Antibiotics governance in aquaculture: knowledge, practices, and challenges among stakeholders on the Volta Lake in Ghana.

INTRODUCTION: The use and misuse of antibiotics for treating animal and human infections are a key driver of the emergence of resistant bacterial strains at the human-animal-environment interface. This inappropriate use threatens ecological balance and poses a significant risk to human health. The lack of relevant knowledge of the right attitudes and practices regarding antimicrobial stewardship among fish farmers, antibiotic drug retailers, and government agencies has significantly exacerbated this serious environmental and public health issue. To enhance understanding and improve communicati

Antiprotozoal Drug Handling and Management Practices in Asella District, Central Oromia, Ethiopia.

RESULTS: The preliminary survey comprising 70 animal health professionals and animal owners was undertaken through observation, interview using a structured questionnaire, and discussion with key informants to evaluate their handling and management practices of antiprotozoal drugs. According to the finding of this preliminary survey, there was inadequate antiprotozoal drug distribution and only few drugs, namely, diminazene diaceturate, amprolium, and sulfa drugs, were available with different trade names being imported from different manufacturing countries. Among the current available antipr

Haemophilus influenzae persists in biofilm communities in a smoke-exposed ferret model of COPD.

RATIONALE: Non-typeable Haemophilus influenzae (NTHi) is a common inhabitant of the human nasopharynx and upper airways that can cause opportunistic infections of the airway mucosa including bronchopulmonary infections in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It is clear that opportunistic infections contribute significantly to inflammatory exacerbations of COPD; however, there remains much to be learned regarding specific host and microbial determinants of persistence and/or clearance in this context. METHODS: In this study, we used a recently described ferret model for

Detailed Anatomy of the Cranial Cervical Ganglion in the Dromedary Camel (Camelus dromedarius).

The detailed morphology and topography of the cranial cervical ganglion (CCG) with its surrounding structures were studied in 10 sides of five heads of adult one-humped camel to determine its general arrangement as well as its differences and similarities to other animals. The following detailed descriptions were obtained: (1) the bilateral CCG was constantly present caudal to cranial base at the rostroventral border of the occipital condyle over the caudolateral part of nasopharynx; (2) the CCG was always in close relations medially with the longus capitis muscle, rostrolaterally with the int

Two third-year medical student-level laboratory shock exercises without large animals.

BACKGROUND: Historically, medical schools have taught principles of hemodynamic shock using large animal models. Such exercises are infrequent today due to the increasing aversion of students and the wider community to the use of large animals in teaching. Herein, we describe two alternative exercises that communicated basic science and clinical principles of shock effectively. METHODS: We developed two complementary, distinct single-afternoon laboratory exercises for third-year medical students. The first exercise (lab) demonstrated three principles: (1) in vitro cytokine-induced apoptosis (

Pancreatic cancer and drinking water and dietary sources of nitrate and nitrite.

N-Nitroso compounds, known animal carcinogens, are formed endogenously from drinking water and dietary sources of nitrate and nitrite. The authors conducted a population-based case-control study of pancreatic cancer in Iowa to determine whether increased consumption of nitrate and nitrite from drinking water and dietary sources was associated with risk. They linked detailed water source histories to nitrate measurements for Iowa community water supplies. After exclusions for insufficient data, 1,244 controls and 189 pancreatic cancer cases were available for analysis. Among controls, the media

Correlating the oral swab microbial community with milk production metrics in Holstein dairy cows.

Oral swabs of dairy cows have been suggested as a proxy for direct ruminal sampling, and this approach can identify the presence of up to 70% of the rumen microbial community. Here, we further extend the utility of this approach by correlating the bacterial community of swabs collected from 226 dairy cows on a research farm in Wisconsin, USA, with average milk yield and days in milk, two phenotypes previously associated with differences in the ruminal microbiome. We then obtained milk production efficiency data for a subset of these animals (gross feed efficiency [GFE] and residual feed intake

An integrated study of human and animal infectious disease in the Lake Victoria crescent small-holder crop-livestock production system, Kenya.

BACKGROUND: The neglected zoonotic diseases (NZD) are an understudied group that are a major cause of illness throughout the developing world. In general, little is known about the prevalence and burden of NZDs in affected communities, particularly in relation to other infectious diseases with which they are often co-endemic. We describe the design and descriptive epidemiological outputs from an integrated study of human and animal zoonotic and non-zoonotic disease in a rural farming community in western Kenya. METHODS: This cross-sectional survey involved 2113 people, their cattle (n = 983)

Biofilm-forming antimicrobial-resistant pathogenic Escherichia coli: A one health challenge in Northeast India.

