In vitro accumulation of radioactive para-aminohippuric acid (3H-PAH) and rubidium (86Rb+) by the anterior uvea, ciliary processes, and the choroid plexus was evaluated in tissues from newborn and various aged rabbits. Accumulation of PAH was present in the anterior uvea at 1 day of age (tissue to media ratio, T/M, of 2.1 +/- 0.2) and remained at this level for the first 14 days of life. Epidemiological studies suggest that multiple sclerosis (MS) might be triggered by an infectious agent. Uveitis has been observed in a small percentage of MS patients. Dogs with canine distemper encephalomyelitis, another demyelinating disease of the central nervous system, have an anterior uveitis which is usually mild and asymptomatic, and dogs with persistent CNS infection and chronic distemper encephalomyelitis harbour virus persistently in the uvea. These observations in dogs suggest that pathological and virological studies of the uveitis associated with MS would be worth while.

Endotoxin-induced Uveitis (EIU) was produced in Lewis rats by footpad injection of Salmonella endotoxin. Protein and cells were measured both in the aqueous humor and in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in order to examine if the inflammation was strictly limited to the anterior uvea. Metastatic carcinomata in the anterior uvea are rare. Some of them may be diagnosed before the primary tumor is clinically detected. We report on three such cases. The vast majority of secondaries in the anterior uvea have their primary in the bronchus. It is rather exceptional that a metastasis in the anterior chamber can be traced to an eosophageal carcinoma as in one of our cases.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to investigate the incidence of unexpected malignant uveal melanoma in the age of ultrasound diagnostics and to highlight the reasons for misdiagnosis.

PURPOSE: Neurofibromatosis Type I (NF-1) is a neurocutaneous disease affecting the skin, eye and peripheral nervous system. Congenital glaucoma is a rare association, but can be a prelude to the diagnosis of NF-1 later in life. Transport of timolol and befunolol in the anterior uvea of the albino rabbit was studied in vitro. Also, the mode of timolol elimination from the living eye was investigated. Intranuclear cytoplasmic inclusions have been described previously in both human and animal tissue. So far as we are aware they are described in detail for the first time in this paper in 60 cases of malignant melanoma of the iris, usually in spindle cells. The light microscopic appearances are described, and electron microscopic studies of selected cases show clearly the genesis of these inclusions by cytoplasmic invagination of the nuclear membrane.
