Fu-brick tea (FBT) is predominately fermented by Eurotium Cristatum, FBT polysaccharides (FTPs) and Eurotium Cristatum extracellular polysaccharides (ECPs) are the main active substances in FBT and Eurotium Cristatum, respectively. The in vivo antifibrotic effect of a fucoidan extract (FE) from Sargassum fluitans Borgesen was evaluated in a carbon tetrachloride-induced liver damage model in rats over twelve weeks. Urinary excretion of glycosaminoglycans was measured in 10 patients with pretibial myxoedema, 7 of whom also had thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy, and in 3 additional patients with ophthalmopathy but no skin changes. Total uronic acid excretion was raised above control levels in only 2 patients, who had both eye and skin disease of recent onset. In this study, a water-soluble polysaccharide (POPw) was successfully purified and identified from the fruiting bodies of Pleurotus ostreatus, with a molecular weight of 2.3×10(4)Da. POPw contained 97.1% total sugar, 0.3% uronic acid and 0.2% protein. Weanling rats were fed diets with and without the addition of retinyl palmitate at 6,500 units/kg. The supplemented groups were fed either ad libitum or food was restricted daily to that amount consumed by the group of rats receiving the unsupplemented diet.