This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC), Enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC), and Enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC) in common food animals (cattle, goats, and pigs) reared by tribal communities and smallholder farmers in Northeast India. The isolates were characterized for the presence of virulence genes, extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBL) production, antimicrobial resistance, and biofilm production, and the results were statistically interpreted. In pathotyping 141 E. coli isolates, 10 (7.09%, 95% CI: 3.45%-12.66%) were identified as STEC

Dietary niche breadth influences the effects of urbanization on the gut microbiota of sympatric rodents.

Cities are among the most extreme forms of anthropogenic ecosystem modification, and urbanization processes exert profound effects on animal populations through multiple ecological pathways. Increased access to human-associated food items may alter species' foraging behavior and diet, in turn modifying the normal microbial community of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT), ultimately impacting their health. It is crucial we understand the role of dietary niche breadth and the resulting shift in the gut microbiota as urban animals navigate novel dietary resources. We combined stable isotope analysi

Comparative Analyses of Antibiotic Resistance Genes in Jejunum Microbiota of Pigs in Different Areas.

Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are emerging environmental contaminants that threaten human and animal health. Intestinal microbiota may be an important ARGs repository, and intensive animal farming is a likely contributor to the environmental burden of ARGs. Using metagenomic sequencing, we investigated the structure, function, and drug resistance of the jejunal microbial community in Landrace (LA, Kunming), Saba (SB, Kunming), Dahe (DH, Qujing), and Diannan small-ear piglets (DS, Xishuangbanna) from different areas in Yunnan Province, China. Remarkable differences in jejunal microbial div

Role of the trigeminal system on posterior communicating artery remodelization after bilateral common carotid artery ligation.

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether or not there is a possible relationship between the neuron density of trigeminal ganglion (TGG) and the severity of posterior communicating artery (PComA) vasodilation values after permanent bilateral common carotid artery ligation (BCCAL). STUDY DESIGN: This study included 25 rabbits. Both the common carotid arteries of 20 rabbits were explored and denervated. Five animals served as controls. Permanent BCCAL was applied in 15 of the 20 rabbits, and the other 5 were used as the SHAM group without ligation. All animals were followed for 2 months and then sacrifice

Intercellular communication after myocardial infarction: Macrophage as the centerpiece.

Post-myocardial infarction (MI) injury, repair, and remodeling are complex biological events orchestrated by the heart and immune cell populations, with immune-inflammation at the core. Macrophages, as the main immune cell population active throughout the post-MI injury to repair processes, are the core of this "drama". Recently, single-cell sequencing and other techniques have revealed the heterogeneity of macrophage origins and the complexity of macrophage subpopulation transformation and intercellular communication after MI. Defining the changes in macrophage subpopulation dynamics and macr

Better Communication With the Public: Understanding Science Phobia and Mistrust as Neurobiological Phenomena.

Much has been written recently about science mistrust and illiteracy and consequent phobia of recommendations and interventions that have grown out of that science. Both reinforcing and reversing these phenomena depend on strategies aimed at brain networks that generate them. The neurogenesis of specific phobias involves a network that includes the amygdala and the hypothalamus and their connection through the stria terminalis. Decreased GABAergic inhibition of this circuit results in limbic activation and induction of fear pathways. The neurogenesis of mistrust involves suppression of a netwo

Modeling and analysis of hybrid-blood nanofluid flow in stenotic artery.

Current communication deals with the flow impact of blood inside cosine shape stenotic artery. The under consideration blood flow is treated as Newtonian fluid and flow is assumed to be two dimensional. The governing equation are modelled and solved by adopting similarity transformation under the stenosis assumptions. The important quantities like Prandtl number, flow parameter, blood flow rate and skin friction are attained to analyze the blood flow phenomena in stenosis. The variations of different parameters have been shown graphically. It is of interest to note that velocity increases due

Beyond sex, gender, and other dilemmas: Human pelvic morphology from an integrative context.

Recent research on the pelvis has clarified the flexibility of pelvic bones to manage nearly infinite possibilities in terms of selection and drift, while still maintaining excellent bipedalism. Despite this work, and the studies outlining the diversity of pelvic morphology across the hominin lineage, conversations continue to be stymied by distractions related to purported trade-offs that the different functions the pelvis must either allow for (e.g., parturition) or directly perform (e.g., attachment sites of muscles). Here we show that tight constraints on morphology are not evident in the

Viral determinants influencing intra- and intercellular communication in cytomegalovirus infection.

Cytomegaloviruses (CMVs) are typically disseminated by cell-to-cell transfer, which requires reprogramming of cellular signaling pathways and restructuring of the cell architecture. Viral particles not only transfer genetic information between cells, but also tegument proteins that enable the virus to counteract cellular defense mechanisms immediately upon entering cells. The UL25 gene family of CMVs encodes such tegument proteins and also gives rise to related nonstructural proteins expressed early in infection. Herein, we report on the functions attributed to UL25 family members of several β
