Incidental Duplicate Vas Deferens Discovered During Inguinal Hernia Repair With Incarcerated Bladder.

Duplication of the vas deferens is a rare congenital anomaly that has been encountered during inguinal hernia repair, orchidopexy, varicocelectomy, vasectomy, and radical prostatectomy. Identification of the duplicated vas deferens is crucial intraoperatively to avoid iatrogenic injury to the structure and the risks that come with failure to correctly distinguish the structure. We report a case of duplicated vas deferens and incarcerated urinary bladder during a laparoscopic converted to open left direct inguinal hernia repair.

[Gene mutations in congenital bilateral absence of the vas deferens: An update].

Congenital bilateral absence of the vas deferens (CBAVD) is a congenital malformation of the male reproductive system and one of the important causes of obstructive azoospermia and male infertility. It is currently recognized that the main cause of CBAVD is the mutation of the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator gene (CFTR). And the mutations of adhesion G protein-coupled receptor G2 (ADGRG2), solute carrier family 9 isoform 3 (SLC9A3) and other genes are also found to be involved in the development and progression of CBAVD. A reasonable CBAVD molecular diagnosis process combin…

A Rare Case of Prostatic Utricle with Crossover Vas Deferens in Children.

Background: A prostatic utricle (PU) is an unusual pathology with most patients being asymptomatic. However, approximately 29% of patients m … xcised laparoscopically. The utricle was identified posterior to the bladder, and insertions of the vas deferens crossover into the utricle were detected by laparoscopy. The post-procedure course was uneventful. Conclusions: Laparoscopic resection of PUs offers a better exposure field, improved wound appearance, complete resection, and reduces the incidence of …

Duplicated vas deferens: A case report and comprehensive review of the literature.

Duplication of vas deferens is a very rare anomaly which two vasa deferentia are found in the spermatic cord. It can be recognised during autopsy or cadaveric dissection and also several surgical procedures which require spermatic cord dissection including inguinal hernia repair, orchiopexy, vasectomy, varicocelectomy, vasectomy reversal and radical prostatectomy. Recognition of the duplicated vas deferens is important to avoid surgical complications such as an unsuccessful vasectomy or transection of the vas. It was reported in only three cadavers and 31 patients since 1959. In this study, we…

Congenital absence of the vas deferens: Cystic fibrosis transmembrane regulatory gene mutations.

Congenital absence of the vas deferens (CAVD) is a rare genetic condition first discovered in the mid-18th century related to mutations in the cystic fibrosis transmembrane regulatory genes. The condition is typically found during work-up of male infertility, and the majority of cases can be diagnosed with complete history and physical examination and pertinent investigations. The condition can be separated into three subcategories, and genetic advances have led to a much better understanding behind the disease, its pathogenesis, and options for treatment. In this review, we discuss the geneti…

Mechanisms of butylidenephthalide for twitch facilitation in electrically stimulated mouse vas deferens.

CONTEXT: The rhizome of Ligusticum chuaxiong Hort. (Umbelliferae) has been used by Chinese for several thousand years. Its main constituent, butylidenephthalide (Bdph), was proved to be active in inhibiting rat uterine contractions induced by prostaglandin F2α and was reported to be a nonspecific antispamodic and a blocker of voltage-dependent Ca2+ channels (VDCCs). OBJECTIVES: The present study investigates the mechanisms of Bdph for twitch facilitation in ICR mouse vas deferens (MVD). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Electrical field stimulation (EFS, supramaximal voltage ranging from 60-90 V, 1 ms,…

Ectopic Vas Deferens Inserting Into Distal Retroiliac Ureter in the Currarino Syndrome.

Vas deferens ectopia is a rare congenital anomaly frequently associated with anorectal abnormalities and hypospadias. We present a Currarino syndrome case with an ectopic vas deferens terminating in a distal retroiliac ureter. A left vasectomy, ureteral decussation over the iliac vessels, and a Cohen's-type ureteral reimplantation were performed. The objectives are to preserve renal function, prevent epididymitis, and preserve fertility. There is no evidence in the literature that recommends surgical correction of the vas deferens. Microsurgical epididymal sperm aspiration or testicular sperm …

Distinct spectrum of CFTR gene mutations in congenital absence of vas deferens.

Congenital absence of the vas deferens (CAVD) is a frequent cause for obstructive azoospermia and accounts for 1%-2% of male infertility. A high incidence of mutations of the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene has recently been reported in males with CAVD. We have investigated a cohort of 106 German patients with congenital bilateral or unilateral absence of the vas deferens for mutations in the coding region, flanking intron regions and promotor sequences of the CFTR gene. Of the CAVD patients, 75% carried CFTR mutations or disease-associated CFTR variants, such a…

Congenital ectopic vas deferens inserting into the bladder with ipsilateral renal agenesis.

