Acquired haemolytic anaemia due to isohaemagglutinins of donor origin following ABO-minor-incompatible kidney transplantation.

Of 1041 renal allograft transplantations performed in our centre, 142 (13.6%) were carried out with ABO-minor-incompatible kidneys. Anti-recipient ABO antibodies were found in two of 34 patients treated with cyclosporin. These two cases of severe but self-limited haemolysis due to anti-A1 and anti-B, respectively, are reported in detail. Among 108 azathioprine-treated patients no evidence of the disorder was found. The condition should be suspected in any recipient with an unexpected reduction in haematrocrit or other signs of haemolysis after ABO-minor-incompatible organ transplantation.

ABO blood group incompatible kidney transplantation: a case report and review of the literature.

A patient with end-stage renal failure, two previously failed kidney transplants and high serum lymphocytotoxic antibody levels was transplanted electively with an ABO-mismatched, HLA-identical kidney from his sibling. Immunosuppression consisted of pretransplant splenectomy and plasma exchange, followed by rabbit antithymocyte serum, azathioprine, prednisone and plasma exchange in the early post-transplant period. He is now 3 years post-transplant with normal renal function on conventional immunosuppressive therapy. This case, and a review of the literature, suggest that ABO blood group incom

Early diagnosis of ABO haemolytic disease of the newborn.

To assess the usefulness of cord blood tests in diagnosing ABO-haemolytic disease of the newborn (ABO-HDN), 132 term, adequate for gestational age (AGA) neonates were evaluated. The tests studied and their significant results were: quantitative elution test (greater than or equal to 1/16), direct Coombs test (positive), bilirubin concentration (greater than or equal to 4 mg/dl). In none of the 56 O+ newborn infants delivered by O+ women were the results of any test positive. Of the 76 A+ and B+ newborn infants delivered by O+ women, 17 (22%) developed ABO-HDN. When the combined result of any t

Cell surface antigen in bilharzial bladder tumours.

Detection of the ABO (H) blood group in the urothelium in cases of transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder is a good indicator of the future behaviour of these tumours. Since conventional histopathological and clinical examination in bilharzial bladder carcinoma shows a clinical staging error rate of 37.2%, we used the specific red cell adherence (SRCA) technique to study the cell surface antigens in 28 patients over a 5-year period. A prediction rate of 63.6 to 84.6% was obtained when correlated with clinical behaviour.

[Influence of the serum globulins of persons differing in the ABO system on allergic responses of the immediate type].

The antianaphylactic effect of globulins obtained from human sera of different blood groups of the ABO system on the active and passive anaphylaxis of guinea pigs, and on mast cells destruction was studied. A marked inhibitory action of globulins obtained from human serum of the B (111) blood group on the allergic reactions of the immediate type was shown. Globulins from the 0 (1) group did not possess such action.

Blood group activities in water-soluble glycoproteins and in microsomal fractions of gastric mucosa in peptic ulcer and gastric cancer patients.

The existence of ABH blood group activities in water-soluble glycoproteins of human gastric mucosa, particularly in peptic ulcer and gastric cancer patients was studied. Special attention was paid to the sampling technique which would allow one to get a more complete picture of the total gastric mucosal area. An attempt was also made to localize the blood group substances in subcellular fractions. The results seem to indicate that the secretion of A–H or B–H active substances is quite homogeneous. In the gastric cancer material occasional samples were lacking H-activity, and in special cases a

[The pretransfusion bedside agglutination test is not a "Gold Standard"].

ABO-incompatible transfusions remain frequent in Europe despite the technological progresses in relation with the potential number of human errors during the control procedures of the transfusion chain. The agglutination bedside-test is only one step of this chain and the amelioration of the security will be achieved by its replacement by an electronical check.

Analysis of ABO discrepancies occurring in 35 French hospitals.

BACKGROUND: The risk of immunohemolytic reaction owing to ABO-mismatched mistransfusion is 100 to 1000 times higher than the risk of viral infection. Like analysis of incident reports, evaluation of near-miss events can provide useful insight into hazardous situations for mis-matched blood transfusion. The aim of this prospective study was to assess the incidence and root causes of all ABO discrepancies, detected by a central hematology laboratory, in blood samples referred from 35 district hospitals. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: ABO discrepancies were detected by comparing either two current bl

The first Korean case report of anti-Gerbich.

In this study, we report the first Korean case of an anti-Gerbich (Ge) alloantibody to a high-incidence antigen that belongs to the Ge blood group system. The alloantibody was detected in a middle-aged Korean woman who did not have a history of transfusion. Her blood type was B+, and findings from the antibody screening test revealed 1+ reactivity in all panels except the autocontrol. The cross-matching test showed incompatible results with all 5 packed red blood cells. Additional blood type antigen and antibody tests confirmed the anti-Ge alloantibody. While rare, cases of hemolytic transfusi

Association of blood group types and clinico-pathological features of gynecological cancers (GCs).

BACKGROUND: Gynecological cancers (GCs) affect the reproductive system of females, and are of multiple types depending on the affected organ most common of which are cervical, endometrial, ovarian cancers. Among different risk factors for GCs, ABO blood group system is considered as one of the pivotal contributing factors for increased susceptibility of GCs. The aim of our study was to report on the demographics of GC patients and to investigate the relationship between the ABO blood group system and the risk of acquiring GC in our population. METHODS: The current retrospective cross-sectiona

Prevalence and obstetric outcome of women with red cell antibodies in pregnancy at the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, West Yorkshire, England.

OBJECTIVE: The prevalence of red cell antibodies in pregnancy varies with ethnicity and geographical location, while the obstetric outcome depends on the available standard of care. Despite being the tertiary fetal medicine centre in West Yorkshire, the prevalence of red cell antibodies, and the outcome of pregnancies associated with these antibodies at the Leeds University Teaching Hospitals Trust remains unreported. This article aims to provide this information for the purpose of patient education and counselling. STUDY DESIGN: The data of pregnant women with red cell antibodies between Jan

Distribution of ABO and Rh Blood Groups in Patients With Keratoconus: A Case-Control Study.

UNLABELLED: Association of keratoconus (KC) with genetic predisposition and environmental factors has been well documented. However, no single study has investigated the possible relationship between ABO and Rh blood groups and KC. METHODS: A case-control study was designed in a university hospital enrolling 214 patients with KC in the case group and equal number of age- and sex-matched healthy subjects in the control group. Primary characteristics, ABO blood group, and Rh factors were compared between the two groups. Topographic findings of KC eyes and the severity of the diseases were inves

Diagnostic laboratory technologies for the fetus and neonate with isoimmunization.

Maternal-fetal blood group incompatibility is common but less commonly results in hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN). HDFN is associated with greater peak bilirubin, at an earlier age, and for longer duration than other causes of hyperbilirubinemia. It poses a substantial risk for kernicterus and accounts for the majority of exchange transfusions for hyperbilirubinemia. Advances in diagnosis and management are described, from identification of the alloimmunized pregnancy by maternal ABO and Rh typing, antibody screen (indirect Coombs test), identification and titration; laborato
