[Evaluating the simulation of memory problems within the legal and forensic fields].

The present article is a theoretic review of the techniques used to assess the malingering of memory problems in the forensic and legal cont … syndrome. This review is focus on, both tests assessing different components of memory, such as the Wechsler Memory Scale III and the California Verbal Learning Test, and tests designed specifically to detect malingering. We also differentiate tests assessing explicit and implicit memory. Likewise, future lines of research are proposed in this important legal context.

Determining meaningful neuropsychological changes following epilepsy surgery for Chinese-speaking patients in Taiwan.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to develop reliable change index (RCI) and standardized regression-based (SRB) change scores for Chinese versions of the neuropsychological tests to provide an empirical standard for evaluating meaningful cognitive changes after epilepsy surgery for patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). METHODS: Thirty-one non-operated patients with TLE were assessed twice (6-month interval) by using the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-III (WAIS-III) and the subtests of the Wechsler Memory Scale-III (WMS-III) to compute RCI with the correction of practice effect and SRB equat…

Procedural and declarative memory processes: individuals with and without mental retardation.

Learning and retention of procedural versus declarative memory tasks were examined with 26 young adults with mild mental retardation and 27 school children matched for MA. Results revealed a similar pattern of task performance. Performance of the young adults with mild mental retardation was inferior to that of the control subjects on both types of tasks. However, learning rate and retention over time were comparable, thereby maintaining the control group's consistent advantage throughout all repeated trials. These results are consistent with previous findings for individual's with mental reta

Predictors of neuropsychological late effects and white matter correlates in children treated for a brain tumor without radiation therapy.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about cognition and predictors of neuropsychological outcomes in pediatric low-grade glioma (PLGG) survivors treated without radiation therapy. This research expands upon our previous work by further identifying the cognitive profile of PLGG patients treated without radiation therapy, investigating the specific medical and demographic variables that predict functioning, and examining white matter structure and its relationship to neuropsychological performance. PROCEDURE: Nineteen PLGG patients (11-19 years) were administered the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Chi

Effect of Early Surgical Intervention for Brain Tumors Associated with Epilepsy on the Improvement in Memory Performance.

We evaluated the effect of early surgical intervention on the change in memory performance of patients with low-grade brain tumors associated with epilepsy. Twenty-three adult patients with low-grade brain tumors and epilepsy who underwent surgery at our institution between 2010 and 2019 were included. The Wechsler Memory Scale-Revised (WMS-R) was used to assess cognitive memory performance. Memory performance before and after surgery was retrospectively evaluated. In addition, the relationships among preoperative memory function, postoperative seizure outcome, preoperative seizure control, te…

Single and combined effects of prenatal exposure to air pollutants on children's cognitive performance.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal air pollution exposure has been increasingly recognised for its impact on children's cognitive development and overall health. This study explored the association between prenatal exposure to air pollutants and cognitive performance in two age groups of children, also assessing combined pollutants and identifying sensitive prenatal exposure windows. METHODS: A total of 781 children were included: 295 preschool-aged (4-5 years) and 486 school-aged (10-11 years), recruited from the EPINED epidemiological project in Tarragona, Spain. Cognitive performance was assessed using

Neural correlates of memory in depression measured by brain perfusion SPECT at rest.

AIM: Brain metabolism activated studies have indicated associations between memory and the anterior cingulate cortex and hippocampus in patients with depression. The aim of the present study was therefore to investigate memory function, measured as performance on the Wechsler Memory Scale-Revised (WMS-R), and its relationship to brain perfusion using single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) at rest in patients with depression. METHODS: The Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HAMD) and WMS-R were measured for 17 patients with depression by an independent clinical evaluation team. V…

On a practitioner's need of further development of Wechsler scales. Adaptive Intelligence Diagnosticum (AID 2).

Wechsler's intelligence test-batteries are still popular yet suffer from psychometric shortcomings and lack a certain content improvement and enlargement. In this paper a new approach will be presented that suits traditional Wechsler-testing. The approach in question is the Adaptive Intelligence Diagnosticum (AID 2; Kubinger & Wurst, 2000). Due to it's "branched testing" design, AID 2 works out to be more economical and in this regard also offers other advantages, such as parallel tests and short forms. AID 2 offers a method of survey for identifying specific developmental disorders or learnin

Working memory in children with reading disabilities and/or mathematical disabilities.

Elementary school children with reading disabilities (RD; n = 17), mathematical disabilities (MD; n = 22), or combined reading and mathematical disabilities (RD+MD; n = 28) were compared to average achieving (AA; n = 45) peers on working memory measures. On all working memory components, 2 (RD vs. no RD) × 2 (MD vs. no MD) factorial ANCOVAs revealed clear differences between children with and without RD. Children with MD had lower span scores than the AA children on measures of the phonological loop and the central executive. A significant interaction effect between RD and MD was found only fo

Evaluating working memory outcome measures for children with Down syndrome.

BACKGROUND: There is a critical need for the psychometric evaluation of outcome measures to be used in clinical trials targeting cognition in Down syndrome (DS). This study examines a specific cognitive skill that is of particular importance in DS, working memory, and the psychometric properties of a set of standardised measurements to assess working memory in individuals with DS. METHODS: Ninety children and adolescents ages 6 to 18 years old with DS were assessed on a selection of verbal and visuospatial working memory subtests of standardised clinical assessments at two time points to exam

Addiction denial and cognitive dysfunction: a preliminary investigation.

This study explored the proposition that denial of addiction is often more a product of cognitive failure due to cerebral dysfunction than an emotion-driven rejection of the truth. Forty-four subjects were studied in an inpatient alcohol rehabilitation program. Denial was defined as the proportion of standardized denial-related treatment goals established at admission that remained unachieved at discharge. Cognitive deficiencies were identified through neuropsychological assessments. Persistent denial was significantly correlated with greater impairment of executive function, verbal memory, vi

Fornix damage and memory. A case report.

The role of the fornix for episodic memory processing is still a matter of controversy. A juvenile patient of average post-surgical intelligence with fornical damage due to tumor removal is described. The fornix was damaged bilaterally at the level of the fornical columns. The patient thereafter suffered major anterograde amnesia which was most pronounced in tests using long delays (e.g., in the delayed recall index of the revised Wechsler Memory Scale). Amnesia was a prominent on the verbal as on the nonverbal level. Attention, concentration and short term memory abilities were preserved. Cog…
