We undertook a prospective study to determine the type and distribution of foot and ankle snowboarding injuries. Reports of 3213 snowboarding injuries were collected from 12 Colorado ski resorts between 1988 and 1995. Of these, 491 (15.3%) were ankle injuries and 58 (1.8%) were foot injuries. Ankle injuries included 216 (44%) fractures and 255 (52%) sprains. Thirty-three (57%) of the foot injuries were fractures and 16 (28%) were sprains. The remaining injuries were soft tissue injuries, contusions, or abrasions. There was no significant correlation between boot type (soft, hybrid, or hard) an…

This study investigated the relationship between exposure time and ankle sprains in soccer. Forty-one teams (639 players) from four male senior soccer divisions at different levels of skill (divisions I-VI) were followed prospectively for 1 year. The exposure to soccer and the number of injuries per player were higher in higher divisions, but the injury incidence, percentage of ankle injuries and incidence of ankle injuries were the same at different levels of skill. Of all injuries 17 to 20% were ankle sprains and the incidence varied between 1.7 to 2.0 ankle injuries per 1,000 hours of expos…

Ankle sprain occurs by a sudden and extreme inversion and plantarflexion at the ankle joint to cause ligamentous injuries. A portion of ankle sprain patients experience recurrent ankle sprains and develop chronic ankle instability (CAI). The present CAI animal models are single events with severe ligamentous injury using surgical transection of ligaments or manually overextending the ankle. Purpose: To simulate the mechanical and recurrent sprain injuries in CAI patients, we established a new ankle instability model with multiple ankle injuries using a self-designed machine to sprain the ankle…

Ankle stability is integral to normal motion and to minimizing the risk of ankle sprain during participation in sport activities. The ability of the dynamic and static stabilizers of the ankle joint to maintain their structural integrity is a major component of the normal gait cycle. In sports, this quality assumes even greater importance given the range of movement and stresses imposed on the ankle during various sporting disciplines. In the general population, the incidence of ankle sprain is very high. In several studies, injuries to the lateral ankle ligaments have been shown to be the mos

The orthopaedic nurse will undoubtedly care for patients with ankle injuries. Ankle sprains and fractures are common injuries seen in orthopaedic practices in the United States. To provide comprehensive nursing care of these injuries, nurses should understand ankle biomechanics as well as anatomy. Knowledge of fracture classification schemes, pathology of injury, and treatment modalities is also important. Fracture classification schemes vary as do treatment modalities. Ankle sprains and fractures can be treated operatively or nonoperatively, and orthopaedic nurses play an important role in th…

In this study, an assessor-blinded randomized trial with concealed allocation was conducted. Thirty women aged 25-35 years with chronic ankle instability (CAIT score ≤ 24 on the affected ankle) were randomly assigned (1:1) to perceptual balance (PB) training with floss bands (FB group, n = 15) or PB training alone (n = 15). Both groups completed a 6-week program (3 sessions/week), progressing from static to dynamic and plyometric tasks. FBs were applied at perceived occlusion pressure of 5-7/10 (0-10 scale); no adverse events occurred. Outcomes (assessed on the affected limb only) included sta

OBJECTIVES: The relationship between knee kinematics and knee-ankle kinetics during the landing phase of single leg jumping has been widely studied to identify proper strategies for preventing non-contact ACL injury. However, there is a lack of study on knee-ankle kinetics at peak knee flexion angle during jumping from running. Hence, the purpose of this study is to establish the relationship between peak knee flexion angle, knee extension moment, ankle plantar flexion moment and ground reaction force in handball players in order to protect ACL from excessive stress during single leg jumping.

Ankle sprain injuries are the most common type of joint sprain. The prevalence of ankle joint sprains accounts for 21% of joint injuries in the body. Although somewhat rare, high-ankle or syndesmotic ankle sprains occur in up to 15% of ankle trauma. This article will present the pathomechanics of the high-ankle or syndesmotic sprain.

Acute ankle sprains are common sports injuries. MRI is the most accurate test for assessing the integrity and severity of ligament injuries in acute ankle sprains. However, MRI may not detect syndesmotic and hindfoot instability, and many ankle sprains are treated conservatively, questioning the value of MRI. In our practice, MRI adds value in confirming the absence or presence of ankle sprain-associated hindfoot and midfoot injuries, especially when clinical examinations are challenging, radiographs are inconclusive, and subtle instability is suspected. This article reviews and illustrates th

Osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) of the foot and ankle is an uncommon condition in children, often associated with ankle inversion injuries. Its symptoms can mimic common ankle injuries, making it challenging to diagnose and potentially leading to delay in care. Therefore, it is crucial to further evaluate patients with persistent ankle pain despite negative radiographic imaging and no relief with standard treatment of ankle injuries. This case highlights the presentation, delayed diagnosis, and treatment of an 11-year-old male soccer player who experienced persistent left ankle and foot pain o…

BACKGROUND: Ankle sprains are among the most common injuries experienced by collegiate athletes. The type of ankle sprain is rarely differentiated in epidemiological studies. This differentiation is necessary, as each ankle sprain type has a unique injury mechanism and recovery period. High ankle sprains commonly result in long recovery periods. Thus, a further examination of the epidemiology of high ankle sprains is warranted.
PURPOSE: To describe the epidemiology of high ankle sprains in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) sports during the 2009/2010-2014/2015 academic years.

Diagnostics and Therapy of Ankle Instability Abstract. Ankle sprains are among the most common musculoskeletal injuries and therefore often treated in the emergency department or in the general practitioner's office. In the majority of cases, the lateral ligamentous complex is affected. If treated correctly, ligamentous ankle injuries have a good prognosis and in about 80% of cases full recovery can be achieved. Risk factors for the development of chronic ankle instability are an inappropriate treatment of the ankle sprain, injury of the deltoid ligament, hyperlaxity and rearfoot deformities (…

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate trends, costs, and predictors of high-cost ankle sprain claims in the workers' compensation system.
METHODS: Among 26,773 ankle injury claims (2016-2024), 18,991 sprains were identified and analyzed using descriptive and analytical multivariate methods.
RESULTS: Sprains comprised about 70% of all ankle injuries, with increasing proportions among medical-only claims during the 9 years. Litigation, some comorbidities (diabetes and thyroid conditions), and coexisting injuries were strongly associated with high-cost claims (≥$50,000). Sprains without coexisting injuries r…
