Despite longstanding interest in liquid crystalline compounds with simple rod- or disc-like shapes (calamitics or discotics), very few examples of the analogous board-shaped, or "sanidic", liquid crystals exist. A new series of alkyl-substituted dibenzo[fg,op]naphthacenes have been prepared by planarization of o-phenylene precursors through dehydrohalogenation. The alkyl cyclic ketone (ACK) fragrance ingredients are a diverse group of structures with similar metabolic and toxicity profiles. ACK fragrance materials demonstrate low acute toxicity. Upon repeat dose testing, some adverse effects in biochemical and hematological parameters, and slightly increased liver and kidney weights were reported, primarily at high doses, resulting from adaptive effects. A new, convenient and efficient transition metal-free synthesis of S-alkyl dithiocarbamates through one-pot reaction of N-tosylhydrazones, carbon disulfide and amines is reported. Tosylhydrazones derived from various aromatic and aliphatic ketones or aldehydes were tested and gave dithiocarbamates in good to excellent yields. The tosylhydrazones can be generated in situ without isolation, which provides a simpler one-pot method to synthesize dithiocarbamates via the reaction of carbonyl compounds, carbon disulfide and amines in the presence of 4-methylbenzenesulfonohydrazide.

In the search for better herbicides a series of 1-alkyl-3-(alpha-hydroxy-(un)substituted benzylidene)pyrrolidine-2,4-diones were prepared and their structure-activity relationships studied. All their structures have been confirmed by (1)H-NMR and elemental analysis. The preliminary bioassay results indicated that some of them have high herbicidal activity against annual dicotyledonous and monocotyledonous plants.

This communication describes a significant expansion in the scope of Stille reactions of Csp3-X electrophiles, specifically, that Pd/P(t-Bu)2Me catalyzes the room-temperature cross-coupling of a variety of functionalized, beta-hydrogen-containing alkyl bromides with an array of alkenyltin reagents. The structure of the phosphine (P(t-Bu)2Me) is well suited for facilitating oxidative addition and avoiding beta-hydride elimination, while the fluoride serves to activate the tin reagent for efficient transmetalation.
