[Medical and social characteristics of the very old Moscow citizens and World War II veterans].

The very old people is a growing population group in Russia and in Moscow in particular that requires more close attention as it demands special medical and social approaches. The investigation was based on data obtained from Moscow district clinics concerning the gender and pathologies structure of people aged 90 yrs and older. In this group women prevailed in total amount and among those older 100 yrs. Striking gender difference was revealed in disturbances of the carbohydrate metabolism. The most frequent pathologies in this population are cardiovascular, nerve and gastrointestine duct syst

Disseminated strongyloidiasis in a World War II Veteran with metastatic undifferentiated carcinoma of neuroendocrine type.

This case of disseminated strongyloidiasis illustrates the need for a high index of suspicion and effective screening for this pathogen in certain high-risk patient populations before giving immunosuppressive therapy. A complete travel and military history should be obtained. In the United States, persons with a history of military service in endemic areas, emigrants from endemic areas, patients in institutions, and residents of the Southeast should have careful evaluation for strongyloidiasis. Eosinophilia may or may not be present. Stool examinations are not sufficient to rule out the diagno

Symptom and comorbidity patterns in World War II and Vietnam veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder.

Forty-four veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) from World War II and Vietnam were compared. The groups were comparable on many socioeconomic and combat measures and age at onset of PTSD. Vietnam veterans exhibited more severe PTSD symptoms, higher Hamilton depression scores, and higher scores on the hostility, psychoticism, and "additional symptom" Symptom Checklist-90 (SCL-90) scales. They also had more survivor guilt, impairment of work and interests, avoidance of reminders of trauma, detachment/estrangement from others, startle response, derealization, and suicidal tendencies…

Mammography screening trends: the perspective of African American women born pre/post World War II.

Researchers have traditionally combined aging women (aged > or =50 years) when reporting their mammography use. This may inadvertently mask important cohort effects in mammography use, which are likely to result from distinct personal life experiences and generational differences. Using the Health and Retirement Study samples of 1998, 2000, and 2004, we examined cohort differences in mammography use between African American women born before 1946 (non-baby boomers) and those born in 1946 to 1953 (baby boomers). Between 1998 and 2004, screening rates for non-baby boomers declined, while those f

Between East and West: Unitarian Service Committee's medical mission in post-World War II Poland.

In the aftermath of the Second World War, Poland faced immense public health challenges amidst widespread destruction and political transformation. This article explores the largely overlooked medical mission of the Unitarian Service Committee (USC) in Poland, situating it within both humanitarian and geopolitical contexts. Drawing on archival research and press accounts, the study reconstructs the USC's multifaceted aid efforts, including its Medical Teaching Mission, the establishment of the Piekary Śląskie hospital, and tuberculosis control initiatives. The analysis highlights how the USC c

Civilian Casualty Management in World War II: A Case Study of Plymouth's Halwell Street Mortuary.

On the eve of the Second World War, Britain prepared for the likelihood of civilian mass casualty events by directing Local Authorities to requisition property for mortuaries and to staff these facilities. In Plymouth, a lumber yard on Halwell Street served as the city's principal wartime mortuary. The scale of the German Luftwaffe's aerial assault in the spring of 1941 presented challenges. Plymouth's largest civilian mass casualty incident occurred at Portland Square on 23 April. Although Plymouth followed Ministry of Health guidance in preparing for treating civilian war dead, the intensity

Psychosocial consequences of growing up as Austrian occupation children in post-World-War II Austria.

Background: During the post-World War II occupation of Austria, approximately 20,000-30,000 'children born of war' (CBOW), also called occupation children were born through intimate contacts between Austrian women and occupation soldiers. Research on other CBOW populations indicates that CBOW mostly grow up under difficult conditions, sometimes with strong long-term mental health consequences. Objective: To examine whether comparable psychosocial consequences can be found in Austrian occupation children (AOC), a first quantitative study was carried out.Method: Child maltreatment, post-traumatic…

Animal industry and veterinary science in eastern New Guinea: World War II to Independence, 1975.

We have described the efforts of the Australian administration of the Territory of Papua and New Guinea (TPNG) to establish a veterinary service and viable animal industries. These efforts began with planning before the end of World War II in 1945 and continued until independence in 1975. Whereas pre-war cattle had mostly been used to control grass on plantations, post-war, the objective was to use the country's extensive, unoccupied grasslands for cattle production. During this period, the cattle population increased from 4000 to more than 150,000. The greatest success was achieved in herds w…

Severe caloric restriction in young women during World War II and subsequent breast cancer risk.

AIM: The objective of the study was to examine the impact of WWII-related caloric restriction (CR) on subsequent breast cancer (BC) risk based on individual exposure experiences and whether this effect was modified by age at exposure. METHODOLOGY: We compared 65 breast cancer patients diagnosed between 2005-2010 to 200 controls without breast cancer who were all members of various organizations for Jewish WWII survivors in Israel. All participants were Jewish women born in Europe prior to 1945 who lived at least 6 months under Nazi rule during WWII and immigrated to Israel after the war. We e

Trauma and post-traumatic stress symptoms in former German child soldiers of World War II.

BACKGROUND: The aim of the study was to determine the amount of trauma impact and significant post-traumatic stress symptoms, which can indicate a possible post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), in a sample of former German child soldiers of World War II. METHODS: 103 participants were recruited through the press, then administered a modified Post-traumatic Diagnostic Scale (PDS). RESULTS: Subjects reported a high degree of trauma exposure, with 4.9% reporting significant post-traumatic stress symptoms after WW II, and 1.9% reporting that these symptoms persist to the present. CONCLUSION: I…

Effects of Military Service on Marital Stability Among World War II U.S. Veterans of Japanese Descent.

INTRODUCTION: This study had two goals. First, we investigated how World War II (WW II) military service impacted marital stability during men's young and middle adulthood in a large community sample of American men of Japanese descent. Second, within a subgroup of WW II veterans, we assessed how the level of combat exposure affected marital stability. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The Honolulu Heart Program and later Honolulu-Asia Aging Project were longitudinal, community-based studies of Japanese-American men living in Hawai'i. This study is a secondary data analysis of 1,249 male WW II veterans a…

Psychiatric casualties in the Pacific during World War II: servicemen hospitalised in a Brisbane mental hospital.

World War II created many psychiatric casualties but precise incidences were not accurately established. Battle shock was under-reported as some commanding officers were reluctant to admit that their men experienced battle stress. The objective in triage of any casualties was to retain as many patients in the war zone as possible, if further useful service was feasible. This also applied to soldiers with stress-related symptoms, who were treated in base hospitals as near to an operational zone as possible. The main treating maxims were "immediacy, proximity and expectancy", which involved rapi…
