Idiopathic arterial calcification in infancy. Report of a case in a premature fetus.

A case of advanced idiopathic arterial calcification occurred in a macerated male fetus, 29 weeks' gestational age, delivered of a 22-year-old primigravida. The aortic valve, aorta, coronary arteries, ductus arteriosus, and pulmonary, mesenteric, periadrenal, and renal arteries were calcified and were detected on postmortem roentgenogram. Myocardial calcification and endocardial fibroelastosis were also present. The mother's calcium, phosphorus, and alkaline phosphatase levels were normal. Vitamin D intake was not excessive. A maternal febrile illness at 18 to 19 weeks' gestation was the only

Prenatal detection of pericentric inversion of chromosome 12.

A pericentric inversion of chromosome 12 was detected in an unborn baby by a second-trimester amniocentesis for prenatal diagnosis because of advanced maternal age. Subsequently, the identical pericentric inversion was found in the phenotypically normal father and a sibling. In this case of familial pericentric inversion, the parents were assured that their unborn baby was anticipated to be normal. The importance of banding studies for precise identification of structurally abnormal chromosomes and the need for chromosome study of family members for the peroper counseling of prenatal diagnosis…

Antioxidant activities and lipid peroxidation status in human follicular fluid: age-dependent change.

Maternal age is a significant factor influencing in vitro fertilization (IVF) outcomes. Oxidative stress (OS) is one of the major causes of age-related cellular and molecular damage. The purpose of this work was to investigate the correlation between maternal age with intrafollicular antioxidants and OS markers in follicular fluid (FF), and also to determine the OS status in patients of advanced age. This study was a prospective study including 201 women undergoing IVF whose age was between 24 and 45 years old. FF samples were obtained from mature follicles at the time of oocyte retrieval. Aft

Appendictiis in pregnancy.

Twenty-nine cases of acute appendicitis during pregnancy are presented, and the recent literature is reviewed. Occurring once in 1,600 gestations, appendicitis carries a pregnancy loss of 10.8%. Difficulties in diagnosis and delays in treatment increase with advancing gestational age. Aggressive management may minimize the resultant maternal morbidity and fetal mortality.

Review of the 2015 Guidelines for Maternity Care with relevance to congenital disorders.

The 4th edition of the Guidelines for Maternal Care in South Africa published by the National Department of Health in 2015 was evaluated with relevance to the care and prevention of congenital disorders (CDs). Disparate terminology is used for CDs throughout the guidelines, and overall less detail is included on CDs compared with the previous edition. This demonstrates a lack of awareness around the growing health need and contribution of CDs to the disease burden in South Africa (SA). Referrals to medical genetic services in the guidelines for mothers of advanced maternal age and other high-r…

Sociodemographic Trends and Perinatal Outcomes in Fathers 50 Years and Older.

IMPORTANCE: The age of fathers at childbirth is rising, with an increasing number of births attributed to older fathers. While the impact of advanced paternal age has been documented, sociodemographic data about fathers aged 50 years and older remain scarce. OBJECTIVES: To explore sociodemographic and temporal trends among the oldest US fathers (age ≥50 years) and their associations with perinatal outcomes. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This retrospective cross-sectional study included data from all US births from 2011 to 2022 using the National Vital Statistics System. Data were analyz

Maternal age at birth and neonatal mortality: Associations from 67 low-income and middle-income countries.

BACKGROUND: Both young and advanced maternal age have been associated with higher risks of neonatal mortality, but most studies are from high-income countries and the evidence from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) is scarce. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between maternal age at delivery and neonatal mortality in LMICs. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study using data from 159 Demographic and Health Surveys in 67 LMICs between 2000 and 2018. Maternal age at the time of the birth was the exposure variable, and neonatal mortality was the outcome. Multivariable logistic re…

Could Maternal Vitamin D Concentration Affect Cervical Length in Mid-Pregnancy? A Report From an Iranian Tertiary Center.

OBJECTIVE: This descriptive-analytic cross-sectional study aimed to figure out whether maternal serum vitamin D concentration correlates with cervical length measurement in mid-gestation or not. MATERIALS AND METHODS: During Jun-Jan 2021, 213 pregnant women at 18-22 weeks of gestation were investigated. First, demographic features were obtained then, maternal serum vitamin D concentration was measured by enzyme-linked immunoassay and cervical length was measured via transvaginal sonography according to fetal maternal foundation guideline and appropriate statistical test was used to analyze th

Etiological Factors of Orofacial Clefts in a Hospital-Based Population: A Descriptive Analytical Study.

INTRODUCTION: Cleft lip (CL) and cleft palate (CP) are the most common congenital anomalies affecting the craniofacial region. These conditions occur when the tissues forming the upper lip and the roof of the oral cavity fail to fuse properly during embryonic development, usually in the first trimester. Their etiology is multifactorial. Functionally, CL, CP, and cleft lip and palate (CLP) can lead to significant challenges, including feeding difficulties, speech and hearing problems, and psychological issues in children. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was conducted at Drs. Sudha & Nageswar

Prenatal diagnosis and management of omphalopagus conjoined twins with shared cloacal exstrophy: A rare case report.

OBJECTIVE: Omphalopagus conjoined twins with shared cloacal exstrophy is a rare and easily missed diagnosis in early pregnancy. We emphasize the importance of early prenatal diagnosis and management to prevent complications. CASE REPORT: This is a 32-year-old gravida-3, para-0 woman referred at 19th week of gestation age for conjoined twins diagnosed as omphalopagus. Initial evaluations misidentified the condition due to the presence of a large cyst, initially thought to be simple amniotic fluid. Advanced magnetic resonance imaging confirmed shared bowel structures and a significantly dilated

Update on Trends in Placenta Accreta Syndrome and Its Impact on Maternal-Fetal Morbidity in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Placenta accreta spectrum (PAS) is a life-threatening obstetric condition characterized by abnormal placental adherence to the u … k and White individuals. PAS was strongly associated with prior cesarean delivery, placenta previa, advanced maternal age, and comorbidities including hypertension, diabetes, and obesity. PAS significantly increased the risk of severe maternal morbidity, including hysterectomy (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] range: 52.2-151.3), blood transfusion (aOR range: 4.3-7.1), and pr …

Genetic, metabolic and endocrine aspect of intrauterine growth restriction: an update.

Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) is defined as growth of fetus below its in-utero growth potential. Small for gestational age (SGA) is defined as newborn with birth weight less than 10th centile as per the gestational age, sex and race. There exists major difference between IUGR and SGA. IUGR infants have multiple short-term and long-term complications and IUGR is a silent cause of various morbidities and mortalities in these infants. IUGR/SGA is usually end results of maternal, placental, fetal and genetic causes. With the advance of molecular biology, the list genetic cause of IUGR is
