This paper describes the development and psychometric evaluation of a brief self-report measure (BEACON) to inform universal mental health screening in schools. Items assess symptoms and impairment associated with anxiety and attention/hyperactivity problems (grades 4-11) as well as depression and eating difficulties (grades 6-11), with optional items for suicidality and self-harm (grades 7-11). Initial item examination based on Item Response Theory (IRT) and classical test theory involved 3844 students in grades 4 through 11 (Study 1) and identified 18 items for grades 4-5 and 31 items for gr

PURPOSE: To undertake the first ultrastructural characterization of human retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) differentiation from fetal development to adolescence.
METHODS: Ten fetal eyes and three eyes aged six, nine, and 17 years were examined in the temporal retina adjacent to the optic nerve head by transmission electron microscopy. The area, number, and distribution of RPE organelles were quantified and interpreted within the context of adjacent photoreceptors, Bruch's membrane, and choriocapillaris maturation.
RESULTS: Between eight to 12 weeks' gestation (WG), pseudostratified columnar

BACKGROUND: Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) have multiple aetiological factors. Although some evidence suggests invasive and lengthy dental procedures may contribute towards TMD development, there is a relative paucity in the literature regarding an association between elements of paediatric dental general anaesthesia (pDGA) and TMDs. This review aims to consider the impact of dental rehabilitation (and its constituent elements) performed under general anaesthesia on the development of TMDs in childhood and adolescence and identify theories and/or gaps in knowledge which may benefit from fu

OBJECTIVE: Friendships and romantic relationships are important sources of support that contribute to well-being for youth across adolescence and emerging adulthood and may be especially important for those with a chronic illness. We examined gender differences in trajectories of peer relationships among those with type 1 diabetes (T1D) and how they differ from those without.
METHODS: Individuals with T1D (N = 132) and controls (N = 131) completed questionnaires across 11 years (M age = 12 years at baseline). Trajectories of friend support, conflict, and companionship were estimated from ages

The challenges of youth employment include providing appropriate job training and safe working conditions for women and men. Adolescents enrolled in the Work-oriented Training Path (WOTP) complete a practicum as part of their vocational preparation, notwithstanding learning difficulties or disabilities. This research-action study among this subpopulation used a method called the self-reflection interview (SRI). Developed in the field of ergonomics, it combines interviews and worksite observations to establish discussion prompts. This method is based on the principles of situated learning. The

Adolescents with spina bifida (SB) face challenges in their transition to adulthood due to intensive medical regimens and delayed development of independence. Despite an increasing interest in the transition of adolescents with SB to adulthood, the clinical evidence of transition care remains limited, and existing studies have focused on the effects of intervention programs. This study aims to describe the process of systematically developing an online-based transition care program for adolescents with SB using the intervention mapping (IM) protocol. IM consists of six steps: (1) logic model o

Adolescence is a time of exceptional physical health juxtaposed against significant psychosocial and weight-related problems. The study included 241, 10-to-13-year-old youth with autism spectrum disorder (ASD, N = 138) or typical development (TD, N = 103). Standardized exams measured pubertal development, height (HT), weight (WT), heart rate (HR), blood pressure (BP) and Body Mass Index (BMI). Analysis of Variance showed no significant between-group differences for HT, WT, HR, or BP (all p > 0.05). There was a significant difference in BMI-percentile between the groups (F(1,234) = 6.05, p = 0.

Background: Conduct disorder (CD) is a mental disorder diagnosed in childhood or adolescence that presents antisocial behaviors, and is associated with structural alterations in brain. However, whether these structural alterations can distinguish CD from healthy controls (HCs) remains unknown. Here, we quantified these structural differences and explored the classification ability of these quantitative features based on machine learning (ML). Materials and Methods: High-resolution 3D structural magnetic resonance imaging (sMRI) was acquired from 60 CD subjects and 60 age-matched HCs. Voxel-bas

OBJECTIVE: Adolescents are considered to be at high risk of developing complications after lower genitourinary tract reconstruction. This perception may be due to base rate bias, where clinicians favor specific information (adolescents with complications), while ignoring more general information (number of total adolescents being followed). The goal of this study was to assess whether age was a true risk factor for subfascial and stomal revisions after continent catheterizable urinary (CCU) channel procedures.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Consecutive patients aged <21 years and who underwent append

BACKGROUND: The rehabilitation of patients with cleft deformities is very complex and unique, and managed by a team of professionals. Quality of life depends on the health, and represents an instrument that examines the disease impact and treatment modalities on the health, integrating an objective assessment of the health status and its subjective experience. Children with clefts are often teased by their peers, and that is the reason why they experience different kinds of psychological distress. Patients with non-syndromic clefts may develop depression and anxiety, hyperactivity, elevated ri

The survival rate of children with esophageal atresia has today reached 95%. However, children are at risk of chronic morbidity related to esophageal and respiratory dysfunction, and associated anomalies. This study describes the pilot testing of a condition-specific health-related quality-of-life instrument for children with esophageal atresia in Sweden and Germany, using a patient-derived development approach consistent with international guidelines. Following a literature review, standardized focus groups were conducted with 30 Swedish families of children with esophageal atresia aged 2-17
