Disturbed coarticulation in apraxia of speech: acoustic evidence.

The results of a recent perceptual study (W. Ziegler & D. von Cramon, 1985, Anticipatory coarticulation in a patient with apraxia of speech. Brain and Language 26, 117-130) provided evidence for disturbed coarticulation in verbal apraxia. Further support for this finding is now provided by acoustic analyses. Formant frequencies and LP reflection coefficients were chosen to assess anticipatory vowel-to-vowel coarticulation and vowel anticipation in stop consonants, respectively. These parameters revealed a lack of coarticulatory cohesion in the speech of a patient suffering from verbal apraxia,

[Experiences with the implantation of a multichannel electrode in the acoustic nerve].

The authors developed a surgical approach to the acoustic nerve enabling the introduction of an electrode into the acoustic nerve. A multichannel electrode was implanted by this method in a deaf patient. The receiver casing for percutaneous transmission was fixed in the mastoid. Encouraging hearing results were obtained over a period of two months by electrical stimulation of the acoustic nerve.

The anatomical consequences of acoustic injury: A review and tutorial.

The anatomic consequences of acoustic overstimulation are explored in this presentation, and attention is directed toward issues where improvements in technology and empirical observation are needed before further advances in our understanding can be achieved. Gains have been made in the last decade in appreciating sound-induced cochlear injury, but there is now a need to evaluate not only cochlear pathology but also the functional state of the surviving structures. There is a wealth of information about the susceptibility of inner or outer hair cells to acoustic injury; however, the etiology

The acoustic impedance locus for normal human ears.

The ear's complex acoustic impedance locus for frequencies from 200 Hz to 2 kHz was obtained for 20 subjects screened for normal hearing. The purpose of the experiment was to observe "kinks" in the total driving point impedance locus of the ear, as measured by acoustic impedance in the ear canal at a depth comparable to that of clinical audiometry. Such impendance bumps or loops are expected to contribute to irregularities seen in high-frequency clinical tympanograms. The transducer probe consisted of two 1/8 inch condenser microphones inserted in the ear canal. The instrumentation used a cont

Transcranial conduction of acoustic-reflex-eliciting signals.

Conduction of a broad-band signal from a supra-aural earphone to an acoustic-immittance instrument coupled to the contralateral ear canal was studied using three commercial immittance instruments. Results indicated that portions of the broad-band signal reached the contralateral ear canal at presentation levels of 100-110 dB SPL. At levels as low as 100 dB SPL, the signal was detected by at least one of the acoustic-immittance instruments. At higher sound pressure levels the transmitted signal caused deflections of the acoustic-immittance meter similar to those associated with an acoustic-refl

Acoustic reflex thresholds: variability and distribution effects.

Acoustic reflex thresholds (ARTs) at 500, 1000, and 2000 Hz from 1833 ears were subjected to multiple linear regression analyses using a stepwise inclusion model to determine the effects of hearing losses in the 500- to 4000-Hz range for each of the activators. Although statistically significant regression equations were developed, these accounted for only 1 to 47% of the variance of ART levels. In light of the wide variance of ARTs unexplainable directly from audiometric data, it was deemed more appropriate to consider the range of ARTs from the standpoint of the sampling distribution of ARTs

Acoustic reflex temporal summation measured at threshold.

This study measured the threshold of the acoustic reflex as a function of reflex-activating stimulus duration. Acoustic reflex thresholds (ARTs) were measured for tonal stimuli at frequencies of 1000 and 3000 Hz and broadband noise at six durations between 20 and 500 msec for both normal and hearing-impaired subjects. Traditional techniques and response averaging were used. Results suggest that these methods have a significant influence on ART and reflex temporal summation at threshold. Lowest thresholds and almost no temporal summation were found with a response averaging technique and a bidi

Acoustic measurement of voice quality in central dysphonia.

Speech samples of 14 male and 10 female patients with central dysphonia were examined. Eighteen patients had suffered a severe closed head trauma and the remaining six patients had experienced cerebrovascular accident (CVA). Several parameters were developed in order to find acoustic correlates for three major pathologic voice qualities in central dysphonia. The well know jitter parameter, fundamental period perturbation (PP), was adapted for our purposes and proved to be a good measure for rough voices, though the patients revealed less jitter than in peripheral dysphonia. The vocal onset par

Diethyldithiocarbamate depresses the acoustic startle response in rats.

The relationship between norepinephrine (NE) content in cortex and spinal cord and acoustic startle amplitude was investigated in two experiments. Administration of diethyldithiocarbamate (DDC) depressed startle amplitude at the same time and dose that it most severely depleted NE content. These results support the conclusion that NE facilitates the normal elaboration of the acoustic startle reflex and also support evidence that NE activity in the spinal cord may be of particular importance in the maintenance of normal startle amplitude.

Sensorineural and vascular changes in an ear with acoustic neurinoma.