Vas deferens ectopia is a rare congenital anomaly which is frequently associated with anorectal abnormalities. There have been 20 cases up to date with an ectopic vas deferens inserting into the ureter. Out of these 6 had a bilateral insertion and another 4 cases with an ectopic vas deferens inserting directly into the bladder, out of which 1 had a bilateral insertion. There is an embryological hypothesis which may explain this rare condition that may result from a possible underlying defect of the proximal vas precursor segment of the Wolffian duct. Herein, we present a case of an ectopic vas…

Interaction between noradrenergic and histamine-containing neurons in the rat vas deferens.

A decussation of histamine (HA)-containing nervous pathways, at the level of the sympathetic ganglionic clusters of the rat vas deferens, was formerly described in this laboratory. This type of neuronal distribution is confirmed in the present study by using surgical interruptions of nervous pathways and determining changes in L-histidine decarboxylase (HD) activity, as an HA-containing neuron marker, after nerve degeneration. Decreases of HD activity follow previously found decreases of HA levels in the vas deferens submitted to the same type of surgical interruptions. An interaction between …

Congenital bilateral absence of vas deferens in the absence of cystic fibrosis.

The high frequency of mutations in the cystic fibrosis gene in patients with congenital bilateral absence of vas deferens (CBAVD) has raised the question whether all of them have a genital form of cystic fibrosis. We investigated 47 CBAVD patients by ultrasonography, 10 (21%) had renal malformations and 37 (79%) did not. In the former group, no cystic fibrosis mutations were found and sweat chloride concentrations were normal. In the latter group, 18 patients (49%) carried at least one cystic fibrosis mutation and sweat chloride was high in 17 of 26 tested (65%). Our findings suggest that CBAV…

Arteriovenous haemangioma of the vas deferens: a case report and literature review.

Arteriovenous haemangioma of the vas deferens is an extremely rare entity in clinical practice. To date, there have been no clinical or pathological cases reported in Medline, Embase or other published English literature. Herein, a 50-year-old male who presented with right scrotal pain for 4 years after vasectomy was admitted to our hospital. One painful nodule was palpable in the right scrotum on physical examination. Color Doppler ultrasound merely showed dilation of the epididymis and no additional information concerning the painful nodule in the right scrotum. Moreover, the laboratory test…

Luminal fluid of epididymis and vas deferens contributes to sperm chromatin fragmentation.

STUDY QUESTION: Do the luminal fluids of the epididymis and the vas deferens contribute to sperm chromatin fragmentation (SCF) in mice? SUMMARY ANSWER: The luminal fluids of both organs are required for activating SCF in mice, but the vas deferens luminal fluid does this more efficiently than that of the epididymis. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Mice sperm have the ability to degrade their DNA in an apoptotic-like fashion when treated with divalent cations in a process termed SCF. SCF has two steps: the induction of reversible double-strand DNA breaks at the nuclear matrix attachment sites, followe…

Histopathological alterations of the vas deferens in rats exposed to polypropylene mesh.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the histological and physiological effects of polypropylene mesh for inguinal herniorraphy, as it can cause lesions in the vas deferens in 0.3-2.0%, leading to infertility, and induces an inflammatory process and adjacent fibrosis, strengthening the posterior inguinal wall. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In all, 40 male albino rats (3 months old) had bilateral vas deferens dissection followed by mesh implantation on one side; the contralateral side was used as the control. The rats were killed 90 (group 1) and 120 (group 2) days later, and the vas deferens, epididymides and testi…

The effects of varicocele and its surgical correction on vas deferens motility.

Varicocele is the abnormal dilation of venous pampiniform plexus and internal spermatic vein. Its prevalence in the adolescent period is alm … ot be blamed as the one and only reason of infertility. One major reason of the male infertility is vas deferens motility disorders. There is limited data in the literature investigating the effects of varicocele on the vas deferens motility. Airway inflammation and infection in congenital bilateral absence of the vas deferens.

In cystic fibrosis (CF), airway disease begins early in life. Bacteria and elevated levels of neutrophils and inflammatory mediators have been detected in bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid from infants with CF. Mutations in the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) are common in men with congenital bilateral absence of the vas deferens (CBAVD) and it has been suggested that this syndrome represents a mild form of CF. We hypothesized that men with CBAVD also have subclinical pulmonary disease. Bronchoscopy with BAL, viral and quantitative bacterial cultures, and analyses o…
