Suboptimal Bacteriological Quality of Household Water in Municipal Ibadan, Nigeria.

Access to potable water is difficult for many African residents. This study evaluated the bacteriological quality of household water collected in the dry and wet seasons across five municipal local government areas (LGAs) in Ibadan, a large city in southwest Nigeria. A total of 447 water samples (dry season, n = 250; wet season, n = 197) were aseptically collected from a random sample of mapped households within Ibadan's five municipal LGAs. The pH values and total aerobic and coliform bacterial counts were measured, and samples were screened for Escherichia coli, Salmonella, Shigella, and Yer

WRO-water: A hydrology-guided multi-head attention transformer for runoff prediction and water quality early warning.

Predicting runoff and providing water quality early warnings becomes critical for timely monitoring of water resources. In particular, it needs to be robust under varying rainfall conditions, sensor noise and catchment conditions. We propose WRO-Water system, a hydrology-guided multi-head attention Transformer with mass-balance regularization for runoff forecasting, water quality prediction and anomaly-based early warning. The hydrology-guided attention is different from the default Transformer, which only uses content-based self-attention, by making the temporal attention scores dependent on …

Two-year Monitoring of Microbiological Water Quality in Small Water Supply Systems: Implications for Microbial Risk Management.

Small water supply systems (SWSSs) are often more vulnerable to waterborne disease outbreaks. In Japan, many SWSSs operate without regulation under the Waterworks Law, yet there is limited investigation into microbial contamination and the associated health risks. In this study, the microbiological water quality of four SWSSs that utilize mountain streams as water sources and do not install water treatment facilities were monitored for over 2 years. In investigated SWSSs, the mean heterotrophic plate counts were below 350 CFU/mL, and the total bacterial loads (16S rDNA concentration) ranged fr…

A multivariate Bayesian network analysis of water quality factors influencing trihalomethanes formation in drinking water distribution systems.

Controlling disinfection by-products formation while ensuring effective drinking water disinfection is important for protecting public health. However, understanding and predicting disinfection by-product formation under a variety of conditions in drinking water distribution systems remains challenging as disinfection by-product formation is a multifactorial phenomenon. This study aimed to assess the application of Bayesian Network models to predict the concentration of trihalomethanes, the dominant halogenated disinfection by-product class, using various water quality parameters. Naïve Bayesi…

Influence of pre- and post-usage flushing frequencies on bacterial water quality of non-touch water fittings.

BACKGROUND: Non-touch fittings have been reported to be susceptible for Pseudomonas aeruginosa accumulation. A number of factors may contribute to this, including the frequency of usage, duration of water stagnation, or presence of plastic materials. Programmable non-touch fittings are appearing which allow regular automated post-flushing with cold water to prevent water stagnation. However, the ideal duration of post-flushing is unknown as well as the effect of pre-rinsing with cold water before use. METHODS: Eight non-touch fittings with brass valve blocks were mounted on a mobile test sink

"Quality teaches you how to use water. It doesn't provide a water pump": a qualitative study of context and mechanisms of action in an Ethiopian quality improvement program.

BACKGROUND: Quality improvement collaboratives are a common approach to bridging the quality-of-care gap, but little is known about implementation in low-income settings. Implementers rarely consider mechanisms of change or the role of context, which may explain collaboratives' varied impacts. METHODS: To understand mechanisms and contextual influences we conducted 55 in-depth interviews with staff from four health centres and two hospitals involved in quality improvement collaboratives in Ethiopia. We also generated control charts for selected indicators to explore any impacts of the collabo

Detection of Human Adenovirus, Rotavirus, and Enterovirus in Tap Water and Their Association with the Overall Quality of Water in Karachi, Pakistan.

Drinking water supplies in the developing world often serve as a biosphere for various organisms. Viral gastroenteritis is a neglected area of research in Pakistan, there are no data for the prevalence of enteric viruses in drinking water of the largest city of Karachi. The present study aimed to provide a survey of the existence of enteric viruses: human adenovirus (HAdV), human enteroviruses (hEV), and genotype A rotavirus (GARV) in tap water. Using a simple PCR approach, we detected 20%, 43%, and 23% of HAdV, hEV, and GARV in tap water samples, respectively. We have also shown an overall qu

Impacts on water quality before and after water line cleaning and disinfection with peracetic acid in swine farms.

While it is well recognized that maintaining good water quality is a cornerstone of swine husbandry, research on its role in swine health, performance, and management remains limited. This study evaluated the impacts on water quality after a 0.78% peracetic acid administration in water lines for 24 h between groups of pigs to remove water line mineral scale and biofilm. A secondary objective of the study was to evaluate if there were water quality differences between the water sample location (well source vs. rooms). Six, wean-to-finish swine farms in Iowa sourcing water from on-site wells wer…

Moving beyond classical markers of water quality: detection of enteric viruses and genotoxicity in water of the Sinos River.

It is well recognized that the classical biological and chemical markers of environmental pollution do not necessarily indicate the presence or absence of emerging threats to public health, such as waterborne viruses and genotoxicants. The purpose of this preliminary study was to evaluate the presence of material of enteroviruses (EV), rotavirus (RV) and adenovirus (AdV) and genotoxicity in water samples from points of routine monitoring of water quality in the main course of the Sinos River. The points are classified into different levels of pollution in accordance to the Brazilian federal re…

Water quality as an economic barrier to photocatalytic green hydrogen production.

Photocatalytic water splitting has emerged as a promising technology for sustainable green hydrogen production because it directly converts solar energy into chemical energy under mild operating conditions. Although extensive research has focused on developing highly efficient photocatalysts, cocatalysts, and charge-transfer strategies, the influence of water quality on photocatalytic hydrogen production remains comparatively underexplored. In practical applications, hydrogen generation is expected to utilize a wide range of water resources, including freshwater, groundwater, seawater, municip…

Intersection of Wildfire and Legacy Mining Poses Risks to Water Quality.

Mining and wildfires are both landscape disturbances that pose elevated and substantial hazards to water supplies and ecosystems due to increased erosion and transport of sediment, metals, and debris to downstream waters. The risk to water supplies may be amplified when these disturbances occur in the same watershed. This work describes mechanisms by which the intersection of mining and wildfire may lead to elevated metal concentrations in downstream waters: (1) conveyance of metal-rich ash and soil to surface waters, (2) increased dissolution and transport of dissolved metals due to direct co

A Review of Nanocomposite-Modified Electrochemical Sensors for Water Quality Monitoring.

Electrochemical sensors play a significant role in detecting chemical ions, molecules, and pathogens in water and other applications. These sensors are sensitive, portable, fast, inexpensive, and suitable for online and in-situ measurements compared to other methods. They can provide the detection for any compound that can undergo certain transformations within a potential window. It enables applications in multiple ion detection, mainly since these sensors are primarily non-specific. In this paper, we provide a survey of electrochemical sensors for the detection of water contaminants, i.e., p
