Composition of urinary calculi in infants: a report from an endemic country.

Pediatric urolithiasis remains endemic in low-resource countries where infants constitute 17-40% of all children with urolithiasis. This study reports socio-economic factors, medical history and chemical composition of urinary stones in 976 infants of up to 2 years of age. Between 1992 and 2016, 976 infants presented to our institute with 1038 stones. Chemical composition of stones was analyzed by Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The mean age of infants was 19.5 ± 5.74 months with a M:F ratio of 5.5:1. Half (50%) of the infants were rural dwellers, 90% belonged to low socio

Use of laparoscopic-assisted cystoscopy for removal of urinary calculi in dogs.

Urinary calculi were removed by means of laparoscopic-assisted cystoscopy in 3 dogs. Two small abdominal incisions were made--1 for a laparoscope and 1 for placement of a Babcock forceps to aid in grasping and lifting the urinary bladder to the abdominal wall. A cystoscope and instruments for calculi removal were passed through a small cystotomy. Biopsy of the urinary bladder or other abdominal organs could also be performed by use of this technique. Laparoscopic-assisted cystoscopy was minimally invasive and provided clear images of the mucosal surface of the urinary bladder and proximal port…

Analysis of purines in urinary calculi by high-performance liquid chromatography.

A high-pressure liquid chromatography method has been developed for the analysis in urinary calculi of six purines: uric acid, 2, 8-dihydroxyadenine, xanthine, hypoxanthine, allopurinol, and oxypurinol. Separation was conducted isocratically on a reversed-phase column, using 50 mM phosphate buffer (pH 5.5) / methanol (97/3, v/v) as mobile phase. Limits of detection, depending on compound, ranged from 7 to 28 microg/g stone weight. Hitherto, no reports have appeared on other purines present with uric acid in stones, due to lack of a sensitive and specific analytical method. We have now found th…

[Fragmentation of urinary calculi using the Lithoclast EMS. Technique and results].

The Lithoclast is an endoscopic lithotriptor which uses the ballistic energy produced by a small hand-held apparatus, by the movement of a small metal part (the projectile) driven by a jet of compressed air. The energy is transmitted to a metal rod whose diameter is selected according to the application: 0.8 or 1 mm in the ureter; 2 mm in the bladder and kidney. We have used this apparatus to treat 40 stones in 39 patients (25 ureteric stones, 11 renal stones, 4 bladder stones). Satisfactory fragmentation was obtained for 39 of the 40 stones (97.5%). The apparatus is very easy to use in the ki

Urinary tract calculi dissolved by means of renacidin. An experimental study.

Removal urinary tract calculi by surgery may be difficult in patients with poor health or in patients who have been operated on earlier. By … c components was carried out using the microradiographic technique. The speed of the dissolution of urinary calculi varied between 0.43 and 7.7 mg/h. Two stones were easily dissolved (5 and 7.7 mg/h) while the three others were more resistant (0.5, 1.0 and 3.0). Diluted renacidin fluid (1:3) was less effective and reduced dissolution from 5.8 to 0.7 mg/h. The spe …

[Spontaneous urinary extravasation in the retroperitoneum due to ureteral calculi obstruction].

The diagnosis and management of 12 patients with spontaneous urinary extravasation due to ureteral calculous obstruction are described. Contrary to the "frank" rupture most cases can be managed without surgical intervention. The presistence of extravasation must be the reason for tumour exclusion. The renal fibrolipomatosis was seen as the possible late result of the extravasation.

Crystalline phase differentiation in urinary calcium phosphate and magnesium phosphate calculi.

UNLABELLED: Phosphates are encountered as the main components in about 15% of urinary calculi. Except for struvite, no specific correlations have been found between the crystalline phase of the phosphates and the cause of nephrolithiasis. OBJECTIVE: The relationship between aetiological factors and crystalline phases or carbonate rate in calcium phosphate stones were assessed. MATERIAL AND METHODS: From a series of 1148 phosphate calculi, we investigated the relationship between composition and aetiological factors. RESULTS: Carbapatite was the most frequent crystalline phase (74.0%). It wa…

[18 cases of surgically treated parathyroid adenoma responsible for urinary calculi].

The development of urinary lithiasis as a result of parathyroid lesions is not an exceptional occurrence and should be routinely looked for. Among the 30 cases of parathyroid adenoma identified during a 25-year period in a department of urology in a medium-sized town, 18 were detected following the occurrence of urinary lithiasis. Clinical features in these 18 cases, as well as the investigations that led to the discovery of the adenoma are reported. The surgical cervicotomy technique used by the same operators is briefly described. In other countries (Germany, Switzerland, Italy), the detecti

Percutaneous removal of upper urinary tract calculi: experience with ultrasonic lithotripsy.

