BACKGROUND: Vestibular schwannoma (VS) arises from either the superior or the inferior vestibular nerve and causes vestibular dysfunction to various degrees. Recently, ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potentials to bone-conducted vibration (oVEMPs to BCV) have attracted much interest as a new clinical test for otolith-ocular pathway function. Because it is unclear whether the oVEMPs to BCV primarily originate from activation of the superior or the inferior vestibular nerve, the results in patients with VS might enlighten us concerning the origin of oVEMPs to BCV.

PURPOSE: To understand if visual function tests with moving stimuli were harder to process and caused more symptom provocation in persistent postural perceptual dizziness (PPPD) patients compared with those with other vestibular diagnoses or without any vestibular symptoms.
METHODS: 61 patients aged 8-23 years participated in a prospective study with three groups: PPPD (n = 21); at least one vestibular disorder without PPPD (n = 20); control-without vestibular or vision symptoms (n = 20). Subjects underwent visual function tests with moving stimuli: near point of convergence (NPC), amplitude

OBJECTIVES: To analyze vestibular function Q2 (VF) after cochlear implantation (CI) in children.
METHODS: Retrospective cohort study at a tertiary pediatric referral center. 43 children that had vestibular testing (VT) after unilateral cochlear implantation, from 2001 to 2010, were included. CT scan of the temporal bone was done systematically before surgery. VT included three tests: head-impulse test, caloric tests, vestibular evoked myogenic potentials. VF was graded in: normal (type 1), partial dysfunction (type 2), severe dysfunction and areflexia (type 3). In 12 cases, VT was done before

The skull vibration-induced nystagmus test is a robust, nonintrusive and easy to perform test. This test acts as a vestibular Weber test and is performed as a bedside examination. It usually instantaneously reveals vibration-induced nystagmus (VIN) even in long standing or chronic compensated unilateral vestibular lesions. The test requires stimulation at 30, 60 or more efficiently at 100Hz. The vibrator is applied perpendicularly to the skin on a subject sitting up straight on the right and then the left mastoid (level with external acoustic meatus) and vertex. The VIN can be observed under v

In summary, patients with BPPV can be treated with the canalith repositioning maneuver. Patients with unilateral vestibular hypofunction can be treated using adaptation, substitution, and/or habituation exercises. Patients with motion sensitivity can demonstrate improved tolerance to motion after performing habituation exercises. Patients with bilateral vestibular loss will benefit from substitution and adaptation exercises. Each patient requires a treatment regime that is individualized and appropriate to address their impairments. Often the treatment is determined through the evaluation proc

Computerized dynamic posturography uses a force platform that can both translate and rotate. When combined with visual stimuli, it can be used to determine the relative importance of the various sensory inputs critical for balance, namely vision, somatosensation, and vestibular sensation. Studies to date have shown several patterns of abnormalities on posturography, the best recognized being the vestibular pattern. Many patients with a high suspicion of having a peripheral vestibular abnormality (based on other information) have such a pattern. Moreover, few normal subjects have such abnormali

Vestibular schwannomas (VS) are benign tumors of the vestibular nerve. The common first symptoms are hearing loss and tinnitus, followed by imbalance, vertigo, and facial nerve involvement. The subjective symptoms of VS patients are not consistent with the severity of vestibular lesions and the results of vestibular tests, which often interfere with clinicians' diagnoses. Thus, the main screening and diagnostic methods for VS are audiometry and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), ignoring the evaluation of vestibular function at the source of pathological lesions. With the development and improv

Bilateral vestibular dysfunction (BVD) refers to hypofunction of the vestibular nerves or labyrinths on both sides. Patients with BVD present with dizziness, oscillopsia, and unsteadiness, mostly during locomotion, which worsen in darkness or on uneven ground. Although aminoglycoside ototoxicity, Meniere's disease, infection, and genetic disorders frequently cause BVD, the etiology remains undetermined in up to 50% of the patients. The diagnosis of BVD requires both symptoms and documentation of deficient vestibulo-ocular reflex function using head-impulse, bithermal caloric, and rotatory chai

PURPOSE: In the fields of both vestibular and auditory research, reliable vestibular function tests are essential. However, unlike the auditory function tests, which use standard Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) equipment, there is no equivalent widely adopted apparatus for vestibular tests. Vestibulo-ocular reflexes (VORs) are the compensatory ocular reflexes that ensure stable vision during head motion. VORs are widely used in clinics to diagnose vestibular deficits. In the research, VORs have been used by various groups to evaluate the mouse vestibular function. However, the effectiveness …

OBJECTIVE: To examine the findings and impact of postmeningitis vestibular dysfunction on early posturomotor development. Meningitis in children is frequently associated with postural instability, which is often attributed to an undefined neurologic disorder but it could actually be due to vestibular impairment.
STUDY DESIGN: In a retrospective cohort study, we compared groups with vestibular loss before versus after independent walking: 37 children (18 girls, 19 boys; median age: 2.3 years) hospitalized for bacterial meningitis and referred for postural instability. A complete vestibular eva

OBJECTIVES: While hearing loss is a known late effect of childhood cancer treatment, the impact of childhood cancer treatment on vestibular function has not been comprehensively explored. Vestibular impairment is associated with delayed gross motor development and impaired balance, and thus is important to measure in children. Few studies have examined peripheral vestibular end organ function in this population, and relationships between vestibular and audiometric function in children with cancer are limited. The purpose of this study was to (1) determine if tests of peripheral vestibular func

Two technically simple tests, vestibular evoked myogenic potential (VEMP) and subjective visual vertical/horizontal (SVV/H) test, have the potential to transform otolith function testing from the research laboratory to the outpatient clinic. Cervical- and ocular-VEMPs are short latency surface potentials produced through the activation of saccular and utricular afferents by sound and vibration. They are tests of dynamic otolith function. The SVV/H test in peripheral lesions probes static asymmetries in utricular function and represents a perceptual error in perceived gravitational vertical/hor

Quantitative tests of vestibular function include the caloric test, cervical and ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potential (VEMP), rotary chair, and head impulse test, either at the bedside or utilizing video head impulse test (vHIT). The purpose of this article is to provide an overview of how to perform these tests in children, including which tests are recommended based on the child's age and any modifications or considerations that can be made. A variety of clinical measures have been recommended as screening measures for vestibular loss, which will be reviewed. Symptom questionnaires de
