The objective of the study was to evaluate the usefulness of ultrasonic methods: ultrasonography and Doppler C.W. in the diagnosis of superficial varicose phlebitis. Especially, measurement of the venous pressure (V.P.) at the posterior tibial (P.T.) and the greater saphenous vein (G.S.V.) in clino and orthostatism, have proved to be useful. In ten cases, one patient with a varicose in the thigh, was also found to have a femoral vein thrombosis secondary to a deep thrombus entering the junction. Microbial spoilage of wine can lead to significant economic loss. At present sulfur dioxide is the main additive to juice/must/wine to prevent and control microbial spoilage. As an alternative, or complement to SO(2), high power ultrasonics (HPU) may be used to control microbes. Several wine spoilage yeasts and bacteria were treated with HPU in saline (0.9% w/v NaCl), juice and red wine to assess their susceptibility to HPU. The authors used ultrasonic devices in operations on the vertebral column in experiments in 92 animals in order to study the effect of ultrasound on osteogenesis. In the clinic the ultrasonic devices were used in operations on the vertebral column of 30 patients with lumbar osteochondrosis. Positive results were obtained in 29 patients.
