Infantile fibrosarcoma of ethmoid sinus, misdiagnosed as an adenoid in a 5-year-old child.

Infantile fibrosarcoma of head and neck is rare and the presence of this tumor in ethmoid sinus is even more uncommon. To the best of our knowledge, <5 cases have been reported in the last 20 years in the English literature, so far, only one of which has been infantile type in a 15 months old girl. In this case report, we will explain our experience with a rare case of infantile fibrosarcoma originating from ethmoid sinus in a 5-year-old boy who presented with dyspnea and epistaxis. After biopsy, it was diagnosed as fibrosarcoma of sinus origin.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma: A review of recent advances, molecular targets, and clinical trials.

BACKGROUND: Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a rare tumor of secretory glands. In this study, recent advances in molecular characterization and in therapeutics are reviewed. METHODS: A search of articles in PubMed and of abstracts from national meetings was performed regarding ACC. RESULTS: Recent genetic analyses found that recurrent chromosome 6:9 translocations in ACC generate an MYB:NFIB gene fusion resulting in overexpression of the MYB oncoprotein. Several other frequent mutations are recently published that may be relevant for drug development. Several trials of targeted drugs are re

Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma- A rare Differential Diagnosis for a mass in the External Auditory Canal.

Primary external auditory canal malignancies are very rare; in which, adenoid cystic carcinoma is extremely rare tumour accounting for approximately 5%. Majority of the patients presents with unilateral severe or dull aching constant ear pain of prolonged duration, reduced hearing and mass in the External Ear. These tumours are treated with aggressive surgical excision and adjuvant radiotherapy. Despite this, the overall prognosis is poor due to recurrences and distant metastasis. We report a rare case of adenoid cystic carcinoma in a 36-year-old female, who presented with right ear pain for t

Comparison of nasal mucociliary clearance in adenoid hypertrophy with or without otitis media with effusion.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate pre- and postoperative mucociliary clearance in patients with adenoid hypertrophy or combined with otitis media with effusion. METHODS: Patients were divided into two groups: Group 1-patients with adenoid hypertrophy (AH), and Group 2-patients with AH and otitis media with effusion (AHOME). In all patients, AH size was recorded, and the Andersen saccharin and methylene blue tests were conducted before and 1 month after surgery to obtain mucociliary clearance time (MCT). Nasal cavity length was measured intraoperatively to establish mucociliary clearance velocity (MCV

Ectopic thyroid papillary carcinoma of nasopharynx associated with adenoid hypertrophy: an unusual presentation.

Ectopic thyroid tissue of nasopharynx is an uncommon phenomenon and papillary thyroid carcinoma arising from the tissue is extremely rare. The authors report a rare case of 16-year-old girl with papillary thyroid carcinoma of nasopharynx. Clinicians were ever confused by adenoid hypertrophy and solved the diagnostic dilemma by adequate examinations. In the case, we mainly emphasize that surgeons should be aware of and actively consider such a possibility of ectopic papillary thyroid carcinoma of nasopharynx in children and adolescents with long-term nasal obstruction, even if thyroid carcinoma

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the cardia: Report of a rare case and review of the Chinese literature.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a relatively common head and neck tumor, however, is rare in the digestive tracts. There have been <100 cases of esophageal ACC reported to date and no cases of gastric ACC. The present study reports the exceptional case of a 53-year-old male with a primary ACC of the cardia. The patient underwent a radical total gastrectomy with D2 lymphadenectomy and Roux-en-Y esophagojejunal reconstruction. Immunohistochemical analysis identified a case of primary ACC that exhibited a positive expression for cytokeratin, calponin, cluster of differentiation 117, p63 and smo

[Clinical outcome and clinicopathological prognostic factors in adenoid cystic carcinoma of the head and neck].

