BACKGROUND: Dextromethorphan (DM) is a cough suppressant that is widely available in many prescribed and over-the-counter medications. Both immediate and delayed hypersensitivity reactions have been reported following the ingestion of DM. Anaphylaxis to DM is rare, with only three reported cases in the literature. The measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine is generally well tolerated, and reports of anaphylaxis to the vaccine are rare. IgE-mediated reactions to vaccines are often caused by additives or residual vaccine components. An inability to obtain proper immunizations can be a disqualifying component to military service.
