein a patient with Behçet's syndrome that presented as uveitis and erythema nodosum and developed later to the full blown picture of the disease. Reaction to a tuberculin test was found to be strongly positive, since it involved a needle puncture. The test was interpreted as if the patient was tuberculous.

BACKGROUND: T-cell interferon-gamma release assays (IGRAs) have been shown to be effective tools for the detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection, offering an enhanced specificity compared to the tuberculin skin test (TST). Most tuberculosis (TB) contact studies have shown a better correlation of IGRA with the intensity of M. tuberculosis exposure than that obtained using the TST. However, the correlation between tests performed before and after the tuberculin 'window period' (time between infection and when the immunological response becomes measurable) remains to be studied.

Bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccination generally leads to scar formation and tuberculin skin test (TST) reactivity. This study aimed at analysing these 2 parameters and their correlation in a setting with a low prevalence of tuberculosis. Retrospectively, we analysed 314 children and 390 adults living in Sweden and known from records or individual recall to have undergone BCG vaccination. Tuberculin susceptibility was studied from the Mantoux test with 2TE in 253 children aged 14 years and during all previous years of their life. Positive tests were recorded in 72.4% of cases; doubtful tests were in 6.7%, and negative ones in 20.9%. Infection was diagnosed in 33.9 +/- 2.9%. As no recent report has been made concerning the tuberculin survey of healthy young adults in Japan, we checked all the Tohoku University undergraduate and postgraduate students by tuberculin test for the assessment of TB-situation in 1998.
