Laser-assisted uvula-palatoplasty (LAUP) is a new and effective surgical method for the elimination of habitual snoring. LAUP is safely performed under local anesthesia in the office, and it provides progressive enlargement of the oropharyngeal air space by reshaping and restructuring the uvula, soft palate, and pharyngeal pillars utilizing the CO2 laser with special attachments. During the past two decades, tuberculosis - both pulmonary and extrapulmonary - has re-emerged as a major health problem worldwide. Nasal tuberculosis - either primary or secondary to pulmonary tuberculosis or facial lupus - is rare, but it should be considered in the differential diagnosis of nasal granulomas. We describe a case of tuberculosis in an adult male who presented with palatal perforation with vanishing uvula and arch deformity of the palate. The diagnosis was based on histopathology and patient's successful response to antituberculous drug treatment.

A case of marginal zone B cell lymphoma of MALT type arising in the uvula and breast is reported. The patient, a 30-year-old woman who delivered a child and lactated in 1997, was suffering from Sjögren syndrome (SS). She was diagnosed with MALT lymphoma after a biopsy of the right breast and uvula. OBJECTIVE: A retrospective study to find out the aetiology, symptomatology and management of elongated and enlarged uvulae.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Examination of files of 375 patients seen in the period 1983-1997.
RESULTS: Trauma constituted a big proportion of patients seen. However, papillomas, solitary infections, allergy, simple symptomatic elongation, squamous cell carcinoma as well as asympomatic elongation were seen. The symptomatology varied between simple irritation in the throat to vomiting, pain and dysphagia.

Alterations in pharyngeal structure and function are considered fundamental in the pathogenesis of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). However, little is known about morphologic features of the pharynx in patients with OSA. We therefore studied the tissue composition of the uvula (midsagittal section) in patients with OSA, using a quantitative, morphometric point-counting technique.
