Eleven patients with vitiligo were treated with clofazimine, for a period of 3 months. There was no evidence of repigmentation of the affected areas in any of the patients treated. Exposure, to sunlight in addition, did not improve the response.

Vitiligo is a skin condition that causes loss of pigmentation, resulting in hypopigmented and depigmented patches on the skin. Vitiligo has been associated with many autoimmune conditions. A 27-year-old female with a history of vitiligo had a clinical presentation and laboratory studies that were consistent with incipient hypothyroidism. The relationship between vitiligo, hypothyroidism, and other autoimmune conditions is discussed.

Patients with vitiligo have circulating antibodies to melanocytes. To identify vitiligo antibodies and characterize the antigens by vitiligo antibodies, sera of 18 patients with vitiligo, 18 with Behcet's disease, 22 with syphilis and 14 normal control subjects were analyzed by indirect immunofluorescence, live cell ELISA, and immunoblotting.
