Temporal and spatial variability of trace volatile organic compounds in rainwater.

This study presents the first detailed concentration profile of trace VOCs in atmospheric waters. Analytes were detected and quantified in 111 unique rain events in Wilmington, NC, USA over a one-year period. Headspace solid phase microextraction was optimized for detection of these compounds at sub-nanomolar levels. Distinct seasonality in both the occurrence and concentration of compounds was observed with the lowest abundance occurring during low irradiance winter months. In contrast to other rainwater components studied at this location, VOCs did not show any correlation between rainfall a

Hierarchical nanostructured WO3-SnO2 for selective sensing of volatile organic compounds.

It remains a challenge to find a suitable gas sensing material that shows a high response and shows selectivity towards various gases simultaneously. Here, we report a mixed metal oxide WO3-SnO2 nanostructured material synthesized in situ by a simple, single-step, one-pot hydrothermal method at 200 °C in 12 h, and demonstrate its superior sensing behavior towards volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as ammonia, ethanol and acetone. SnO2 nanoparticles with controlled size and density were uniformly grown on WO3 nanoplates by varying the tin precursor. The density of the SnO2 nanoparticles on …

Sources and migration of volatile organic compounds in mixed-use buildings.

UNLABELLED: We examined concentrations and migration of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in ten mixed-use buildings in southeast Michigan, USA. In an office and work zone in each building, air exchange rates (AERs) were measured using perfluorocarbon tracers, and over 96 VOC species were measured by GC/MS over a 7-day period. VOCs were then apportioned to sources in offices, work zones, and outdoors using a two-zone mass balance model. AERs averaged 3.9 h (0.2-14.2 h) in offices and 1.9 h (0.4-3.5 h) in work zones. The dominant VOCs included aromatics, terpenes and alkanes. VOC concentrations…

Visual Recognition of Volatile Organic Compounds by Photonic Nose Integrated with Multiple Metal-Organic Frameworks.

The photonic nose inspired by the olfactory system is an integrated detection platform constructed by multiple sensing units as channels. However, in the detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), the sensing results that cannot be directly readable and the poor ability to distinguish analytes with similar chemical properties are the main challenges faced by this sensor. Here, 8 metal-organic frameworks (MOF)-based photonic crystals are used as the basic sensing units to construct a photonic nose detection platform. The microscopic adsorption of VOCs by MOFs enables the photonic crystals …

Mobile Sampling System to Resolve Firefighter Team Exposures to Volatile Organic Compounds.

Carcinogenic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from wildfires and wildland urban interface (WUI) fires pose significant health risks to firefighters. Yet, limited information is known about the specific chemical composition of smoke exposure which is needed to develop targeted cancer prevention protocols. Critically, current methods to monitor firefighters' exposure to these hazardous VOCs are lacking. To address this gap, we developed an automated portable air sampling device capable of identifying and quantifying firefighters' exposure to toxic VOCs over a 24-hour work period. The device can…

Stability of volatile organic compounds in thermal desorption tubes and in solution.

Exhaled breath volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are often collected and stored in sorbent tubes before thermal desorption-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (TD-GC-MS) analysis. Information about the stability of VOCs during storage is needed to account for potential artifacts and monitor for losses. Additionally, information about the stability of VOC standards in solution is required to assess their performance as quality control and internal standards. We evaluated the stability of a standard mixture of 42 VOCs in dual-sorbent tubes containing Tenax® TA and Carbotrap 1TD over 60 d at com…