The temporal bones from a 55-year-old woman with deafness and dizzy spells caused by a right-sided acoustic neurinoma were examined by the techniques of microdissection, surface preparations, and celloidin sections. Sensorineural degeneration was present in the basal end of the right cochlea but was not severe enough to explain the deafness. The compression of the cochlear nerve by the tumor was postulated to have caused deafness by injury to neurons adjacent and central to the tumor. There was profound degeneration of the vestibular nerve and sensory cells. A gelatinous material occluded the

Technique of hearing preservation in small acoustic neuromas.

The ideal operation for acoustic neurinoma would not only provide total excision without injury to the brain stem and with preservation of facial nerve function, but would also allow retention of useful hearing in those patients who come to operation with intact hearing function. Documented preservation of useful hearing in the rather extensive literature concerning acoustic neurinomas is rare. An operative technique has been developed utilizing a retromastoid approach, brain stem auditory-evoked potentials and direct auditory monitoring, facial nerve electromyography, and microsurgical techni

A physiological study of acoustic blinking reflex in the cat.

Blinking reflex was elicited by acoustic stimulus to investigate the reflex pathway in the encéphalo isolé cat. Reflex responses were recorded using electromyography (EMG) of the orbicularis oculi. The investigation was as follows: After stimulation by a loud click sound, the EMGs of the orbicularis oculi were elicited bilaterally. Latencies were 17-20 msec on the ipsilateral side, and 19-21 msec on the contralateral side. By electrical stimulation of the peripheral nerve in the cochlea and the acoustic nerve EMGs were also obtained. The latencies of the electrical stimulation responses correl

Malignant nerve sheath tumor of acoustic nerve.

A malignant nerve sheath tumor of the acoustic nerve was found in a 54-year-old man whose right acoustic nerve signs had shown gradual worsening during the previous five years. No stigmata of von Recklinghausen's disease were noted. The tumor at autopsy extensively involved the brain stem, cerebellar hemisphere, tentorium of cerebellum, and cerebral occipitotemporal lobe on the right side. Histologically, the tumor was characterized by extreme hypercellularity, pleomorphism, and high mitotic activity. Ultrastructurally, there was an external lamina around the interdigitated cytoplasm of the tu

Assessment of hearing level by means of the acoustic reflex.

It has been suggested that hearing level might be assessed by comparing the acoustic reflex thresholds (ARTs) for two modes of stimulation: by pure tones alone and by a combination of two pure tones, one of which is used as a "preactivator." Using an extrapolatory method for determining the reflex thresholds, 35 subjects (17 normal hearing and 18 hearing impaired) were used to test the above hypothesis. For the individual frequencies 75% of the hearing levels estimated from the ARTs lay within +/- 10 dB of the true threshold, and 97% within +/- 20 dB. However, although the method does appear t

Acoustic trauma effects with varying exposure times.

Guinea pigs have been exposed to 20 kHz for 2 h, 1 h, 30 min, 15 min, or 7.5 min, and the resultant damage was observed 3, 6, and 12 weeks post exposure. The areas of outer hair cell damage were statistically compared. Significant differences were obtained after a 3-week survival time with the shorter exposure times, but this difference was no longer apparent after 12 weeks. Myelinated nerve fibre and inner hair cell damage occurred only with total outer hair cell loss.

The relations between area functions and the acoustic signal.

To derive speech wave data from area function specifications and the reverse, to predict the area function from the speech wave, are fundamental problems of acoustic theory of speech production. Deviations from ideal resonator theory in terms of vocal tract boundary conditions and source filter interactions are discussed. Perturbation theory is related to special problems of male-female vocal scaling. Shortcomings of the inverse transforms are discussed. Merits of lossy transmission line theory over standard linear prediction procedures are emphasized. The use of bandwidths for removing ambigu

Airway area by acoustic reflections measured at the mouth.

We tested the hypothesis that features of upper airway and tracheal geometry can be inferred from acoustic reflection data recorded at the mouth. In six subjects we computed inferences of airway cross-sectional area vs. distance and compared them with measurements obtained from orthogonal radiographic projections of the trachea. The acoustic data show local area maxima at the uvula and hypopharynx and local minima at the oropharynx and the glottis. With subjects breathing air the inferred tracheal areas markedly exceeded the radiographic measurements. With subjects breathing 80% He-20% O2 ther

The acoustic reflex latency test: clinical application.

Acoustic reflex latency is the time interval between onset of an intense auditory stimulus and onset of middle-ear muscle contraction. The hypothesis was proposed that a retrocochlear lesion involving the afferent (VIIIth nerve) portion of the reflex arc should result in a prolongation of the reflex latency. A clinical procedure, the Acoustic Reflex Latency Test (ARLT), its protocol, methods and equipment were developed in order to test this hypothesis clinically. Absolute latency values and interaural latency differences (ILD) were established on 4 populations which included normals, cochlear