We retrospectively reviewed the records of the 30 patients with adenoid cystic carcinoma of the head and neck (ACCHN) who had undergone initial treatment in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery, Keio University School of Medicine between 1988 and 2007. The primary tumor site was the parotid gland in 10 patients and the submandibular gland in 4 patients, which account for about a half of the subjects. Thirty patients underwent surgical resection with curative intent as the primary treatment, of which 10 patients had post-operative radiotherapy. The 5-and 10-year disease-

Lung metastasis of adenoid cystic carcinoma, which mimicked primary lung cancer.

We report a case of adenoid cystic carcinoma of the submandibular gland where pulmonary metastasis occurred twice 16 years after resection, and each metastasis mimicked primary lung adenocarcinoma in imaging findings. The first pulmonary relapse was clinically diagnosed as primary lung adenocarcinoma and intraoperative pathological examination showed that the tumor was an adenocarcinoma; lobectomy with mediastinal lymph node dissection was performed. However, postoperative immunohistochemical analysis showed that the tumor was a metastatic adenoid cystic carcinoma. During the secondary pulmona

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the prostate: case report on a rare entity and review of the literature.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma is an unusual histological variant of prostatic carcinoma. Because of its rarity, the natural history of this tumor is not known. Here we report this rare entity in a 62-year-old man who presented with symptoms of urinary tract obstruction. Digital rectal examination and ultrasonography (USG) showed an enlarged hard nodular prostate. Serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) and prostatic acid phosphate levels were found to be within the normal range. Transrectal ultrasound-guided 12 core biopsies of prostate showed morphological features of an adenoid cystic carcinoma in

Lateral X-ray view of the skull for the diagnosis of adenoid hypertrophy: a systematic review.

OBJECTIVES: Many studies have been developed aiming to reveal the usefulness of cavum X-rays and telerradiographies as diagnostic tools for the detection of upper airway obstruction due to adenoid hypertrophy. However, the scientific literature is diverse and controversial. Therefore, a systematic review is proposed; with the objective to determine the diagnosis value of lateral X-ray view of the skull regarding adenoid hypertrophy. METHODS: Searching was conducted on Pubmed, Lilacs, Cochrane Library, Embase, and Web of Knowledge databases; and was restricted to studies published in English,

Vandetanib inhibits growth of adenoid cystic carcinoma in an orthotopic nude mouse model.

PURPOSE: Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) can often be controlled with surgery and postoperative adjuvant radiotherapy but is also characterized by late local recurrence and distant metastasis. No effective systemic therapeutic agents have been found to alter the natural history of ACC. Therefore, new therapeutic approaches are needed. In this study, we evaluated whether vandetanib (Zactima), a potent inhibitor of vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-2 (VEGFR-2) and epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) tyrosine kinases, had antitumor efficacy in vitro and in an orthotopic nude mouse mo

Helicobacter pylori in tonsillar and adenoid tissue and its possible role in oropharyngeal carcinogenesis.

Helicobacter pylori is a well-known gastric pathogen. It plays a major role in the pathogenesis of chronic gastritis, duodenal and gastric ulcers, adenocarcinoma and gastric lymphoma. HP infection is one of the most common bacterial infections worldwide. Recently, the oral cavity was proposed as an extragastric reservoir of HP infection. HP was detected by culture and PCR in both dental plaque and saliva. It is supposed that HP infection can cause the same immunological changes in the oropharyngeal mucosa as in gastric mucosa and can also contribute to the progression of oropharyngeal diseases

Molecular and morphological analysis of adenoid cystic carcinoma of the breast with synchronous tubular adenosis.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of the breast is a rare tumour. Its recognition as a special type of breast carcinoma is very important because its prognosis is better than the not-otherwise-specified invasive ductal carcinoma and its treatment may not include axillary dissection. Tubular adenosis (TA) is a very rare condition of the breast that is histologically benign; however, it has been described in association with invasive ductal carcinoma. There are scant data regarding the molecular genomic alterations in ACC of the breast and no data has been presented on TA. Herein, we provide a morp
