Percutaneous vertebroplasty is an emerging interventional technique in which surgical polymethylmethacrylate is injected via a large bore needle into a vertebral body under imaging guidance. This technique provides increased strength and pain relief in vertebrae weakened by a variety of bone diseases. The current indication for vertebroplasty is intractable non-radicular pain caused by compression fractures due to osteoporosis, myeloma, metastases and aggressive vertebral haemangioma. Contraindications include bleeding disorder, unstable fracture and lack of definable vertebral collapse. Our t…

BACKGROUND: Osteoporotic thoracolumbar vertebral fractures are frequently accompanied by referred pain. Although percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP) effectively alleviates local pain, its efficacy for referred pain remains limited. Pregabalin reduces neural sensitization and may enhance analgesic outcomes. This study aimed to investigate the effect of combining PVP with pregabalin on referred pain.
METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, 108 patients were allocated to either a combination therapy group (PVP plus pregabalin, n = 55) or a PVP-alone group (n = 53). The Visual Analog Scale (VA…

AIMS: To assess the adequacy of intraoperative scrape cytology during percutaneous vertebroplasty by correlating results with corresponding histopathology.
SETTINGS AND DESIGN: Vertebroplasty is a procedure increasingly used to treat painful vertebral compression fractures. The history and presentation of osteoporotic fractures are straightforward, but difficulty arises in differentiating infective from neoplastic lesions, especially in cases where the magnetic resonance imaging is equivocal. The procedure involves injection of polymethyl methacrylate (bone cement) into the pathological verte…

Vertebroplasty of the axis is a challenging procedure, and little is known about its therapeutic outcome. Cervical fibrous dysplasia with a distinct cyst is a rare entity and few cases have been reported in the literature. A 55-year-old man with fibrous dysplasia of axis presented with severe neck pain and left arm since six months. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed an expansile, destructive lesion involving the axis, and no spinal cord. He was submitted to retropharyngeal surgery and the lesion was fulled by vertebroplasty. Microscopic examination was consistent with…

BACKGROUND: Debilitating backache due to different types of vertebral lesions is a common cause of morbidity in all age groups. Percutaneous vertebroplasty (PV) gives substantial pain relief and stabilizes the weak vertebrae. Most of the information regarding PV comes from the Western literature. The effect of PV in our population should be studied.
AIMS: The primary objective is to assess the therapeutic benefit of PV in alleviating back pain and improving the functional status in patients with painful pathologic vertebrae. The secondary objectives are to study the technical aspects of the p…

Percutaneous vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty have during the last decade gained an increasing popularity in the treatment of osteoporotic fractures of the spine. The techniques, clinical results and complications are described. There is however a disturbing lack of scientific evidence regarding the efficacy of the procedures, no controlled studies are published. An ongoing prospective randomised study is presented.

A prospective study of 31 percutaneous vertebroplasty procedures (PVP) in 22 patients treated during January 2000 to December 2001 is presented. PVP was performed using polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) to treat vertebral collapse due to osteoporosis and vertebral metastasis, to obtain analgesia and spinal stabilization. We analyze the efficacy and complications related to the procedure. PVP is a safe, effective and a daycare surgery. It can be performed under local anesthesia and has minimal and manageable complications.

BACKGROUND: As the most frequent bone metastasis, spinal metastases cause severe pain and damage to vertebral bodies such as spinal osteolytic destruction and compression fractures. To avoid the trauma and complications of open surgery, a minimally invasive procedure, percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP), has recently been developed to treat metastatic spinal tumors.
PURPOSE: To analyze the treatment outcomes of metastatic spinal tumors by percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP) alone or PVP combined with interstitial implantation of 125I seeds.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: 80 patients with metastatic spina…

Percutaneous vertebroplasty is a minimally invasive treatment technique for vertebral body compression fractures. The complications associated with this technique can be categorized into mild, moderate, and severe. Among these, the most prevalent complication is cement leakage, which may insert into the epidural, intradiscal, foraminal, and paravertebral regions, and even the venous system. The occurrence of a postprocedural infection carries a notable risk which is inherent to any percutaneous procedure. While the majority of these complications manifest without symptoms, they can potentially…
