BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis is still an important problem in developing countries. The tuberculin skin test (TST) is used for the identification of latent tuberculosis (TB) infection. This study aimed to evaluate the TST results of healthy employees of different departments in chaharmahal province, Iran.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was done on 1,424 healthy employees from 49 different departments in Chaharmahal Province. The tuberculin skin test was done with Purified Protein Derivative (PPD) solution. The induration was evaluated 48-72 hours later.

To examine whether treatment with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB), which causes transient cellular immunity depression, influences tuberculin skin testing (TST) interpretation. The study was also aimed to assess the degree of cellular immunity depression following open heart surgery. Fifteen children from developing countries with latent tuberculosis (TST >or=10 mm), undergoing open heart surgery had their TST repeated within 48-72 h following surgery. We compared the size of skin test induration before and after surgery and the relation of postsurgery skin induration to time on CPB (pump time).

BACKGROUND: T-cell interferon-gamma release assays (IGRAs) have been shown to be effective tools for the detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection, offering an enhanced specificity compared to the tuberculin skin test (TST). Most tuberculosis (TB) contact studies have shown a better correlation of IGRA with the intensity of M. tuberculosis exposure than that obtained using the TST. However, the correlation between tests performed before and after the tuberculin 'window period' (time between infection and when the immunological response becomes measurable) remains to be studied.

To assess the utility of booster testing and to identify factors associated with a positive booster test, two-step tuberculin testing was performed in drug users recruited from methadone treatment. Participants also received a standardized interview on demographics and testing for HIV and CD4+ lymphocyte count. Tuberculin skin test (TST) interpretation can be confounded by Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) vaccination and infection with nontuberculosis mycobacteria (NTM). Authors used the tuberculin test (modified Koch's test) in 84 urological patients. In 22 of them, renal tuberculosis was revealed by this test and then confirmed by other methods. Subcutaneous injection of tuberculin in patients with renal tuberculosis was followed with the increase of leucocyturia and erythrocyturia. This reaction was especially expressive in the early stages of renal tuberculosis. The tuberculin test must be widely used in first-stage laboratory investigations in urological patients because it is easy and rapid.
