Alginate microparticles containing silver@hydroxyapatite functionalized calcium carbonate composites.

This paper focuses on the preparation and characterization of antibacterial alginate microparticles containing silver@hydroxyapatite functionalized calcium carbonate composites for tissue engineering. Microparticles were prepared by cross-linking a silver@composite sodium alginate dispersion with CaCl2. This method showed a very good silver efficiency loading and the presence of silver chloride nanoparticles was detected. Silver free microparticles, containing hydroxyapatite functionalized calcium carbonates and neat alginate microparticles were prepared as well. All microparticles were charac

Noninvasive Tracking of Alginate-Microencapsulated Cells.

This chapter presents a description of standardized techniques used routinely in our laboratory to encapsulate different cell types using the alginate-PLL-alginate immunoisolation system. Given the importance of noninvasive tracking of encapsulated cell transplants, we present a detailed guidance to achieve maximum efficiency and functionality of the capsule preparations for optimal tracking posttransplantation. The provided protocols cover tracking of encapsulated cells using magnetic resonance (MR), X-ray, computed tomography (CT), and ultrasound (US) imaging. Practical suggestions to optimi

Sodium alginate inhibits methotrexate-induced gastrointestinal mucositis in rats.

Gastrointestinal mucositis is one of the most prevalent side effects of chemotherapy. Methotrexate is a pro-oxidant compound that depletes dihydrofolate pools and is widely used in the treatment of leukemia and other malignancies. Through its effects on normal tissues with high rates of proliferation, methotrexate treatment leads to gastrointestinal mucositis. In rats, methotrexate-induced gastrointestinal mucositis is histologically characterized by crypt loss, callus fusion and atrophy, capillary dilatation, and infiltration of mixed inflammatory cells. The water-soluble dietary fiber sodium

Mapping global effects of the anti-sigma factor MucA in Pseudomonas fluorescens SBW25 through genome-scale metabolic modeling.

BACKGROUND: Alginate is an industrially important polysaccharide, currently produced commercially by harvesting of marine brown sea-weeds. The polymer is also synthesized as an exo-polysaccharide by bacteria belonging to the genera Pseudomonas and Azotobacter, and these organisms may represent an alternative alginate source in the future. The current work describes an attempt to rationally develop a biological system tuned for very high levels of alginate production, based on a fundamental understanding of the system through metabolic modeling supported by transcriptomics studies and carefully

A novel pulsed drug-delivery system: polyelectrolyte layer-by-layer coating of chitosan-alginate microgels.

PURPOSE: The aim of this report was to introduce a novel "core-membrane" microgel drug-delivery device for spontaneously pulsed release without any external trigger. METHODS: The microgel core was prepared with alginate and chitosan. The semipermeable membrane outside the microgel was made of polyelectrolytes including polycation poly(allylamine hydrochloride) and sodium polystyrene sulfonate. The drug release of this novel system was governed by the swelling pressure of the core and the rupture of the outer membrane. RESULTS: The size of the core-membrane microgel drug-delivery device was 4

An in situ gelling buccal spray containing platelet lysate for the treatment of oral mucositis.

Oral mucositis is an inflammatory disease of the mucosa lining oral cavity which leads to atrophy of the epithelium and to its ulceration to form chronic lesions. Many studies, both in vitro and in vivo, have disclosed the effectiveness of growth factors derived from platelets to enhance cell proliferation, differentiation, chemotaxis, angiogenesis and extracellular matrix synthesis involved in the healing of tissues. Despite potential usefulness of growth factors, animal-derived or genetically engineered ones are currently scarcely available for regenerative therapies. The aim of the present

Enhancement of perineurial repair and inhibition of nerve adhesion by viscous injectable pure alginate sol.

BACKGROUND: Clinical treatment of recurrent symptoms following peripheral nerve decompression is problematic. Removal of scar tissue can produce an inappropriately pronounced healing response and thereby lead to more serious tethering or compression of the nerve. The goal of the present study was to test the ability of viscous injectable pure alginate sol to prevent perineurial adhesion using a rat neurolysis model. METHODS: The antiadhesive effect of viscous injectable pure alginate sol after neurolysis was evaluated histologically and biomechanically. A total of 40 rats were used in this st

Multicomponent treatment for laryngopharyngeal reflux disease in patients over 65: age-related differences in patient-reported and endoscopic outcomes compared with younger adults.

