The co-evolution of conditional cooperation and social norms has garnered significant attention, yet the underlying mechanisms remain elusive. Social norms result from empirical expectations, individual expectations of group behavior, and normative expectations, the population's expectations of individual behavior. Aligning these expectations aids in norm formation, but diverse individual reactions to observed behavior and their sensitivity to norm conformity can be challenging. In our study, the agents are initially endowed with diverse conditional expectations, which mirror their anticipatio

Transitioning between gravitational environments results in a central reinterpretation of sensory information, producing an adapted sensorimotor state suitable for motor actions and perceptions in the new environment. Critically, this central adaptation is not instantaneous, and complete adaptation may require weeks of prolonged exposure to novel environments. To mitigate risks associated with the lagging time course of adaptation (e.g., spatial orientation misperceptions, alterations in locomotor and postural control, and motion sickness), it is critical that we better understand sensorimotor

Despite 25 years of research on the topic, there is still no consensus on whether prism adaptation is an effective therapy for visuospatial neglect. We have addressed this question through a meta-analysis of the most well-controlled studies on the topic. Our main meta-analytic model included studies with a placebo/sham/treatment-as-usual control group from which data from right hemisphere stroke patients and left-sided neglect could be aggregated. The short-term treatment effects on the two commonly used standard tests for neglect, the conventional Behavioural Inattention Test (BIT-C) and canc

The mechanobiology of the human femoral neck is a focus of research for many reasons including studies that aim to curb age-related bone loss that contributes to a near-exponential rate of hip fractures. Many believe that the femoral neck is often loaded in rather simple bending, which causes net tension stress in the upper (superior) femoral neck and net compression stress in its inferior aspect ("T/C paradigm"). This T/C loading regime lacks in vivo proof. The "C/C paradigm" is a plausible alternative simplified load history that is characterized by a gradient of net compression across the e

Burkholderia pseudomallei, a Gram-negative pathogen, is the causative agent of melioidosis in humans. This bacterium can be isolated from the soil, stagnant and salt-water bodies, and human and animal clinical specimens. While extensive studies have contributed to our understanding of B. pseudomallei pathogenesis, little is known about how a harmless soil bacterium adapts when it shifts to a human host and exhibits its virulence. The bacterium's large genome encodes an array of factors that support the pathogen's ability to survive under stressful conditions, including the host's internal mili

Objective.Somatosensory perception is disrupted in patients with a lower limb amputation. This increases the difficulty to maintain balance and leads to the development of neuromuscular adjustments. We investigated how these adjustments are reflected in the co-activation of lower body muscles and are modulated by visual feedback.Approach.We measured electromyography (EMG) signals of muscles from the trunk (erector spinae and obliquus external), and the lower intact/dominant leg (tibialis anterior and medial gastrocnemius) in 11 unilateral transfemoral amputees and 11 age-matched able-bodied co

During human walking the whole body center-of-mass (COM) trajectory may be a control objective, a goal the central nervous system uses to plan and regulate movement. Our previous observation, that after practice walking in a novel laterally directed force field people adapt a COM trajectory similar to their normal trajectory, supports this idea. However, our prior work only presented data demonstrating changes in COM trajectory in response to a single force field. To evaluate whether this phenomena is robust, in the present study we present new data demonstrating that people adapt their COM tr

Essential tremor (ET) is a progressive movement disorder whose pathophysiology is not fully understood. Current evidence supports the view that the cerebellum is critically involved in the genesis of the tremor in ET. However, it is still unknown whether cerebellar dysfunction affects not only the control of current movements but also the prediction of future movements through dynamic adaptation toward a changed environment. Here, we tested the capacity of 28 patients with ET to adapt in a visuomotor adaptation task known to depend on intact cerebellar function. We found specific impairments i

Promiscuous activities have been related to the capacity to catalyze reactions different from those a protein has evolved to sustain. In this work, we rethought the serum albumin's promiscuous behavior using evolutionary and structural analysis. We found that the cross aldol condensation of acetone and p-formylbenzonitrile is a promiscuous reaction conserved in humans serum albumin and in closely related albumins from other mammals. Evolutionary analysis indicates that the residues involved in this promiscuous reaction are evolving under positive selection, an evolutionary pattern indicating a

BACKGROUND: Naked mole-rats (Heterocephalus glaber, NMRs) and blind mole-rats (Spalax galili, BMRs) are representative subterranean rodents that have evolved many extraordinary traits, including hypoxia tolerance, longevity, and cancer resistance. Although multiple candidate loci responsible for these traits have been uncovered by genomic studies, many of them are limited to functional changes to amino acid sequence and little is known about the contributions of other genetic events. To address this issue, we focused on gene losses (unitary pseudogenes) and systematically analyzed gene losses