From October 1983 to March 1985, the authors removed upper urinary tract calculi percutaneously in 102 patients. In 89 patients, stones required disruption with an ultrasonic lithotriptor before removal. Fifty-two patients had a stone in the renal pelvis and 20 had calyceal stones only; 21 had stones at both sites and 9 had a stone in the upper ureter. Complete removal of all stone material was achieved in 67 of 68 patients with a solitary calculus, in 13 of 26 with multiple calculi and in 6 of 8 with ureteric calculi. Complications were minimal; three patients had pulmonary edema postoperativ

[Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy for urinary calculi in an ileal reservoir following reconstruction of the urinary bladder].

A new method for reconstruction of the urinary bladder was introduced by Taguchi in 1977. It consisted of two components; making of pseudo-urethra and the reconstruction of urinary reservoir in the pelvis. The latter was made of the ileum and the peritoneum with temporary use of Japanese paper. This operative method was applied to a 28-year-old female patient when she had cystectomy and bilateral ureterostomy. Thereafter she had has no trouble for 13 years. However, her recent rentogenogram showed urinary tract calculi in the reservoir. Endoscopic treatment was not indicated because of the def

Initial prospective study of ambulatory mPCNL on upper urinary tract calculi.

BACKGROUND: exposure to dioxins has been associated with an increased risk of soft-tissue sarcoma (STS). In a study relating to 1989-1998, a significant excess of STS was found in the population living within a 2-kilometre radius of an industrial incinerator located inside a Mantua industrial site. In the years 1974-1991, the incinerator burned hazardous chlorine-containing waste that resulted in the emission of dioxins. After 1991, it was exclusively fed with organic synthetic products not containing chlorine. OBJECTIVES: the aim of this case-control study was to estimate the STS risk, for 1

Association between prostate cancer and urinary calculi: a population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Understanding the reasons underlying the emerging trend and the changing demographics of Asian prostate cancer (PC) has become an important field of study. This study set out to explore the possibility that urinary calculi (UC) and PC may share an association by conducting a case-control study on a population-based database in Taiwan. METHODS: The cases of this study included 2,900 subjects ≥ 40 years-old who had received their first-time diagnosis of PC and 14,500 randomly selected controls without PC. Conditional logistic regressions were employed to explore the association betw…

Are prostatic calculi independent predictive factors of lower urinary tract symptoms?

We determined the correlation between prostatic calculi and lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), as well as the predisposing factors of prostatic calculi. Of the 1 527 patients who presented at our clinic for LUTS, 802 underwent complete evaluations, including transrectal ultrasonography, voided bladder-3 specimen and international prostatic symptoms score (IPSS). A total of 335 patients with prostatic calculi and 467 patients without prostatic calculi were divided into calculi and no calculi groups, respectively. Predictive factors of severe LUTS and prostatic calculi were determined using un

Bilateral urinary calculi after treatment with a silicate-containing milk thickener.

UNLABELLED: Nephrocalcinosis and/or urinary calculi are rare in infants. Furosemide treatment during the neonatal period, vitamin D intoxication, hereditary diseases such as hyperoxaluria or distal tubular acidosis are among the most common aetiologies. We report the case of a 6-month-old boy with an extra-hepatic biliary duct atresia treated by the Kasai procedure and a gastro-oesophageal reflux treated with a silicate containing milk thickener (Gelopectose, 5.5% colloidal silicate) since the neonatal period. He did not present any other endogenous risk factor for urinary stone formation (nor…

The role of ultrasonography in detecting urinary tract calculi compared to CT scan.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the accuracy of ultrasonography (US) in measuring the urinary tract stone using non-contrast computed tomography (NCCT) as the standard reference. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 184 patients suspected with urolithiasis who had undergone NCCT and US radiologic investigation from 2015 to 2017 were enrolled in this study. The sensitivity, specificity, and stone size measured in US were validated by NCCT. Data of the stone size in US were classified into four groups (0-3.5, 3.6-5, 5.1-10, >10 mm) and then compared with NCCT data. RESULTS: In 184 patients, NCCT detected 2

Flexible ureteroscopic lithotripsy for the treatment of upper urinary tract calculi in infants.

We evaluated the clinical value of flexible ureteroscopic lithotripsy for the treatment of upper urinary tract calculi in infants. Fifty-five infants with upper urinary tract calculi were included in this study: 41 males and 14 females. Retrograde intrarenal surgery was performed by an 8 Fr/30 cm flexible ureterorenoscope (POLY®) combined with a holmium laser. CT scanning or radiography of the kidneys, ureters, and bladder region was performed one month after the operation to confirm the clearance of calculi. All the 55 infants with calculi in 74 sides underwent 66 flexible ureteroscopic litho

A new method for computer-assisted detection, definition and differentiation of the urinary calculi.

PURPOSE: Urinary stones are common and can be diagnosed with computed tomography (CT) easily. In this study, we aimed to specify the opacity characteristics of various types of calcified foci that develop through the urinary system by using an image analysis program. With this method, we try to differentiate the calculi from the non-calculous opacities and also we aimed to present how to identify the characteristic features of renal and ureteral calcules. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We obtained the CT studies of the subjects (n = 48, mean age = 41 years) by using a dual source CT imaging system. W