BACKGROUND: Laryngopharyngeal reflux disease (LPRD) in older adults may present with greater endoscopic severity, impaired symptom perception, and increased comorbidity burden, making clinical assessment and treatment selection particularly challenging in this population. Although proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are commonly used, prolonged treatment in elderly patients raises safety concerns. Multicomponent medical devices, including alginate-based formulations, may offer a PPI-sparing alternative. METHODS: This prospective, single-center observational study enrolled 48 patients with clinicall

Spray-dried zinc-alginate microparticles for antibiotic removal from water: a promising approach to mitigate antibiotic resistance.

Antibiotic residues in gastrointestinal and environmental compartments promote the selection of resistant bacteria and the emergence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). This study evaluates spray drying as a scalable method to produce crosslinked zinc-alginate (Zn-Alg-SD) microparticles for antibiotic removal from water via metal complexation, using ciprofloxacin (CIPRO) and amoxicillin (AMOX) as model compounds. Zn-Alg-SD microparticles were prepared by spray drying at varying zinc (Zn2+) concentrations. Particle characteristics were assessed by FTIR, optical particle size analysis, SEM, and I

Biofunctional alginate hydrogel enabling Fe³⁺ detection and therapeutic modulation of hepatic fibrosis.

Hepatic fibrosis, driven by hepatic stellate cell (HSC) activation and excessive extracellular matrix (ECM) deposition, is closely associated with iron overload. To enable simultaneous diagnosis and treatment, a multifunctional hydrogel nanocomposite (SA-1@MG) was developed by modifying sodium alginate with a compound 1-based Fe³⁺-responsive fluorophore and loading mangiferin (MG). SA-1@MG exhibited strong, selective fluorescence quenching toward Fe³⁺ (R² = 0.9992) and high stability under physiological conditions. In vitro studies using TGF-β1-induced LX-2 cells confirmed that SA-1@MG effecti

Colon-targeted mucin/cyclosporine A co-loaded microspheres synergistically ameliorate ulcerative colitis via immunosuppression and mucosal barrier repair.

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the colon and rectum, associated with epithelial barrier defects and dysregulated immune responses. Here, we developed Eudragit S100-coated mucin/CyA co-loaded calcium alginate microspheres (E-CMAMs) for synergistic UC therapy via immunosuppression and mucosal barrier repair. E-CMAMs were prepared by a high-voltage electrostatic method and an emulsification-solvent evaporation method. Their characteristics were analyzed by inverted optical microscope, SEM, FTIR, and DSC. E-CMAMs exhibited excellent pH-responsive behavior, as they rem

Intestinal-targeted delivery of mixture of probiotics via MgO/chitosan/alginate nanoparticles for mitigating lead(II)-induced multi-organ toxicity.

Lead(II) (Pb(II)) is a widespread environmental contaminant known to induce oxidative stress, inflammation, and multi-organ damage in both humans and animals. Conventional remediation methods, such as free probiotic supplementation, are often compromised by gastric acid, which significantly reduces the probiotics' targeted delivery to the small intestine, where Pb(II) exerts much of its toxicity. Addressing this challenge, the present study introduces a novel approach: encapsulating a mixture of probiotics (Lactobacillus rhamnosus, Lactobacillus helveticus, and Lactobacillus casei) within magn

"Cocktail-style" probiotic co-delivery system a multi-component strategy to overcome gastrointestinal challenges.

Although current probiotics encapsulation strategies greatly improve survival in the gastrointestinal tract, they still face challenges adapting to its complex and dynamic physicochemical environment. Accordingly, this study draws on "cocktail therapy" to develop a multi-component protection oral delivery system. The core consists of carboxymethyl gellan gum (CMGG)/pectin (CP) microspheres loaded with Bifidobacterium (Bif), sequentially coated with pectin and sodium alginate (SA) using chitosan (CS) as an adhesive, followed by a mineralized calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) outer layer. In this system
