Infection of eight mesocarnivores in New Hampshire and Vermont with a distinct clade of canine distemper virus in 2016-2017.

Three fishers (Martes pennanti), 2 gray foxes (Urocyon cinereoargenteus), 1 mink (Neovison vison), 1 skunk (Mephitis mephitis), and 1 raccoon (Procyon lotor), from Vermont and New Hampshire, had lesions on autopsy consistent with canine distemper virus (CDV) infections diagnosed in a 12-mo period in 2016-2017. Lesions of CDV infection were most commonly noted in the lungs (8 of 8 animals), urothelium (5 of 8), biliary tract (5 of 8), gastrointestinal tract (4 of 7), and brain (4 of 6). Splenic lesions were seen in 3 animals. The diagnosis was confirmed via immunohistochemistry and virus isolat…

Hind limb malformations in free-living northern leopard frogs (Rana pipiens) from Maine, Minnesota, and Vermont suggest multiple etiologies.

BACKGROUND: Reports of malformed frogs have increased throughout the North American continent in recent years. Most of the observed malformations have involved the hind limbs. The goal of this study was to accurately characterize the hind limb malformations in wild frogs as an important step toward understanding the possible etiologies. METHODS: During 1997 and 1998, 182 recently metamorphosed northern leopard frogs (Rana pipiens) were collected from Minnesota, Vermont, and Maine. Malformed hind limbs were present in 157 (86%) of these frogs, which underwent necropsy and radiographic evaluati…

Oral Rabies Vaccination of Raccoons (Procyon lotor) across a Development Intensity Gradient in Burlington, Vermont, USA, 2015-2017.

Management of the raccoon rabies virus variant in North America is conducted primarily using oral rabies vaccination (ORV). When a sufficient proportion of the population is vaccinated (∼60%), rabies transmission can be eliminated. To date, ORV programs have successfully controlled and eliminated raccoon rabies in rural areas, but there has been less success in urban areas. We studied the proportions of rabies virus neutralizing antibodies (RVNA) in a raccoon (Procyon lotor) population during a 3-yr ORV trial in developed areas of Burlington, Vermont, US. We used a modified N-mixture model to …

Bias in the Listeria monocytogenes enrichment procedure: lineage 2 strains outcompete lineage 1 strains in University of Vermont selective enrichments.

Listeria monocytogenes can be isolated from a range of food products and may cause food-borne outbreaks or sporadic cases of listeriosis. L. … brain heart infusion (BHI), but differed in their growth rate in the selective medium University of Vermont medium I (UVM I). When coinoculated in UVM I, some strains completely outgrew other strains. This outcome was dependent on the lineage of L. monocytogenes rather than the individual growth rate of the strains. When inoculated at identical cell densi …

Venous thromboembolism prevention in ambulatory oncology: A multi-method evaluation of the Vermont Model to inform adaptation to an oncology-delivered model.

BACKGROUND: Despite evidence-based guidelines, venous thromboembolism (VTE) prevention in ambulatory cancer remains low. The "Vermont Model" is a multidisciplinary program wherein oncology nurses conduct VTE risk assessment, VTE patient-education to all patients starting anti-cancer therapy and refer high risk patients to thrombosis specialist to discuss thromboprophylaxis. The Vermont Model successfully improved targeted anticoagulation prophylaxis for high-risk patients, but efforts to reproduce the model in community oncology practices were less successful. The objective of this study was t…

Cost Implications for Subsequent Perinatal Outcomes After IVF Stratified by Number of Embryos Transferred: A Five Year Analysis of Vermont Data.

BACKGROUND: In states in the USA without in vitro fertilzation coverage (IVF) insurance coverage, more embryos are transferred per cycle leading to higher risks of multi-fetal pregnancies and adverse pregnancy outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To determine frequency and cost of selected adverse perinatal complications based on number of embryos transferred during IVF, and calculate incremental cost per IVF live birth. METHODS: Medical records of patients who conceived with IVF (n = 116) and delivered at >20 weeks gestational age between 2007 and 2011 were evaluated. Gestational age at delivery, low birth

Perceived Supports and Barriers to Optimal Nutrition and Physical Activity in a Cohort of Vermont Older Adults: A Convergent Parallel Mixed-Methods Study.

The purpose of this study was to identify supports and barriers that impacted nutrition status and physical activity in Vermont's older adults before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Using a convergent parallel mixed-methods design guided by the socio-ecological model, older Vermonters participated in surveys and focus groups. Quantitative and qualitative strands were analyzed separately and merged during final analysis. Data from 52 participants (70 years + 6.2; 75% female) indicate 31% at risk for falls and malnutrition and 14% food insecure. Thematic analysis revealed Vermont has many food…

The Density of the Lyme Disease Vector, Ixodes scapularis (Blacklegged Tick), Differs Between the Champlain Valley and Green Mountains, Vermont.

Lyme disease is an emerging infectious disease of public health concern in the northeastern United States. The disease's vector, Ixodes scapularis (Say) (Blacklegged Tick), has increased its range in the past twenty years. In its newly endemic northern range there have been few studies of the Blacklegged Tick's habitat associations. From 2016-2018, we sampled for nymphal Blacklegged Ticks in the Champlain Valley and Green Mountains of Addison County, Vermont, and tested them for Borrelia burgdorferi, the Lyme disease agent. We found 10 times more ticks in the Champlain Valley than in the Green…

Assessment of mercury in waters, sediments, and biota of New Hampshire and Vermont Lakes, USA, sampled using a geographically randomized design.

We report on mercury (Hg) contamination in waters, sediments, and biota of Vermont and New Hampshire (USA) lakes measured during 1998-2000, using a geographically randomized design. Waters and sediments of 92 lakes were sampled for mercury, methylmercury, and ancillary parameters. Yellow perch (Perca flavescens) muscle tissues were analyzed for mercury on 47 of these lakes. Interannual variation in mercury was limited; only epilimnetic Hg was elevated by approximately 1.5 ng/L in 1998 over remaining years because of wet weather. Aqueous total and methylmercury concentrations were elevated in b…
