Comparative evaluation of underlying causes of death processed by the Automated Classification of Medical Entities and the Underlying Cause of Death Selection Systems.

INTRODUCTION: The correct identification of the underlying cause of death and its precise assignment to a code from the International Classification of Diseases are important issues to achieve accurate and universally comparable mortality statistics. These factors, among other ones, led to the development of computer software programs in order to automatically identify the underlying cause of death. OBJECTIVE: This work was conceived to compare the underlying causes of death processed respectively by the Automated Classification of Medical Entities (ACME) and the "Sistema de Seleção de Causa

[Francisco Gavaldá, ahead of his time in the social statistics study of bubonic plague (1679)].

In 1651, Francisco Gavaldá (1618-1686) authored the first social statistics study on the bubonic plague which scourged western Europe in the mid-seventeenth century. specifically the plague having racked Valencia in 1647. Gavaldá was, in fact the first to study the plague not only statistically, but also from a social standpoint, denouncing the fact that it especially affected the poor, totally independently of the interests of the powerful.

Preliminary data on births and deaths--United States, 1995.

Timely and accurate health data are essential to public health surveillance efforts for monitoring trends in vital events, diseases, injuries, and disabilities. More timely release of accurate vital statistics has been identified as a priority by health agencies at the federal, state, and local levels and in academia and the private sector. In response to the need for faster release of high-quality data, CDC's National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), in collaboration with state vital statistics offices, has initiated a new system to speed the transmission of vital statistics from states t…

Methodological issues in the surveillance of poisoning, illicit drug overdose, and heroin overdose deaths in new Mexico.

New Mexico leads the nation in poisoning mortality, which has increased during the 1990s in New Mexico and the United States. Most of this increase has been due to unintentional deaths from illicit drug overdoses. Medical examiner and/or vital statistics data have been used to track poisoning deaths. In this study, the authors linked medical examiner and vital statistics records on underlying cause of death, coded using the International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, to assess the extent to which these data sources agreed with respect to poisoning deaths. The authors used multipl…

Under-5 mortality surveillance in low-income and middle-income countries: insights from two Health and Demographic Surveillance Systems in rural Gambia.

Without complete data on under-5 mortality, tracking progress towards achieving Sustainable Development Goal 3.2 will be challenging. Such data are also needed to ensure proper planning and prioritisation of scarce resources in low-income and middle-income countries. However, most low-income and middle-income countries have weak Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) systems, leaving a critical gap in understanding under-5 mortality dynamics. This paper outlines a community-based approach to enhance under-5 mortality surveillance in low-income countries, using The Gambia as a case stud…

The University of California Study of Outcomes in Mothers and Infants (a Population-Based Research Resource): Retrospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Population-based databases are valuable for perinatal research. The California Department of Health Care Access and Information … and linked record selection is made based on a "link score." The complete file includes California Vital Statistics and HCAI hospital discharge records for the birthing person (1 y before delivery and 1 y after delivery) and infant (1 y after delivery). Linkage quality was assessed through a comparison of linked files and California Vital Statistics only. Compari …

The effect of an increase in the rate of multiple births on low-birth-weight and preterm deliveries during 1975-2008.

BACKGROUND: Despite the rapid increase in the rate of multiple births due to the growth of reproductive medicine, there have been no epidemiologic studies of the secular trends in the impact of multiple births on the rates of low-birth-weight and preterm deliveries in Japan. METHODS: Japanese vital statistics for multiple live births were obtained from the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare and reanalyzed. With singletons as the reference group, an analysis was performed of secular trends in relative risk and population attributable risk percent of low-birth-weight (<2500 grams), very-low…

Differences in Cancer Mortality Rate Depending on Occupational Class among Japanese Women, 1995-2015.

BACKGROUND: Although it is known that cancer mortality rate varies depending on occupations in Japan, differences in female cancer mortality rate depending on occupational classes have not been analyzed using the Vital Statistics in Japan. In this study, we analyzed the Vital Statistics data in Japan from 1995 to 2015, and revealed differences in cancer mortality rate depending on occupational classes among Japanese women. METHODS: The Vital Statistics data by occupations from 1995 to 2015 were obtained from the "Report of Vital Statistics : Occupational and Industrial Aspects" in Japan, and …