Animal and human literature supports spatial-motor "Aiming" bias, a frontal-subcortical syndrome, as a core deficit in spatial neglect. However, spatial neglect treatment studies rarely assess Aiming errors. Two knowledge gaps result: spatial neglect rehabilitation studies fail to capture the impact on motor-exploratory aspects of functional disability. Also, across spatial neglect treatment studies, discrepant treatment effects may also result from sampling different proportions of patients with Aiming bias. We review behavioural evidence for Aiming spatial neglect, and demonstrate the import

The peripersonal space (PPS) is a multisensory and sensorimotor interface between our body and the environment. The location of PPS boundary is not fixed. Rather, it adapts to the environmental context and differs greatly across individuals. Recent studies have started to unveil the neural correlates of individual differences in PPS extension; however, this picture is not clear yet. Here, we used approaching auditory stimuli and magnetoencephalography to capture the individual boundary of PPS and examine its neural underpinnings. In particular, building upon previous studies from our own group

Animals inhabiting the intertidal zone are exposed to abrupt changes in environmental conditions associated with the rise and fall of the tide. For convenience, the majority of laboratory studies on intertidal organisms have acclimated individuals to permanently submerged conditions in seawater tanks. In this study, green shore crabs, Carcinus maenas, were acclimated to either a simulated tidal regime of continuous emersion-immersion ('tidal') or to permanently submerged conditions ('non-tidal') to assess their physiological responses to subsequent emersion. Tidal crabs exhibited an endogenous

Marine spatial planning that addresses ocean climate-driven change ('climate-smart MSP') is a global aspiration to support economic growth, food security and ecosystem sustainability. Ocean climate change ('CC') modelling may become a key decision-support tool for MSP, but traditional modelling analysis and communication challenges prevent their broad uptake. We employed MSP-specific ocean climate modelling analyses to inform a real-life MSP process; addressing how nature conservation and fisheries could be adapted to CC. We found that the currently planned distribution of these activities may

Persistent uplift means the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) is an ideal natural laboratory to investigate genome evolution and adaptation within highland environments. However, how paleogeographic and paleoclimatic events influence the genome and population of endemic fish species remains unclear. Glyptosternon maculatum is an ancient endemic fish found on the QTP and the only critically endangered species in the Sisoridae family. Here, we found that major transposons in the G. maculatum genome showed episodic bursts, consistent with contemporaneous geological and climatic events during the QTP fo

UNLABELLED: The inclusion of 7-10-year-old children in the school system occurs in the context of the interaction of two processes: activation of ontogenesis at this stage of age development and stimulation of biological and psychological adaptation of younger schoolchildren to the learning activity. The main factors negatively affecting the health of elementary school students are the following: hypokinesia, mental and psycho-emotional stress related to computer and digital learning technologies, prolonged stay in closed rooms of the educational institution rather than in the natural environm

Astronauts on board the International Space Station (ISS) must adapt to several environmental challenges including microgravity, elevated carbon dioxide (CO2), and isolation while performing highly controlled movements with complex equipment. Head down tilt bed rest (HDBR) is an analog used to study spaceflight factors including body unloading and headward fluid shifts. We recently reported how HDBR with elevated CO2 (HDBR+CO2) affects visuomotor adaptation. Here we expand upon this work and examine the effects of HDBR+CO2 on brain activity during visuomotor adaptation. Eleven participants (34

INTRODUCTION: Several studies have shown an association between panic disorder (PD) and reduced balance abilities, mainly based on functional balance scales. This pilot study aims to demonstrate the feasibility of studying balance abilities of persons with PD (PwPD) using computerized static and, for the first time, dynamic balance measurements in order to characterize balance control strategies employed by PwPD.
METHODS: Twelve PwPD and 11 healthy controls were recruited. PD diagnosis was confirmed using the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fourth edition (DSM-IV), and

In humans and other vertebrates, the range of disturbances and behavioural changes induced by spaceflight conditions are well known. Sensory organs and the central nervous system (CNS) are forced to adapt to new environmental conditions of weightlessness. In comparison with peripheral vestibular organs and behavioural disturbances in weightlessness conditions, the CNS vestibular centres of vertebrates, including the cerebellum, have been poorly examined in orbital experiments, as well as in experimental micro- and hypergravity. However, the cerebellum serves as a critical control centre for le
