Elucidating the crystal structure of botulinum neurotoxin type A: a personal remembrance.

Botulinum neurotoxins (BoNTs) are the bacterial proteins responsible for the flaccid paralysis and lethal effects of botulism. They act by inhibiting neurotransmitter release, primarily at peripheral cholinergic nerve terminals, and have traditionally been classified into seven serotypes, designated with letters A through G. Over a long history of investigation, scientists and physicians have learned to harness the selectivity and potency of these neurotoxins to advance therapeutic applications. These advances have come by leveraging the basic science understanding of how the BoNT's work. The

Type D personality is associated with hyperlipidemia in patients with myocardial infarction.

OBJECTIVE: There are many studies indicating the role of psychological factors in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular disorders. Type D as a new personality construct has been proposed by Denollet, characterized by the joint global traits including negative affectivity and social inhibition. The purpose of this study was to examine the link between type D personality and hyperlipidemia in patients with myocardial infarction (MI). MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred and seventy-six consecutive patients admitted to the cardiac care unit (CCU) wards of nine hospitals in Isfahan, Iran, following MI

Ethnicity and Type D personality as predictors of heart rate variability.

This study examined the relationship between Type D personality and heart rate variability (HRV) during three guided imagery experiences (baseline, stressful, and uplifting) in a non-medical sample. The interaction between African-American ethnicity and Type D personality was predictive of both low and high frequency HRV during stressful imagery experiences. The importance of identifying group influences when assessing psychological and cardiovascular health was discussed.

Type-D personality and cortisol in survivors of acute coronary syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that Type-D personality is associated with elevated cortisol levels in patients 4 months after an acute coronary syndrome (ACS). METHODS: Salivary cortisol profiles were measured at home in 70 coronary heart disease patients (Mean age = 60.90 years, SD = 10.7, 17% female) 4 months after hospitalization for ACS. Eight saliva samples were taken over the course of 1 day. RESULTS: Thirty eight percent of the ACS patients were defined as Type-D. Cortisol profiles showed a typical diurnal pattern, with low levels in the evening, high levels early in the day. Type-

Are there differential relationships between different types of childhood maltreatment and different types of adult personality pathology?

While considerable data support the relationship between childhood trauma and adult personality pathology in general, there is little research investigating the specific relationships between different types of childhood maltreatment and adult personality disorders. The present study tested a model incorporating five a priori hypotheses regarding the association between distinct forms of childhood maltreatment and personality pathology in 231 psychiatric patients using multiple self-report measures (Personality Diagnostic Questionnaire-4th Edition, Child Trauma Questionnaire, Conflict in Tacti

Type-D personality exerts a stable, adverse effect on vital exhaustion in PCI patients treated with paclitaxel-eluting stents.

OBJECTIVE: Vital exhaustion is associated with the pathogenesis of cardiovascular disease (CVD), but its prevalence after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) with drug-eluting stent implantation, as well as the impact of personality on exhaustion, is not known. In PCI patients, we examined (a) the prevalence of exhaustion, (b) the impact of type-D personality on exhaustion over time, and (c) the clinical significance of type-D personality compared with gender and age as predictors of exhaustion. METHODS: Consecutive patients (n=419) with stable or unstable angina treated with PCI with dr

The personality factor in premium IOLs selection: quantifying Myers-Briggs personality types influence among cataract surgeons.

BACKGROUND: Phacoemulsification with intraocular lens (IOL) implantation is the standard treatment for cataracts. The surgeon's personality may influence IOL selection. Understanding whether Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) personality profiles affect IOL selection accuracy and preferences can enhance patient satisfaction. Therefore, this retrospective single-center, cross-sectional study was conducted to evaluate the accuracy of IOL selection among cataract surgeons with different MBTI personality profiles and assess whether personality traits influence IOL preferences. METHODS: A total of

[Type D personality style and back pain : A narrative overview of the relevance of psychosocial factors in orthopedic pain therapy].

BACKGROUND: The Type D personality ("distressed personality") is characterized by a combination of negative affectivity and social inhibition. While this personality style was originally researched in the context of cardiovascular disease, recent studies also show a significant association with chronic pain disorders, especially back pain. OBJECTIVES: This narrative review examines the current state of knowledge on the relationship between type D personality and back pain. The aim is to analyze possible psychological, behavioral, and biological mechanisms and to derive clinical implications f

Demographic, psychiatric, and personality correlates of adults seeking treatment for disordered gambling with a comorbid binge/purge type eating disorder.

Preliminary evidence suggests that binge/purge type eating disorders and gambling disorder may commonly co-occur. However, this dual-diagnosis population remains understudied. The present research examined the prevalence rates and correlates of binge/purge type eating disorders (i.e., bulimia nervosa, binge-eating disorder, and anorexia nervosa binge/purge type) among adults seeking treatment for their gambling (N = 349). In total, 11.5% of the sample (n = 40) met criteria for a binge/purge type eating disorder, most commonly bulimia nervosa (n = 33). There was a higher preponderance of binge/

Physician burnout and type D personality relate to pericoronary fat phenotype and role of sympathetic activation: a cross-sectional study.

Biological pathways linking psychosocial stress to coronary pathology remain elusive. Burnout and type D personality (TDP), defined by negative affectivity and social inhibition, are prevalent among physicians and associated with cardiovascular risk. We investigated whether burnout and TDP relate to pericoronary adipose tissue (PCAT) attenuation, a noninvasive imaging marker of fat composition and coronary inflammatory signaling. We further investigated whether sympathetic activation is implicated as an indirect pathway in this association. Systemic inflammation was examined as a downstream co
